It was on this week in 1994 that Kurt Cobain took his life.

I am a musician myself and Kurt is one of two people who have truly inspired me to write music. He made such an impact on my life and the lives of millions of people worldwide.

R.I.P Kurt

 

 

P.S can we please not turn this into a Kurt Cobain bashing thread like we usually get when anyone mentions his name.

I don't think that does happen. A lot of people around here respect him a lot.

 

I like a few Nirvana songs, not a great fan but I know they've influenced quite a few bands that I really like - Radiohead etc. So I guess in an indirect way they have influenced me and for that I have a lot of respect for what he did.

VH2, Scuzz and Kerrang have a lot of Nirvana songs on play this week, and a lot of shows to commemorate. So I'll have something to watch all week :)

Im a big fan of Nirvana. Nevermind is one of my favourite albums (I always preferred their more commercial songs. I'm sorry) and he clearly did have some influence on several bands today. He had a great sense of melody and you really got the feeling that he meant every word he said, well, except the lyric 'I don't have a gun'.

 

It is a shame that so many need to jump on the bandwagon. For instance, they had lots of 18 and 19 year olds on the TV talking about how they remember him. I'm not sure how his suicide could've had that much effect on them. Also, I think the word genius is overused, certainly with him. Can he really be compared to Lennon and McCartney? To be bracketed into the word genius with these men is a bit strong especially when you consider how much more important the Beatles were than Nirvana.

 

Of course, none of this is Kurts fault. I don't want to turn this into a Cobain bashing thread as someone said earlier. Basically, Kurt Cobain was a massively talented musician/songwriter and a tragic waste as well as a great anti drug advert.

First, I'm 19 this week, and Kurt's suicide had an enormous effect on me. I was a huge Nirvana fan from the time I was very little (Well, my dad was, and it passed on to me.) and at the time, it seemed like the end of the world. Also, how is the word 'genius' overused on him. I mean, lets look at this in perspective; he wrote three of the greatest songs of all time, (Teen Spirit, Come As You Are and Polly) he single handedly revived the punk scene, and created grunge. He gave the world Dave Grohl, rock god. He's also responsible for every act on the music scene today, from Britney to 50 Cent, from Radiohead to Okenfold. He forced the major record companies to diversify their acts. If they'd only had pop stars on their labels, the revived punk scene would've killed them. Same with dance, rap and RnB. And like you said, he was a huge influence on a lot of the rock bands today. (not just Radiohead)

I just find it hard to believe that a 9 year old could really see the death of a rock star as the end of the world. You were nine! Weren't you playing with toys and watching CBBC? Of course if you were really deeply upset by his death then I take it back.

 

As for the genius thing, I just think the word genius is overused. He was influencial certainly, and yes he wrote a few great songs but was he a genius? As I said earlier it just seems strange to have to bracket him with Lennon/McCartney who had so much more of an impact than Cobain ever did.

I was deeply upset when I heard of Kurt's death, not least because I had a ticket to go and see Nirvana a couple of weeks after! I was 14, and as I recall I cried for three days.

It is sad that he got so messed up and felt that suicide was the only way out, leaving a junkie wife and a baby girl behind.

Did he actually create grunge? There were quite a few "grunge" groups out at the same time as he was getting big, such as Soundgarden. If he did, all apologies.

 

And for the record, I think Alice In Chains were a better band :)

I don't think he's a genius, why is he a genius for writing good songs? Has he been proved to have the IQ of a genius? Probably not, we all just like him so much we think we need to kiss his ass (sorry about that one). He definitely did NOT create grunge, he just made it the most popular genre of that time, that's quite easy to see. I loved Nirvana and thought Kurt Cobain wrote absolutely amazing songs, some of my all-time favourites, but I can't help but think a shitload of teenagers just got obsessed with the whole depression thing and saw him as the easiest figure to relate to, hence his huge popularity. He sure as hell wasn't a virtuoso on guitar, and his voice wasn't that strong, but people just liked it a lot. I think if he couldn't handle the strain of his popularity and success, and living was too hard, it was a good idea to kill himself (that's if he did), although having said that, I'd love to hear what Nirvana would sound like to this day!

Nirvana and Cobain influenced me earlier in life. But in the last year I have started to move away from that influence. The beattles were just as good as Nirvana IMO they appel to different types of fans, so I don't think that you could put them in the same league together.

I think that alot of the stuff that Kurt said in his life was just total bull. He was known to just make up stories to make things a little more intresting. So I wouldn't really believe the whole 'I don't want to be famous, Just wanna write music' crap. He hired and fired at least 3 drummers before finding the right one to bring his commercal music over. I just guess he didn't know how much effect his words would have on everyone.

 

And as for Kurt "Giving" us Dave Grohl, man thats the funniest thing I've ever read. -lol-

I think Dave is and was talented enough back then to make it on his own :) But I will agree that Kurt influenced alot of his songs and the way that he wrote them :)

All things considered, if I hadn't got into Nirvana then I probably wouldn't be listening to the kind of music I do, hanging out with the people I do or even be the same person as I am now. I do class hearing the music of Nirvana as being a main turning point in my life, and for that much I am thankful.

He was a talented guy, ultimately overrated and his death did make him a much bigger star than living ever would have, but well give the devil his due he influenced a hoard of musicians, and made some good music.

Just curious.. as i was only really young when he died.. but in their day, not now, but in their day how big were Nirvana? I mean, could they top the bills at all the big festivals? Do sell out arena tours etc?

The gig I was going to go to was at a very large venue, Cardiff Ice Rink, so I assume that they were big enough to do huge tours. I don't recall if they did any festivals over here - it was so long ago now and I've seen a lot of bands since then. :music

Nirvana had a few good songs...My favourite being Lithium and the awesome cover of "The Man Who Sold The World" by David Bowie which they did for the Unplugged set, Everytime I hear that version I think wow...

 

Personally I always preffered Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains over Nirvana, But that's just me, There is no doubting Cobains/Nirvana's impact on the music scene. I wouldn't paticularly say he was a genius, I just think he took a concept/genre which was ready to explode (Grunge) and took into the mainstream.

I don't recall if they did any festivals over here - it was so long ago now and I've seen a lot of bands since then. :music

 

 

I know that they did a festival shortly before Kurts death (think it was Reading) Kurt played the gig in a hospital gown after media reports that he wouldnt be at the gig because he was in hospital. It was voted in Kerrang as the official number 1 gig of all time.

They were bigger than Jesus.

 

Anyway I think that Nirvana are possibly the most influental band in history, up there with The Beatles and Elvis. The fact to even today, Nirvana albums are still being sold shows that their songs can withstand time. Kurt influenced so many in such a short time that it really is scary.

Do you honestly believe that? I think he might be dead you know, there's pictures of him lying on a floor, dead, with a bullet wound in his head...
