How to improve the WWE commentary team?

Honestly, and i am sure to get heat for that, but i thin, when Cole is able to just provide match commentary he is actually quite good. I am much more annoyed with JBL than with Cole. And Jerry… well, he somehow does not play any important role anymore, except to provide for the occasional laugh, and then again also the occasional yawn.. so neither good, nor really bad. But JBL annoys me, and i am not sure if it is WWEs way of telling him how to work, or because he has lost it. The NXT team is actually providing better work. Let JBL be exchanged with William Regal i say, and i think i would be a happy man^^

King needs to retire and go back to funding the Memphis crime syndicate. Cole and JBL need to move to Vermont and get married since they're obviously gay for each other. They can do podcasts all they want just stay out of wrestling. Josh, Regal and Renee should be full time commentary for Raw and Smackdown.

It's probably an unpopular opinion but I don't like listening to Regal on commentary. He's fine most of the time but he goes into unnecessary detail far too often on the most insignificent of things and it leaves me thinking "...really?". I just don't care. A wrestler will use, I don't know, a wrist lock or whatever, and he'll give us a 5 minute explanation of how it can cause a scaphoid fracture, how the metatarsals are twisted and so on. It's a bit excessive and usually annoying.

 

The commentary team would probably be fine if they weren't scripted. JBL used to be great, Lawler was always quick witted and Cole wasn't as bad as he is now, though they're so tame at the moment. They should be three charismatic, well spoken, knowledgeable guys, just let them get on with saying what they want. If they are going to be instructed, tell Cole to stop shouting things like "THE KNEE!!! THE KNEE!!! THE KNEE!!! KNEE!!! KNEE!!! KNEE!!! BRYAN WITH THE KNEE!!! KNEE!!! THE KNEE!!!". It's terrible to listen to.

That Cole crap is one of the reasons I can't take pro wrestling seriously anymore or even watch it and it's bumming me out because I love the Shield but I just cannot bring myself to watch wrestling for a variety of reasons and one of the major one is Micheal f*cking Cole.

I actually don't mind Alex Riley on commentary. He does a pretty good job of heeling it up on NXT. Tensai isn't completely awful either.

 

I think the main difference between NXT commentary and main show commentary is that the guys on NXT seem to be having way more fun with it than Cole, JBL & King. There's not as much forced laughter and gumph, and I could listen to Renee and Regal flirt all day.

Reading Twitter and I quite confess without the network I did not see the show but apparently Renee Young and Heyman were awesome and made some quite brilliant comments as well as apparently sexual attraction which sounded just wrong.

Surely that should be a good thing.

 

I mean, the stuff we see is being played as if real, so not treating it seriously would undermine that.

We definitely need a heel guy, a real play by play guy, and maybe a face guy to give the heel a bit of banter

 

What we definitely don't need is sappy JBL, "sell everything" Michael Cole and Grandad Jerry!

 

JBL was arguably one of the greatest heels in wrestling, so if they kept him and used him well he'd be great! Maybe they could give Alex Riley or Josh Matthews the play by play role as theyre the analytic type... as far as a face guy goes, I think that would be a bit trickier... Brad Maddox maybe, since he's out of a job at the moment

 

But, in actual fact, I don't think Jerry is that bad, and it would feel wrong to get rid of him after his commitment to commentary, but we just need to mix it up a bit

I think the real problem is the commentary has no life because it's micromanaged to the nth degree. Watch NXT and listen to Regal's commentary and it's wonderful. He explains moves and the effect they're supposed to have (the Cesaro swing being sold by Regal's commentary is the only time I've ever believed it offensively). Then watch RAW and you get "Maggle" telling you how to use the app, JBL clearly bored and frustrated with everything and Jerry just being Jerry, which hasn't been relevant since Stone Cold Steve Austin refused to job to Brock Lesnar.

 

I know it's because they want the commentary to be more accessible to casuals and less "sport-like" and I know it's not seen as commentary anymore but as a way of giving key information to the audience and selling their product but... every week it just makes me miss JR more and more. Michael Cole doesn't sound like a wrestling commentator, he sounds like a war correspondent delivering dire news in a squawking monotone. JBL has no one to play off and I scarcely remember what King says these days.

Yeah I definitely think Byron makes a decent heel commentator - he antagonises the others just the right amount
