Warner Bros has reportedly optioned a script for a live action version of the 1980s television animated series, Thundercats.

Paul Sopocy has written the script, with Paula Weinstein producing through Spring Creek Productions, along with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.

The original series, based on characters created by Ted Wolf, followed a group of humanoid cats with names like Lion-O and Cheetara, who must flee their planet of Thundera after it was destroyed. Landing on Third Earth, they constantly battle against the evil Mumm-Ra.

It originally aired from 1985 to 1990 in the US, and was frequently repeated. Comic book versions were also produced by Marvel Comics, with an 'adult' version created by DC Comics' Wildstorm in 2003. Warner Bros has owned the rights to the animated series since acquiring Telepictures Corporation in 1989.

In a word oh Hell Yeah!!!!!

The important question... who plays Tigra? :D

I have Samuel L Jackson pegged as Panthro already. Will Ferrell as Snarf.

They could get Slipknot to do it as a nod to Aerosmith reworking the Spider-Man theme.

Warner purrs for Thundercats

'80s animated series heading to bigscreen

It's Thundercats, ho! at Warner Bros.

Studio has optioned a script by tyro scribe Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a CGI-animated feature.

Warner-based Paula Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Prods. banner, along with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.

Property revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.

Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.

Project was brought to Warner by Palek Patel, VP at Spring Creek. Dan Lin is overseeing the pic for Warners.

The Thundercats franchise began in 1983 and spawned several animated series, with the most recent airing on Cartoon Network, a toy line produced by LJN and comicbooks published by Marvel and DC imprints. Warner Bros. has owned the rights to the animated series since acquiring Telepictures Corp. in 1989.

Studio's recently been bitten by the nostalgia bug, pacting with Joel Silver to produce a live-action "He-Man" movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comicbook "Teen Titans," a junior Justice League.

Weinstein most recently produced Warners' "Blood Diamond," and with HBO Films is prepping "Recount," based on the 2000 presidential election, with Sydney Pollack set to direct.

"Thundercats" is Sopocy's first studio script sale as a screenwriter. He's currently senior writer, print advertising, at Fox Broadcasting Co., and has previously penned short films including "Staring at the Sun," which was screened at the Sundance film fest in 2005.

Esquire was given the first behind-the-scenes look at Thundercats: The Movie -- meeting the cast, taking some hasty portraits of them in their new makeup, and wrapping our hands around an early prototype of director Jon Favreau's favorite new toy, the Sword of Omens.

"After Iron Man, I was wiped, but when they brought up the Thundercats, I was so in," said Favreau, who jumped right into making the film after Warner Bros. purchased the script last week. "I mean, the Sword of Omens? Lion-O holding it to his crotch and screaming progressively louder until it gets full extension -- there's not a better meat-spanking joke out there."

The one thing Favreau did take seriously, however, was the casting. On day two of filming, Favreau said that like his choice of Robert Downey for the Tony Stark role in Iron Man, he'd been considering lead actor Hugh Jackman for the project since he heard about it on June 5. However, Jackman says it was almost a short-lived proposition.

"When I asked them if I could just keep my hair from X-Men for the role, John was the one who had to pull me aside and give me the bad news," Jackman said. "He said 'Hugh, your head's going to look like the steeple of a Russian Orthodox church for a few months.' I nearly died."

Jackman was far from the only one with wardrobe problems. For the role of Cheetara, co-star Jessica Simpson was covered in head-to-toe cheetah spots that, at times, didn't provide much camouflage.

"I honestly think I'm wearing less makeup for this role than I did on those Proactiv commercials," Simpson laughed. "Becca [Rebecca Romijn Stamos] told me that no matter how much they put on me, some geek with a DVR would take a screen grab of the half second where my nipple shows anyway. So I just told the powder boys 'go easy, fellas.'"

Perhaps a little skin isn't such a bad thing when your target demo is in its late 20s and early 30s and has fueled box office receipts for such '80s nostalgia trips as this year's TMNT and the upcoming Transformers movie. Nobody knows this better than Seth Green, who has made a career rehashing '80s pop culture for Robot Chicken and Family Guy. Though nostalgia drew him to the part, he said hundreds of hours of preadolescent cartoon watching hadn't prepared him for the challenge of voicing Thundercat setup man Snarf.

"I thought I would be able to just go into the Robot Chicken sound booth, say 'Snarf, Snarf, Snarf' in the Chris Griffin voice for 20 minutes, and leave, but that wasn't the case," Green said. "Much like Greg the Bunny, Snarf's a much more complex character than he appears on the surface. You have to remember that he's with Lion-O all the time, so he's feeling and experiencing everything Lion-O is. He may be the greatest sidekick in modern fiction."

Green isn't the only actor delighted to get a part in the big-budget blockbuster -- Michael Clarke-Duncan, who will be playing Panthro, calls his latest role "the chance of a lifetime."

"I was kind of hurt when I heard that (Ice) Cube got the part of Roadblock in the G.I. Joe project, but when Panthro came up, I jumped on it," Clarke-Duncan said. "I mean, he's a giant blue panther. And I look exactly like him."

Children's advocates say Thundercats, like TMNT, Transformers, and the upcoming Care Bears movie, displays a lack of imagination that is harming the next generation of cartoon watchers. A group headed by Genndy Tarkovsky, the mind behind the Cartoon Network's Powerpuff Girls and Dexter's Laboratory, protested outside the studio gate, calling for more quality entertainment choices for kids.

"These people forget that there were adults making all of these great characters for them when they were growing up," Tarkovsky said. "Now that they're older, they just keep making mindless cartoons like Aqua Teen Hunger Force for themselves and running Saved by the Bell on cartoon channels. I don't know why, but for some reason this generation just can't let it go."

There is totally no truth to the set report stuff, everything reported elsewhere only lists a CGI movie. There is no live action version.

Thundercats gets a director credit:http://www.cinecon.com

Jerry O'Flaherty, who has served as an art director on hit video games such as "Gears of Wars" and "Command and Conquer," will direct "Thundercats" for Warner Bros., reports Variety.

"Thundercats" is expected to be a CG-animated feature. Paul Sopocy will co-write the script with O'Flaherty. The film is based on the '80s animated series and will feature heroes and villains from thet story. "Thundercats" told of a group of human-like cats who flee the planet of Thundera and crash on another planet, Third Earth. There, they must battle Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer hoping to eliminate the race.

O'Flaherty tells the trade that he will remain faithful to the franchise which spawned the animated series, toys and comic books.

Depending on the performance of Transformers (which has no chance of tanking), you'll see a glut of 80s toons being brought back.

MASK is the next one that the Transformers team have been looking at.

Man a MASK movie would rule!
