I wouldn't take tonight too harshly. People forget that Chelsea lost to Basel twice last season, and then made it to the semi-finals, they're one of those weird teams that natural just seem like they should suck, but they really don't.

 

If this wasn't coming off the back of a winless month, I'd say it was an over-reaction but, when you're coming off loses to West Ham and Aston Villa, suddenly losing to Basel seems more ominous than maybe the single result should.

I said it from day one that buying Mario would come back and haunt Rodgers and I think I've been proven right so far, all he does now is just shoot from outside the box.

Yeah, proven right so far, and at a push. It may seem ridiculous when the black-n-white is that Liverpool were brilliant, sold Suarez, bought Balotelli, and are now pretty gash, to say that it can be anything other than a Balotelli problem... but I don't think it is a Balotelli problem. I think it's a Sturridge being injured problem. I think it's a Sterling needing a rest problem. I think it's a new signings needing a few matches to bed in problem.

 

However the biggest problem is the lack of dealing with those problems.

 

If I were a Liverpool fan I'd expect more from the "base" of my team. I'd want the defence to be better, the midfield to be better, and I'd also want those two departments to work with better unity until the attackers and all those problems are resolved.

 

To be fair I don't really see Balotelli et al missing chance after chance, I see Liverpool struggling to create better chances for the strikers.

I haven't forgotten about Basel being a good side and Liverpool going through depends on their home form. The Real Madrid games should be tasty.

 

As an Arsenal fan, I am very happy about Welbeck's performance against Galatasaray, I bet Van Gaal feels a bit like an idiot with the Welbeck lack of composure quotes.

If Bobby Zamora can run your backline ragged then Benzema, Rodriguez and Ronaldo will give you guys nightmares.

 

Then again it is a huge game and occasion for the club, one that could well inspire the best in them - the question is will Super Mario live up to his nickname or once more disappoint? If he shoots from long range and skies it over the bar one more time when he has team mates clear I think Rogers will put him down on the pitch then and there.

 

Don't like Arsenal's chances as well - ravaged by injuries in defence, no first choice or reserve keeper, short of Ramsey and Giroud and even Ozil - could be a nervy night for the Gunner fans and players.

Seriously, at the moment the only team with a chance of stopping them scoring is Barca this weekend as unbelievably they are still yet to concede in La Liga.
