Posted September 1, 201311 yr Whilst we're on the subject of biggest derbies in the world, what are the biggest 5? Glasgow, Manchester, Utd/Liverpool, Real/Barca, Milan, Rome, Boca/River? Anything else? Swindon/Oxford :P? Cheers!
September 2, 201311 yr Fenerbahce/Galatasaray for sure. Eclipses the North London derby and the Manchester derby IMO. The Rome derby and Boca/River come close to it and possibly eclipse it. I refuse to accept Utd/Liverpool and Real/Barca as derbies as they are not from the same city.
September 2, 201311 yr That derby is a biggun, and I'd pay good money to go to one of those matches, but no matter how great an occasion it is, I don't think you can call it the biggest with a straight face. I also take your point about a derby having to be from the same city, but disagree. Derbies are neighbour against neighbour, not just city rivals. Barca vs Real is a fair point though. It's not so much a derby, more so a massive game. Cheers!
September 2, 201311 yr Ajax vs. Feyenoord is the most genuinely hateful "local" rivalry in Western Europe (They're in bordering states, does that count?). Only thin that comes close in a non-scary country is Rangers vs. Celtic, but I'd say Ajax/Feyenoord is worse. It's very small and local, but West Ham vs. Millwall, when it happens is also f*cking horrific. Chelsea vs. Millwall can be bad too, but it never really happens. September 2, 201311 yr Pool/Utd, Celtic/Rangers, Barca/Madrid, Boca/Rivet, Utd/City. Mentions aswell to London and Merseyside derbies.
September 2, 201311 yr I refuse to accept Utd/Liverpool and Real/Barca as derbies as they are not from the same city. Thats so much as saying that Newcastle/Sunderland isn't a derby. I would'nt say the clubs have to come from the same city.
September 3, 201311 yr Yeah derbies aren't just from the same city, otherwise nothing other than St. Pauli vs. Hamburg and Bayern/1860 München would count in Germany. That being said, there's a quite a few derbies in Germany. Schalke vs. Dortmund and Hamburg vs. Bremen being the biggest ones currently. Then you've got a load of Rhine derbies, Cologne/Leverkusen, Cologne/Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen/Gladbach, Cologne/Düsseldorf and every team against each other. Can we add rivalries too? St. Pauli vs. Hansa Rostock tends to turn ugly as Pauli represent the left wing and Rostock the right wing.
September 3, 201311 yr Then you've got a load of Rhine derbies, Cologne/Leverkusen, Cologne/Mönchengladbach, Leverkusen/Gladbach, Cologne/Düsseldorf I have no idea why, but Cologne seem to have a big time derby with every other Westphalian team. When they got relegated and I was looking for a new top tier team to follow, I ended up having to take the cool option with Borussia, because they're the only team in the state who Cologne don't hate (other than Schalke, who are Nazis).
September 3, 201311 yr From personal experience Celtic/Rangers is a very passionate affair and I was too young to remember but my Dad and Brother both say Boca/River is very epic. Have to go again one day
September 3, 201311 yr Boca/River is often fatal so yeah, its pretty hectic. Man utd/Leeds is a rivalry that matters regardless of which division those teams are in if Man Utd went broke and went to League 2 and they met in the johnston paint trophy then the it would be as important to the fans as if both teams met in the premier league.
September 4, 201311 yr By no means the biggest, but certainly a biggie and well up there with the most glamorous derbies on the planet, has to be Arsenal/Chelsea, which is probably what TV companies would call "the London derby" for advertising purposes. You'd have the NLD, SLD, ELD, WLD etc... but for just being the overall London Derby, it's got to be these two. Southampton/Portsmouth is a pretty spiteful one on the south coast. Swansea/Cardiff has the potential to grow in to a big ugly monster now that both clubs are in the Premier League and look likely to remain there. The Bristol City/Rovers derby is a true one-city derby which gets a lot of coverage on ITV West at least :P. Those two sets of fans generally get on for most of the year except for when their next match is against the other, which hardly ever happens now. Genuinely speaking, one of the most spiteful and unpleasant derbies there is, lower leagues or not, is Swindon/Oxford. Swindon is a pretty grim to place on a good day, but it's reminiscent of Arkan's troops patrolling Sarajevo looking for ethnic Bosnian Muslims to slaughter, especially around the train station come match day. Cheers!
October 1, 201311 yr i would say (as a liverpool fan) the merseyside derby has lost a lot of the anger in recent memory and is one of the few derbies where the fans all mingle and sit together. now pool vs utd that is a game which brings a lot of hate from the shipping days and still runs through the game today. look at the song which are sung about hillsborough and munich from a select few and the shirt printing drama that happened a few seasons ago with sports direct. it was all just nasty. I think derbies in the EPL are tame though compared to the south american countries where there are deaths. Also the eatern european contries where it is organised to try and hurt/kill some of the opponants fans. The only bad blood feud derby in the UK I can think of is rangers vs celtic and that stems from religion. I guess millwall vs west ham/leeds/brighton also gets physical but not to the degree of the others but i think that is in part credit to the police and the football governing bodies. The real rivalries in the UK were in the 70's when hooligans were running rampant throughout england. Forest vs leeds was nasty then from the clough days. EPL clubs will always have rivals but its not the same (which is a good thing) as it was. As i say the merseyside derby is generally good natured now even though it holds the record for the most red cards in the premier league.
