Everybody must have heard of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at least once in their lives. This classic was my first wuxia (Chinese martial arts) movie and the beginning of my love for the genre. I even wanted to learn the kung fu at some point! Which kung fu movies do you like?

I used to watch old kung fu movies with my grandfather when I was a kid, so this topic has hit me with a wave of nostalgia. Some of the best ones had English speakers dubbed over the original foreign version. Of course, the dialogue was always several seconds behind which created some hilarious scenes.

Do you remember the title, @ShadowEdge? Personally, I liked it best with a subtitle. Their accents had me cracking up in a good way. At times, what makes a movie is its dialogues and the way the actors deliver them.

 

What about the modern ones? You must have heard of Jackie Chan or Jet Li, but are you familiar with their movies?

The movie series "Once Upon A Time In China" is the one that led me to like Chinese movies. The best Chinese movie for me is the "Forbidden Kingdom" where my 2 favorite martial artists (Jackie Chan and Jet Li) fought each other.

I thought The Forbidden Kingdom had too many visual effects for a movie featuring two professional martial artists, but having Jackie Chan and Jet Li on the same screen covered all its flaws.

 

The one Chinese movie that really stays with me is Kung Fu Hustle. I will always remember the fighting sequences and all the silly jokes leading up to an epic finale. (I was laughing until I cried and my stomach hurt!) Give your time to Kung Fu Hustle immediately if you haven't; you won't regret it!

Stephen Chow is a master of this type of movies. Have you seen Shaolin Soccer for this matter? Some of the actors from Kung Fu Hustle were in that movie as well, and Stephen Chow was the main character and director.

I enjoyed Shaolin Soccer as well, though the superhuman element took away some points. It should be fine mixing fantasy and reality on the paper, but it somehow made the kung fu sequences look unnatural. Shaolin Soccer seems to prefer the comedy than the action.

 

I missed Stephen Chow's action movies. I haven't checked his newer works even though I heard many praises about them.

Have you guys seen the movie of Jackie Chan, "The Foreigner"? It was my first time to see Jackie played a serious role. I never thought he had that talent because I usually see him as a funny guy.

Jackie is great with humorous films but not so much with the drama. His personality is very light so acting very serious doesn't really suit him.

Yes! Ip Man was brilliant. Was it an accurate portrayal of Ip Man's life? I was surprised when I learned that Ip Man was Bruce Lee's teacher because I thought his martial art's style was quite different from what his pupil. Chinese kung fu is far from brutal, but I especially respect and admire the silent power in Ip Man's Wing Chun.

Oh yeah, the Ip Man. I heard that there will be the 4th installment of this movie franchise. The actor that portrayed Bruce Lee was very funny because he almost exactly copied the moves of Bruce.

Really? That's wonderful! Google says there isn't an official release date yet, which is disappointing, but now I know what to expect. Cheers! The summary makes me wonder if we are going to focus more on Bruce Lee as his star pupil, but I would probably be content just to see Donnie Yen's charisma as Ip Man once more.

I hope it is true! Reading about these actors lately makes me realize how old they are now. Soon they won't be able to do any dangerous stunt to avoid injury. I hope to see one more film, a final project, preferably something grand enough to be the magnum opus at the end of their careers.
