His death was confirmed in a statement by the Football Association of Wales. The statement said: "We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family. We ask that everyone respects the family's privacy at this very sad time." Speed took over the Wales job in December 2010, and earlier this month, said the side's rapid improvement had exceeded all expectations. A 4-1 friendly win over Norway represented a third successive win for Wales, and Speed's fifth in 10 games as manager. At the time, he said: "We've progressed further than I'd have thought in this space of time but we've still got a lot of work to do." Speed won 85 caps for his country during a 14-year international career. He was given the top job in Welsh football despite only having four months managerial experience. RIP one of the best players in the Premiership, one of the best Welsh international players, and one of the most promising international managers in the world. BRM 220 Posted November 27, 2011 Share Posted November 27, 2011 Really has come as a bolt out of the blue. He was clearly someone who loved the game and played on much later than most. Yet he seemed to have found a new enthusiasm for the game recently through management, while it didn't really happen for him at Sheffield United at Wales he really had gotten a talented group of youngsters playing some great football that was getting results. Guest Keegan Posted November 28, 2011 Share Posted November 28, 2011 As a Newcastle fan, I saw Speed play quite a few times and even remember once when he went up for a header and came down in a heap, a worrying sight, and Butt, then playing for Man United, came over to make sure he hadn't swallowed his tongue. I respected Speed as a player. He was never my favourite but he had a great attitude and a real footballing brain. He was a senior player along with Given and Shearer while the likes of Dyer, Bellamy and Jenas were on the other side in the Newcastle dressing room during my favourite time to be a Newcastle fan. When he went into management, I thought he'd do a good job and he bagged the Wales job very, very early on and it's a difficult task managing them, given they haven't qualified for any tournament since 1958, the year my mother was born. However, they deserved a point at Wembley and did really well in the final group games to qualify for Euro 2012. The general consensus being Speed had done a good job and had some top players in the form of Bale and Ramsey with others coming through. To hear he had died at only 42 completely shocked me. A friend sent me a message yesterday and I was stunned. Another, who I knew was a big fan of Gary as a player, later wrote to tell me he was gutted. I thought he'd be in management for years and maybe even be a contender to manage Newcastle, Leeds or Everton in the future, three of the clubs he represented in his career. Rest in peace, Speedo. His family now have to pick up the pieces from such an act of selfishness, and I can't understand why he would do this when he had so much going for him. Paul 584 Posted November 28, 2011 Share Posted November 28, 2011 As I said on someones facebook when they said the same It would be selfish, if he was in a 'normal' state of mind when doing it. If he was suffering from depression then his entire world view could have been changed, what he saw as 'normal' and 'selfless' could be so far away from what we see as the norm that we just cant understand it at all. He may well have considered what he was doing as the best thing for his family. A life without him may have seemed to him a better path for them. If he was suffering from depression (and unless something else pops up I'd suggest thats probably true) then dont even try to work it out, and certainly dont be disgusted or anything. I think Michael Owen said he drove past his house, on the day he did "it", and he said hello back to him? Just feels like something is missing in all of this. Perhaps something was about to leak into the papers, that he just couldn't bare it? You're right though, IF he was suffering from depression, then it's impossible to really comprehend his emotions at that time. / sad face Still doesn't change the impact this will have on his family though.
