Why won't anybody employ me?

I got rejected from the supermarkets :( Thats really bad aint it?

I know its not bad to be signing on because I actually need the money, I just feel ashamed that nobody wants to employ me.

Far from it, supermarkets can nowadays be VERY picky as they have a high turnover of staff-a lot of the people employed there are in between jobs so don't stay long, so it's quite possible that they see your qualifications and unfortunately lump you in that category. Have you thought about maybe being really forward and just going into shops, introducing yourself and say you're looking for a part time job. Explain why you only want a part time job. And in regards to your mates-if they're being like that then sod them. You're not their mate because of the place you're in, in your life. If they judge you on something so small, then shove something large and pointy where the sun doesn't shine. I suggest a bargepole.

Nicole are you off to uni in the autumn? It might be something that is putting employers off, there are times they just want people with no qualifications and no aspirations as they know these people won't leave.

Makes sense at all?

My mates are all threatening to disown me because I've got to go on the dole(
Then tell them to go f*ck themselves! Easier said than done, but really, what type of people say that to a legit mate and mean it, unless they are just kidding.

Nicole, never downplay your grades on your forms, ever. You worked hard to get the grades and qualifications you got, be proud of it, not many people wont hire these days due to overqualification.

Why dont you try and get part time or weekend work in Woolworths or WHSmiths, I know in Plymouth those two shops are ALWAYS looking for people and they would take you on right away. How about trying local little shops around where you live, maybe there is a video/DVD rental shop, an off-licence, Co-Op or even a petrol station looking for people.

This may be a stupid question, but have you gone down the Job Centre? Look on their little computer things and print out as many as you can and call around.

Dont give up and dont let friends put you under pressure. Work will come and like it does for everybody it will likely come in a slew. I didnt get work for months, then everybody wanted to hire we. Its the way it goes seemingly.

I'm not sure what your transport situation is but I wouldn't be so quick to discount the agencies - or all of them anyway. I'm from your neck of the woods (Worcester) and Premier People were fantastic. They're just down the road from foregate street station towards Mcdonalds.

I signed up with them on numerous occasions during breaks and when I finished Uni and they always found me something quickly and something I enjoyed doing too.

The reason I've got my job now is down to them. They got me an admin temp job at the council, which became permanent and developed into the finance role I have now.

I really would give them a go! I'd been fobbed off by agencies before but Premiere found both me and my mates a lot of work and in most of the cases it developed into full time posts.

Anyway I'll stop my advertising now! :greets4:

I'm not touching agencies with a barge pole. Everybody I know who has dealt with them has found them absolutely useless. Just applied to two betting office jobs online, which makes it about 10 jobs I've applied for in 2 weeks.

Now thats part of the problem mate, 10 jobs applied for in 2 weeks is a seriously low ammount. Unless thats all there is in the area (which I highly doubt, after all an hours travel on public transport must bring up so much to go for).

Apply for everything and anything, even if you dont want the job. I will keep my fingers crossed for you......though McDonalds is almost always taking on. And its not as bad as you would think. :)

You work for Premiere don't you? :lol

In regards to these agencies people like or don't like, it obviously depends where you are, because there'll be different people working in different agencies. I guess you just have to hope you're lucky and have some good people in the one near you.

I applied for a job at Brantano and got a callback for an interview almost immediately. Not sure if im going for it though, I dunno. Half thinking about having no job over summer, relaxing and recharging my batteries for College.

Don't give up Nic!

To find the time to apply for 10 jobs in two weeks is pretty good, seeing as I've just sat 21 exams :)

How do I get it across that I'd want to carry it on through Uni though? I need a job to get me enough money to get through uni, I'm getting substantial grants but its not gonna be enough to keep me in food, clothes etc for the whole time there. I feel like I want to better myself, yet theres so many obstacles in my way money wise, that there seems absolutely no point in doing so.

I'd definately apply for McDonalds/ Pizza Hut, they'll take anyone on. Plus the jobs quite easy and you get really cheap meals.

I personally wouldn't bother with super markets. They're hard to get a job at unless you have family there. Well, in Doncaster anyway. Asda and Sainsbury's are bugger's for not getting in touch to say whether you have an interview. I went for an interview with Asda, and still haven't heard back from them about it, been about 3-4 years now:eek

Ireland is near impossible to get a job now.

Besides a bookies I seriously can't think of any other work place that does not employ foreign nationals.

I know you must be a pissed off Nicole especially after doing the exams but don't worry you will get a job when you least expect it.

As has been said, if you're friends are serious, then they are vile people who don't deserve your friendship. They're obviously not your friends if they feel like that.

I just feel ashamed that nobody wants to employ me.
Just remember that they don't actually know you, but what they are glancing at for about five seconds. As much as I don't want to agree with Burakio, he has a point. An eye-catching CV is a must these days, even for the "lowest" of positions.

As for agencies, don't dismiss them out of hand. I've had three jobs through an agency, and none of them lasted less than one year.

Officially finished, thank god.
And now that you're finished, and have some time on your hands, you should increase your applications from ten in two weeks to, at the very least, ten in two days.

Don't give up, apply for everything even remotely viable and don't be afraid to take a "lesser" job to begin with. There is nothing to say you can't take one job and then keep looking for another.

How do I get my hands on more than 10 application forms? I've been all around droitwich, collecting forms for anywhere advertising and thats literally all I've got. Droitwich really is a small town. There just seems to be a total lack of work at the moment.

Oh and I know people are trying to be helpful in suggesting McDonalds or Pizza Hut, but after working in a smelly hot kitchen for 3 years, I'm not doing it again, despite the fact I'm desperate. Working with food is absolutely awful, hence why I'm going for this waitressing interview on monday.

That may be your problem right there. I've never filled in an application form for any job I've had. It's always been a phone call, set up an interview and then get a job.

Don't stop with the forms, but start calling places as well, as that will be (in my opinion anyway) more productive.

What sort of jobs have you gone for though? With the work I'm trying to do, which is mainly shop work or bar work, everything seems to be done via application form.

Print out a few CV's for the places that don't have application form's. I don't know what it's like now, but about a year ago noone had application forms, you had to take in a CV instead.

Nicole do you want the super duper CV template?

Also, McDonald's & Pizza Hut = cheap meals?!?!??!?!??? Plates of coronary perhaps.

Chin up Nicole, maybe retail isn't the best route, try an agency and maybe get yourself into an office, estate agent or bank perhaps. Plenty of things to try. If not, most of TWO North works at BT in Doncaster :P

GOD ABOVE!!!!!!!!!! Dont work in a call center unless you have 100% control of your temper and dont mind getting abuse down the phone. I dealt with one call while a manager listened in, I thought I dealt with it quite well, but afterwards I said I get worried and nervous with people sat listening to me....she said she could tell as she wouldnt expect anyone to be like that normally with a customer.......I normally give the rat ******* ones as much grief as they give me. :(

Pizza hut, at least working on the front, is great. Really is.

I've just written a CV, based on one that the lovely Inno ;) gave me. Somebody could check it for me if they wanted to be super duper nice :) To be fair, if this shop business doesn't work out, maybe I should approach offices and stuff, I'm sure they'd find something I'm capable of doing.

I've done telesales. Possibly the MOST depressing thing ever.

Bar work is fairly easy to get employed for. Go into any pub you find and just ask them if they have work going. Hand in a CV and be persistant. If there are any bars and clubs around, start cleaning up glasses or something. I know plenty of people who did that at my local, and the bosses saw their commitment and eventually hired them full time to help out, plus they were then more willing to train them to do better jobs like pouring pints, etc, when usually they ask for experience if they're just hiring people from outside.

Don't be afraid to ask behind counters either. Not just "do you have any application forms?" but simply "do you have work going?". Again, be persistant. As DC said, phone calls are a good way to go.

I had some bar work at my local Walkabout towards the back end of last year. This on top of my full time job.

During the week it was great, i was being payed to serve the odd beer to a drunk whilst watching Football on a projector screen and eating peanuts. I also got free Orange juice and tonic water if i wished. At weekends it was slightly harder work but i enjoyed it more than having to go into work on a Saturday morning. Even though i was having to work about 6 times more at walkabout than i would of rant for a few hours on a Saturday morning at my main work. It also helped me pick up a few phone numbers.

Eventually i got fed up and did'nt really need the money so just decided to not turn in any more whilst in the same bar when Liverpool played Arsenal a few months ago the manager asked me for my Walkabout uniform back.

    • When the Carolina Panthers signed Andy Dalton earlier this offseason, they had their soon-to-be No. 1 overall pick in mind. Why not roster a 12-year veteran and three-time Pro Bowler to consult with your rookie quarterback? But what the Panthers might not have known is that Dalton also has some chops as a fashion consultant. Dalton, Bryce Young and Matt Corral looked a bit different—perhaps slimmer depending on who you ask—when they hit the practice field on Monday. Instead of donning the usual red practice jerseys, the trio began the latest installment of organized team activities in black—a change inspired by the 35-year-old passer. Corral was really loving the switch. Here were his thoughts, courtesy of Panthers.com’s Darin Gantt: Gantt also got a few words from the fashion icon himself: It’s not as powerful as “Keep Pounding,” but perhaps the Panthers can look good, feel good and play good into the 2023 campaign. • The NFC South returned to its 2014 form this past season. (For those who aren’t exactly acquainted with the “NFSW South,” yeah, it’s not good.) An 8-9 record, one mustered up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was good enough to take the division’s 2022 crown. Behind them were the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons—all of whom finished at 7-10. So, will this year be different? • Russell Okung may have never been called “fast” during his 11-year NFL career. But now, he’s embraced a different kind of fast in finding life after football. Almost two months ago—on Easter Sunday, to be exact—the former Carolina Panthers offensive lineman tweeted out a picture displaying the fruits of his dramatic body transformation. Once 330 pounds, a slender Okung looked precisely how the caption of the post read—”Reborn.” So, how did he do it? On Monday night, the 34-year-old answered that question: Okung added the following in a series of additional tweets: The 2010 sixth overall pick and two-time Pro Bowler played his final professional season with the Panthers in 2020. So, by our and Okung’s calculations, that was about three years and over 100 pounds ago. • The Dallas Cowboys started their week by bringing in seven players for a look—and among them was a former Carolina Panthers quarterback. Jacob Eason worked out for “America’s Team” on Monday. The 25-year-old passer was released by the Panthers back on May 18. Eason cracked into the pros as a fourth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. He appeared in his first NFL game in Week 2 of the 2021 campaign—when he completed two of his five passes for 25 yards and a pick against the Los Angeles Rams. After being waived by the Colts later that season, and then by the Seattle Seahawks in the summer of 2022, Eason landed in Carolina at the start of last season. In what would be his lone outing for the Panthers, the 6-foot-6, 231-pounder mopped up to finish off the Week 6 loss to the Rams (again)—where he threw for 59 yards and an interception. • Should the Carolina Panthers play it out with CJ Henderson in 2023 or pass him on to the next spot before the summer is over? Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks they should be of the latter thought, opining that a split with the 24-year-old cornerback may be best for both sides. Henderson was acquired by the Panthers in a 2021 swap with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who made the University of Florida product the ninth overall pick just a year earlier. Carolina parted ways with tight end Dan Arnold and a 2022 third-round pick for the defender and a 2022 fifth-rounder. Similarly to his brief time in Jacksonville, Henderson has not been able to stick on in Charlotte—having struggled over much of his 27-game stint for his new squad. His roughest outing, perhaps, came in what was essentially the NFC South title game this past season—when he was a prominent part of the coverage that allowed 207 yards and three touchdowns to Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Mike Evans. The Panthers declined Henderson’s fifth-year option back on May 1.
