Is anybody following this franchise and the new TV series? I wasn't exactly planning to watch it, but I saw the ads and decided to give it a try. I like dystopian setting in general because I believe we can always learn something out of it. The Purge is probably a weird lesson about crime, but there are interesting stories beyond the surface.

 

What do you guys think about the first episode?

It has promise, but I felt the same way about the Condor television series and was disappointed a couple of episodes in. Basically, the jury is still out for me. I'd like to have seen more back story of each character and the government before the purge, but maybe we'll get those through flashbacks.

I'm glad you started this thread, Luna, as I'll definitely be streaming it every week and it's nice to chat about it. I come up with the most ridiculous questions when it comes to The Purge franchise. Are churches, nursing homes, and such considered sanctuaries? What time zone are we working with here? I figure the hours have to follow Eastern Time in the United States in order to keep your financial markets humming. Why don't those wealthy people flee to another country? Like I said, I contemplate the silliest things. I'd like to prepare just in case...

Churches definitely aren't sanctuaries as terrible crimes take place right inside a church with religious onlookers happily there.

I've seen the first two films in the franchise, but don't recall any murders or other crimes in church. Maybe I missed that part or it happened in a later film. I haven't watched the first episode of this television series yet, but I'm looking forward to streaming it this weekend. I don't mind spoilers at all and appreciate your humouring my many questions.

As far as I know, the only safe place is outside the country. I can't recall any murder in hospitals, though. Our protagonists can't escape because they have jobs to do (plus their personal agenda). It is scary when someone comes after your life, but think of it the other way: you get to kill someone without legal complications. Jane is certainly interested in that idea. Nobody is as simple as they look.

I'm not sure which is more chilling - that so many people with and without affluence buy into the propaganda that it's beneficial to have that 12-hour window where anything goes, or that so many individuals and groups found ways to make money off it.

 

Did you watch the latest episode?

Interesting to hear about this. I had to look it up on Wikipedia, because I have not heard of it in the UK, and I don't think it is available here. It may be shown in the future - if so, it will be interesting to see which channel takes it on.

 

The premise certainly provides food for thought.

@AmyRichmond I'm in Wales and you can watch The Purge series on Amazon Prime Video which is included with Amazon Prime. The only minor negative is that the latest episode becomes available about a day after it airs in the U.S. so you have to make the effort to avoid spoilers if that matters to you.

I think you'd enjoy the series more if you watch The First Purge which is the prequel to the whole thing. I ask tons of wrestling questions that you've cheerfully answered, so shoot me a message anytime and I'll do my best to fill you in. I'm from the UK too (London) so we'll see it on the same day. I haven't found the series playing elsewhere in the UK, have you?

Yes, and I'd like to know what Alison is up to! Lila and Jenna seem like they're in love and there's definitely more to that story. I found it hilarious that Jane hired a contract killer and wished to watch the purging of her harasser-boss on an app. We're not that far from that as a society really. Major violent crimes have appeared on social media in real-time. Yes, they're removed quickly, but the fact that someone took the time to film it and post it where it could be seen by many people shows how easy it is to slip into the purge mindset.

A minister was a purger at one point and several purgers entered a church and murdered most of those inside. At some point, victims were brought to be "martyred" before the violent congregation of purgers, so no, churches aren't safe. I think the religious faction of the pro-purge movement strongly mirrors those who believe in the prosperity gospel in the U.S. The prayers they recite and the words they use twist the Bible out of context to favour their moneyed agenda. Gosh, I hope my comparison between the two religious groups doesn't offend anyone. I mean no harm.

 

Are level 10 political leaders exempt? I know that rule was lifted during The Purge: Election Year, but I'm not sure where the television series in the time line.

Just my opinion but The purge movies sucked.

And yes, I was being fuzzy about churches because I didn't know if it were a spoiler, but I do remember at least one scene taking place in a church. As for the timeline, who knows? But yes, according to the announcement, level 10 leaders are immune.

Thanks! I kept forgetting to pay close attention to it. Streaming from Amazon Prime is usually okay, but not with this series for some reason. Lots of buffering...or what seems like buffering. Then I guess our time frame is sometime before the Election Year came out.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned so much about the churches. I figured all the films have been out for a while, so no longer spoilable (is that a word???), but really The First Purge hasn't been out that long. I hope I didn't spoil it for too many watchers.

I actually want to be surprised by the supporting characters. You can say that Alison and Lila have happy-go-lucky faces most of the times. The cracks are more visible on Lila because of her history with the pair and her parents' status, so I hope Alison steps up her game as well. After all, the office arena is too big for Jena to hunt alone. I'm still wondering about her target, though.

I'll mention this in my review, but according to the "factoids" USA aired during the commercials, the show takes place between the first and second movies.

Just my opinion but The purge movies sucked.

 

You are not alone on this one. I still watch it because I don't have anything else to watch. I would rather follow a TV adaptation of a Mayan civilization wherein the killing or sacrifice of human lives has a meaning in those times than just random killing in the Purge.

I'm truly curious to watch this. I like The Purge movies, but I don't understand how they want to make a TV series out of this. I enjoy the 1,5 hour version of the night of the purge, but I feel like the separate storylines may be too boring.

Hi Ogmore, thanks for the information about where to find this programme in the UK. However I do not have Amazon Prime, so unfortunately, I still can't watch it. I don't know many people in the UK who have Amazon Prime.

 

Hopefully, one day, it will be shown on a different channel, so perhaps then I will get the chance to watch it.

I'd say that the stories we have so far are quite good. We can guess some points correctly, but the rest is mysterious enough for me. I try not to think too much and enjoy the flow.

Up to episode 4, we've seen some helpful hands in the middle of the Purge chaos. We know most of their motives except the man. Do you have any theories? He will probably meet Miguel first, though I actually prefer that he meets the others as well. Jane obviously needs some help.
