The trailer looks very interesting and i'm very anxious about the game. It does seem to be going in a very different direction to the previous games. With the slogan "Nowhere to hide" this time round, with things more based on action than stealth. I'm unsure as to whether that's the right direction in which to take the MGS franchise.

DAMN! just beat me to it! :D

There's 2 things that make it seem futuristic:

MGS3 Spoiler:

The patch, which he gets at the end of MGS3, but it's different

It looks totally different and he looks older... the mustache and things.

And wrinkles around his eyes, but hey, that's probably just PS3 detail!

And this is only the first video, and it's interesting!

I can not wait to play MGS4 after watching that!

Won't it be like another 2 or 3 years until we play it? :(

EDIT: Wow... if Japan is THIS release (like OMG): US: TBA 2007

Japan: December 31, 2007 which is one day before 2008, then it's about August 2008 before we can play this!! WOW!! :eek

And this is the ORIGINAL boxart (it even says so in the link, and it's off IGN, so yeah.)

But UK's could be different, who knows...

And it's good to see them using MGS4 on the boxart instead of Metal Gear Solid 4 (but hey, where's the Guns of the Patriots in the title on the boxart?) because it shows that MGS games are SO,SO (like they weren't already...) popular now that EVERYBODY know what MGS means... :D

The video says that it's 10 years since the last game, and refers to him as an "old man".

As for the resolution, unless the PS3 can only produce 400 pixels wide, then it's nothing to go on, as the resolution in the video is so small.

Also, this is all pre-rendered, so the in-game graphics could be nothing like this.

You mean it's 10 years in the future from MGS3? so if you imagine we are living in MGS3 time, it would be 10 years in front? so it's Snake's dad again but old? and he reminds me of Ocelot
Its Solid Snake, its ten years on from MGS2.

Isn't MGS3 all virtual though, so none of it really happens?

I thought that they must have gone back to Solid Snake when I saw they went to an old guy as Big Boss' fate is covered in the old Metal Gear 16 bit games

I think you're confused with mgs1, there, or 2. I dunno. 3 was 'real'.

The last time mgs had an aciton bent it was Solid Snake on the nes, and it was duff. But that was just an american developed offshoot, so I dunno. Didn't mgs3 have the same tagline?

Wait wait, what's this you're talking about?

One of them never really "happened" (if you see games as real life if you get me)?

Oh wait, wasn't it...

!!!*****MGS2 Spoiler*****!!!

about the Patriots (I think) about dead 100 years ago at the end of MGS2:SoL?

You didn't pay much attention in MGS3 did you? It did happen, it's just the patriots.... ahh i'm too hungover to explaun this. I'll doo it some other time.

I'm sure Mister Kojima has plenty of twists and turns for us all, i would'nt worry about it.

I'd just wait with baited breath till it comes out.

I was going to try to write up an explanation myself but its just way too much info to go through, and its all so complex it'll get confusing, plus the obvious spoilers. So to make easier the games follow in this corresponding order:

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (1960-1972) - PS2

Metal Gear (1995) - MSX2/NES

Snake's Revenge* - NES

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1999) - MSX2

Metal Gear Solid (2010) - PS1

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2012) - PS2

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (X years after MGS2) - PS3

*Snakes Revenge was made by Konami, but Kojima-san had no involvement so is deemed as not part of the series and not a true Metal Gear, so essentially is a spin off along the lines of the Acid titles, VR Missions, Metal Gear Babel etc.

Hope that clears it all up, theres plenty of sites that explain the specific story around. Just Google/Yahoo.

So there's a 50 year difference between MGS3 and MGS2 - does MGS3 not star Solid Snake or something? (I've never played it).

If it is Solid, then he'd have to be 70-80 by the time of MGS2, and 80-90 by MGS4.

How on Earth did he manage to do all of that being a geriatric?

The person you play in Metal gear Solid 3 is the father of the person you play in Metal Gear Solid 1 you also play him in the first section of Metal Gear Solid 2

In the latter part of Metal Gear Solid 2 you play Raiden who's a puff.

God knows who you play in Metal Gear Solid 4, probably his godson or somebody.

In Metal Gear Solid 3 you play Big Boss who is Solid Snakes father whom Solid Snake, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake are cloned from. Metal Gear 4 you play Solid Snake.

Its all to explain the background of The Patriots, whose exsistance are discovered during MGS2. MGS3 looks into the past and how they came about etc (trying not to spoil the storylines) as well as acting as a backstory of Big Boss whom became Solid Snakes foe in Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2. Then MGS4 follows as it is the continuation of Solid Snakes search for the Patriots which begins at the end of MGS2. Thats it in the simpliest terms.
