Layla is retiring...

Layla announces her retirement from WWE

38 year old Layla has announced her retirement from the world of professional wrestling after a 9 year stint with the company.

Layla started with the WWE in 2006 when she was a contestant in the WWE Diva Search contest, a contest that she eventually won. She worked backstage interviews before transitioning to the ring and eventually being part of Extreme Expose` in ECW with Brooke and Kelly Kelly.

After moving back to Smackdown, she teamed up with Michelle McCool to form one of the most successful Diva pairing in the history of WWE, Team LayCool. In 2012 she she won the WWE Divas championship at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view, a title she lost to Eve Torres after a reign of 140 days.

Following a brief angle where she was Fandango’s dance partner, she teamed up with Summer Rae to form the Slayers but the team disbanded shortly after Layla had to undergo surgery earlier this year.

“I feel like deciding to retire from the ring has been a hard decision to make because I’m passionate and I love performing. I’ve known everybody in that company now for nine years. They’re family. I spend more time with crew and Superstars and Divas on the roster than I did with anybody else,” Layla told WWE.COM.

When asked what’s next for her, she said she might do some TV stuff in the United States or United Kingdom or maybe go back to the Miami Heat and start choreographing their cheerleaders.

“I’d like to tell WWE Universe “Thank you” for always being loyal to me. They’ve seen me through my good times and in my bad times. In one of the first interviews when I won the Diva Search, I said to the fans, “I won’t let you down,” and I truly feel like I can walk away saying I have attained anything that any Diva was able to attain,” Layla said.

Retires, gives up as there is no chance she will be givien a push again, same difference I guess

Really explain that Jay, you think someone would voluntarily give up their WWE money just because they weren't getting a big push? Don't be so stupid, the only person who's retired like that was Punk and that's only because he thought he could do something else off the back of the publicity of it all.

Some other people have done that, they weren't getting any where and asked for their release, i really think she looked at her career saw it was going no where and wanted to give up and try something new, its not the first or last time it has happened

Why did she not retire last time she got seriously injured then? Or why not go to TNA or another company and continue to work?

You know maybe she's retiring because she's too beat up to continue, you know, like how most people choose to retire from active competition in sports. It's not always an excuse to have a bash at the WWE, however much you personally might view them as the great satan of wrestling.

Doesn't really read like that "gives up as there is no chance she will be [sic]givien a push again" is a loaded sentence. Had he said "isn't likely to get another push" then maybe you have a point. He's clearly making a statement about how Layla has been "givien up on" by the WWE which isn't really the case, she's just been near perma-injured since her best run.

That was not the meaning i was trying to put across, i was basically saying she was giving up because she was never going to get another push again, nothing about WWE's booking decisions not to do that, she is basically washed up so she "Retired"

Mainly I think the years or touring and injuries have caught up with her - I mean her knees alone have to be screwed up at this stage and with the new direction the Divas are looking to take at the moment maybe it is right to step out of wrestling and do other things.

Sad to see her go though, as DC alluded to she was an underrated Diva in her generation outside of her Lay-cool work and it was a shame the knee injuries struck just as she was getting better in the ring and expanding what she could do.
