UFC 193

I know this has already been mentioned in another thread but I thought it'd be worthy of it's own topic. What did people think of the main event? Does it go down as the biggest shock in UFC history?

I'm glad Rousey lost. She has an awful attitude and really isn't good enough to back up some of the nonsense she comes out with. Her striking ability is really poor, she has no concept of defence and I'm glad to see someone exploit those flaws.

Thoughts on the show/main event?

Ah I wouldnt really go that far. She was 12-0 and had blitzed everybody she's ever fought. I dont think its a case of her not being good enough because you only have to be good enough to beat the people in your division, so if they're not very good its irrelevant. She hasn't really ever fought any top competition, the womens divisions are both extremely weak and womens MMA in general is weak but you can only fight who's in front of you. She's good enough to back up everything she says compared to everybody else in her division (barring Holm, obviously).

Her striking has always looked better than it is because she fights people who are even worse at it than her, you put her in there with an actual pro boxer and she was exposed. Great for Holly though and after seeing how badly she deals with a good striker you'd have to think Cyborg would be odds on favourite to beat her too, even though her striking isnt technical at all.

I love Ronda and the hate she has received since she lost has been in such bad taste. She has got the attitude she has by smashing everyone she has ever faced in less than 1 full round (except Misha Tate). In a way I am glad she lost as she will realise that the way she went into that fight was wrong.

She didnt look right from the start. She looked sluggish and slow. Holm took advantage and its not her problem Ronda didnt bring 100% to the fight IMO. Holm deserved to win that fight and I was suprised it took as long as it did as she landed a lot of big hits in the 1st round. That head kick though was a thing of beauty.

Ronda will learn a lot more from this loss than if she had beaten Holm. Everyone has jumped on the bandwagon saying she deserves it and is arrogant etc. Yes she is arrogant but you have to be to lead a whole division the way she has for the last few years. The exposure she has received has been unparrelled in UFC and if that doesnt give you an inflated ego then nothing will. As for whether she deserves it or not is ridiculas. Noone deserves to get knocked out but it is a possibility in their profession.

Man Dana did not look happy when he was putting that belt around Holm's waist. He's probably thinking another golden goose is about to get cooked...

As far as Ronda goes, I think as well she has reached as far as she can with her current coaching staff as well - they don't seem to be pushing her anymore and putting her in her place in regards what it takes to win - they really are like family members and friends and I wouldn't want that from a boss or a coach. They told her she won the first round for gods sake, when a blind walrus would have known different.

I'd want someone, well if it where me anyway, that would kick my ass and make me do better and I think given how big Ronda is now, given her status and the possible compliancy and stagnation that can occur she needs that too.

She looked gassed, she looked like the cut wasn't as easy for her as Holm, she looked like she thought she could win by just turning up whereas Holm looked fresh, she looked lean and fit and hungry, very hungry and the result shows that.

I think there will be a rematch and if the old, early career attitude and work ethic Ronda shows up it could be a damn site closer but lets not take anything away from Holm - she has had nearly as much MMA experience as Ronda and is undefeated and previously is a three weight champion of the world in boxing so she has the drive and talent as well as the work ethic to work on her takedown defence and take away her opponents obvious strengths so she can use hers.

I'll call it now though - if Ronda loses the rematch then she'll retire.

The re-match will be far bigger than this fight so I doubt he's panicking just yet, and he was smiling and laughing when he was in the cage so...also, on the weight cut, Ronda is a natural 145lb fighter, thats where she started and thats why Cyborg moans so much so without the IV's now maybe 145 is where she needs to be, I'm sure the UFC would bend over backwards to start a 145lb division for her. Makes the Cyborg fight a no brainer at that point too.

And I have no idea why my posts font size is changing with the odd word bigger than the rest. Thats fucking annoying!

Beside having an un competitive womens division does no one good. Her winning all the time was killing the division. Edited by Kam

Fixed. If you ever have stuff in the formatting you don't want, on the formatting menu (when creating/editing a post) on the far right you have what looks like T icon and Y icon, the Y shows the formatting being used, so you can remove it manually from there.

According to Tazz the match was fixed due to Ronda taking time off after this fight regardless. Dont know how true it is but it would make sense as she didnt look right from the first bell.

I think its a possibility but I also think Ronda went in with a bad attitude and got her ass handed to her. She ate a lot of big hits in the 1st round and the kick to the head put her out.

Mate.....come on. Taz is a f*cking ass hat if he thinks it was a fix, its 100% not a possibility, at all. She didnt look right because she tried to stand a box with a pro boxer.

I cant even believe this is a topic of discussion quite honestly.

The champion winning all the time doesn't kill the division (in the same way it didn't kill the divisions when Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and GSP were "unbeatable" champions).

Just a little more on this from the Wrestling-Online Newlsetter for those that are interested:

TAZ ALLEGES ROUSEY VS HOLM FIGHT WAS A WORK

- Former WWE and TNA color commentator Taz is all over the headlines after he stated on his daily morning radio show that the UFC Bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm was a work. Taz, discussing the outcome on The Taz Show on CBS’ Play. It, said that he’s been around enough to know when something is a work. He explained how Rousey was going to disappear for several months and keeping the title on her wouldn’t have been best for business. He also said that the kick to the neck that Holm landed wasn’t enough to knock Rousey out while the following three ground and pound punches either missed or hit Rousey’s shoulder. The former ECW champion added that the referee wasn’t probably on it and not even Holm and the ref only stopped it as Rousey was not defending herself, in line with MMA rules. His allegations made it to several news websites and Taz was both praised and abused on Twitter for his theory. He made it clear that he did not mean to disrespect Rousey, Holm, or the UFC but the way the whole thing transpired, including the Dana White interview on FOX Sports following the knockout, only keeps confirming his idea that the whole thing was a work.

Is Tazz on crack these days? Has the lunacy of TNA infected his mind to the point where he can no longer distinguish reality from make-believe? Or does he still believe he was a bad ass MMA fighter himself who knows all about the industry because he did some Judo classes back in the 90's?

Work, how can it be a work? Also if the ref and Holm didn't know about it then its not a work, you've shot yourself down straight away - he's basically accusing Ronda of throwing the fight because she wants to leave the UFC and Dana wants to build up a rematch for a bigger buy rate next time. Thing is, Ronda is one of the faces of the UFC and her career and credibility outside of it for the most part is built upon her being an unbeatable badass whose not bad looking.

Her leaving, her losing, her turgid performance - all of these things are bad for Ronda both in the octagon and out of it as well as the UFC. So Tazz is wrong, as wrong as wrong can be.

I dont want it to be a fix. I just look at all the other match fixing stories creeping into every other sport recently and watching Ronda's last few fights and then this one it is weird. Not in the fact she got her ass handed to her it was the manner in which she did. In all probability she took 2-3 big hits early on in round 1 and was punch drunk from there on out. I dont want Tazz to be right. Even though I love Ronda and want her to win every fight she is in, she lost to the better prepared fighter and lost in a big way.

Looking at Ronda's previous fights noone has really touched her (except Misha) so she may have a glass chin due to not taking any hits. I just thought it was interesting what Tazz was saying. Maybe the fight came too soon after her last one? Maybe the weight gain then drop affected her more than she realised? Only Ronda knows if any of these things affected her. Only her and Dana know if it was a fix. If it is then UFC is no better than WWE and it loses the high ground in terms of 'what we do is legit' etc and all the MMA fans cant say anything to wrestling fans anymore.

If you dont want it to be a fix then you'll be happy, this is 100% not a fixed fight. Look at the beating her face took throughout round one, look at the shot she took that put her on queer street right before she turned directly into that kick, she was all over the place.

By all accounts she was completely ill-prepared to fight Holm and believed so much in her own hype that she underestimated her and because of that, she got the shit kicked literally out of her. You have to remember, Taz had a pissy on a few months ago when Dana called wrestling fake, now he's creeped out of the woodwork when UFC's biggest star loses and calls it fake, its just petty nonsense from Taz.

On top of all this, Rhonda losing is the worst possible thing for UFC, they have now pretty much lost the huge Rousey/Cyborg fight and their brightest star has just been dimmed. Tell me one good thing that comes out of Rousey losing for the UFC? And Taz's reason that she is taking time off so she has to "drop the strap" is so ludicrous, she will be ready to fight in July at UFC 200, most fighters only fight twice a year anyway so you'd never notice she was gone. Come on.

I agree totally. I thought that myself when Tazz said about her taking time off. I literally thought 'how often to UFC fighters actually fight a year?' Ronda was thrown into this fight against Holm due to an injury cancelling their previous main event for 193.

I dunno I just worry about all sports being fixed to some degree. I think it watching some EPL games, boxing, rugby etc. Just thinking how can a team/person be so good one game/match/fight then so bad the following. Athletics, cricket and F1 have damaged me when it comes to fixing and team orders. I just dont trust anything anymore. I know Ronda got her ass handed to her and the right fighter won that fight. Tazz has just thrown that 1% of doubt into my mind about if Ronda threw the fight, but you are right it would do nothing good for Ronda or UFC for her to lose that fight. The star she has become in the last 2 years has been incredible and noone could of seen it coming. I think more than likely is she burnt out and forgot she is actually human and needs to train, rest and prepare for a fight and that she would walk in knock out Holm and just wander back to Hollywood and continue her life.

She was wrong.

No real competition made it dull, this was the best thing to happen in a while.
The Jon Jones and Anderson Silva fights weren't dull in the slightest. GSP wasn't as dynamic, but again wasn't dull as ditch-water either for the most part.

On the topic at hand, Rousey's fights were also never dull (sure, they weren't long either).

What you're essentially saying is that someone holding the belt for a long time is bad. Does that mean you would rather a title changed hands every time it was on the line? Would that be more exciting?

Whilst I agree it is good for the division for Ronda to lose. I disagree it was dull. With Ronda as champ the female division grew in popularity and headlined for the first time.

So not only do I disagree but it would seem so does most other UFC fans. Ronda was a huge draw.

  • 1 month later...

So this show did 1.1 million buys.

Say what you want about women's MMA but this show was headlined by 2 womens bouts in a foreign market on a Sunday afternoon in front of 56,000 people. A lot of this can obviously be put down to Rondas popularity. But even Holm was welcomed back to New Mexico with a homecoming parade that up to 20,000 people attended.
