This is a thread I decided to start after reading some comments made by the Chairman of The Olympics, Sebastian Coe, regarding steroid use. He said, "It could end up in a situation like WWE wrestling where everyone knows it is fake and they don't care about drugs." (Credit: WrestleZone.com)

 

To that, I say try and tell any wrestler that it's "fake" and see what happens. As a wrestling fan, I hate the word "fake" when it comes to pro-wrestling. I imagine others will agree with me. It's like Barry Blaustein said in the opening to one of my favorite movies, "Beyond The Mat"- "Sure, the winners are pre-determined and the moves are choreographed, but it's far from 'fake'". I personally hate that word because saying it's "fake" implies that no one gets hurt being a wrestler and that wrestling is all sunshine and lollipops. Sebastian Coe is what I call an "ignorant outsider". What gives him the right to insult wrestling and it's fans? I don't like the Olympics, but I don't target them and insult them.

 

I've said it several times, you can't call wrestling "fake" and not being a sport if NASCAR can be called a sport. How hard is it to drive a car in a circle for like four hours at 200 mph? That's not a sport. My dad is authentic redneck and he is a NASCAR fan, so I've had to listen to that garbage for years. I know I am being a bit hypocritical by insulting NASCAR when I said above that I wouldn't target the Olympics, but whatever.

 

I still consider wrestling the true American past time. I don't have grounds to say that wrestling has been around longer than baseball, but I would bet that it has.

 

Anyways, I started this thread so that whenever anyone sees or reads about an "ignorant outsider", it can be shared in this thread.

I agree, i think Seb has come across as a bit thick when saying this because like you said, not all of it is fake. He's probably not the only person who probably thinks this way, thats a problem when it comes to being a wrestling fan, having to explain to a non-wrestling fan why you watch it and then explain that its not completely fake. The irony in Seb Coe might watch a soap opera, which if you think about it, is just wrestling without the physical competion. Yet you never hear anyone call that fake.

I agree too. I wouldn't call it a fake I call it sports entertainment. That's what it is. I get involved with the storylines and I root for certain people and then there's other's I can't stand. It may not be the Olympic style of wrestling put it is a sport with physical contact and injuries occur. He shouldn't get on his high horse there have been alot of doping scandals in the Olympics and I don't remember a recent games (summer or winter) when someone hasn't been stripped of a medal or banned for taking illegal substances. So much for pure athletics (not all just some).

Not to mention the WWE doesn't have the musical aspects when something "emotional" is happening. Also, there's not much crying in wrestling anyways. Again, from Beyond The Mat, I think that Vince McMahon gave an accurate description to the WWE- "We Make Movies". I still hold that to be true, even though they really are making movies now.

 

Sure, WWE has had some scandals, but all sports have scandals. I understand that there have been more deaths in the WWE than other sports, but I think when you talk WWE Vs. Hollywood, that's a different story. Not to mention that WWE is trying, not overly hard, but they are trying to do away or cut down on drug use/abuse. I think it's a brave move to allow former WWE stars to enter rehab on WWE's dime and I think it's a smaller brave move that they started running those new promos that say that "there are no shortcuts to your dreams", not to mention the regular "Don't Try This At Home" messages (that you are almost forced to watch on WWE DVD's).

I'm talking in terms of wrestling. I don't care about Coe's "athletic background". I take exception to his comments, not to his athletic achievements. Granted, I think you are just trying to start an argument as opposed to partaking in the discussion.

And I think you're reacting to the comments without any knowledge of the current situation in UK Athletics. I think you're making reactionary statements in the style of the gutter press. If you understood Athletics more and understood the issues of performance enhancing, especially with an Olympics in China of all places coming up then you'll realise what a temper tantrum your first post seems like.

Pro Wrestling isn't a sport because it is a work. Wrestlers sure are athletes but their performance in the ring, as much as fans deny it, is merely that of an acting performance. Sure many are very accomplished and can do some amaing things, but it is a worked environment.

I think the problem with people on the outside is they always seem to think us wrestling fans view it as a sport and we are stupid to watch something competitive which is pre-determined.

 

We all watch it for the drama, entertainment, artistic factors, the fact its pre-determined doesn't matter.

 

But the ironic part of what Coe says is "don't care about drugs". I mean that's not a huge arguable point is it? They say they care, but considering they've been "trying" to get drugs out of wrestling for over 15 years and nothing's changed, its a fairly accurate point.

We all watch it for the drama, entertainment, artistic factors, the fact its pre-determined doesn't matter.

Thats what always bugs me about outsiders viewing wrestling fans, they just presume we don't realise it's you know...not legitimate fighting like boxing or something. Its frustrating, I mean don't they think, us as fans would surely know more on that piece on information, than the non-fan does?

I'm not sure exactly what were supposed to be discussing here, but yes it's annoying when someone thinks they're about to shatter your illusiuons when they say it's "fake."

That's kinda surprising. Really it's only out of respect for the artform that I try to define: "fake" with the "outsider"... if they're willing to listen.
