When you were young someone must've asked you, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" What kind of answers did you give? Did you always give the same answer or did it change over the years? Did you ever make them a reality?

It changed a lot because I had so many things I wanted to try. I really enjoyed flying when I was little, so I wanted to be a stewardess. I also thought about studying architecture in reality after enjoying building houses in The Sims game. I also considered being a travel guide at a point when I couldn't become a stewardess. I couldn't realize any of my childhood dreams, but I think I still have the passion in me.

 

What about you, Maya?

Yes, I remember a couple of people asking me this. One day I was over to ("over to" ... is that how you say that?) one of my mother's friend's houses, and I was there to do some cleaning. I was a little girl, and one of my passions was cleaning, so I use to help in that area any time the opportunity presented itself. So, my mother's friend asked me, as I was cleaning her house, during the course of our conversation, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" And I said, "A maid." She was not happy. She was asking me why I would say such a thing, and that I should reach for more in life. It's like, she had a problem with me wanting to be a maid, but she didn't mind that I was cleaning her house. I mean, I get it, I guess.

I'm glad that the boss Martha Stewart appeared on the scene and became a billionaire showing people that working around the house is not a game, and nothing to look down on. I love Martha Stewart. So, in answer to your question @Maya, I would say yes, in a manner of speaking I have made this "maid" dream a reality in that I've been able to make my love of all things housekeeping a nice hustle for myself.

 

The other person who asked me this question was a teacher that I had in school. I didn't get a chance to tell him what I wanted to be because he asked me the question via a letter. He, however, told me what he thought I should do, which is to be a writer. That has worked out nicely as well, although I'm not a published author yet, however, I'm working on it.

 

Oh, and I also wanted to be David Letterman's wife. Don't judge me:sneaky:.

I really fancied being a film director! But that never came to pass, and actually, I don't mind - my interests have moved on. At one point I rather liked the idea of being a doctor, because a friend of mine decided that was what she wanted to do, but then I realised that I was far too squeamish to do medical stuff. My teenage self was very squeamish, but I am not so bad now. Then I told another friend I wanted to write novels: well, perhaps one day I might do that!

The same thing happened to me. It also fooled me into thinking that getting promotions would be a lot easier than it turned out to be.

 

My mom had me go through my old things from preschool and early elementary school earlier this year. There were quite a few, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" The answers ranged from a wizard to a bear. I sadly didn't become either of those things.

When I was in primary school I wanted to be a nurse, but later on I realised that nursing is not that well paid. In high school I dreamed of being an actor and appearing in movies.

 

However I ended up working in retail. It is not particularly well paid, but I like the people I work with.

 

At the moment I am looking at upgrading my qualifications to try to get a better job. Or I may try to get a more supervisory position and move into management.

I had this weird phase where I wanted to be a geologist. I think I was 10, and I would borrow books from my sister's boyfriend who studied Geology in university. I'd read all about erosion and the layers of the earth. I was a weird child. But then for a while I wanted to be a psychologist. But after studying psychology and interning I decided it wasn't for me.

I used to want to be a firefighter. But that was because one of my uncles who I used to look up to a lot, was a firefighter and he always told us stories about how he saved people from buildings. Now I am not sure how true they were or if he made the stories sound cooler than they were, but that's why I always wanted to be like him.

Hey Mendez, my parents told me that I would like to be a firefighter as well. However, what I can recall when I was little is that I wanted to be an astronaut or an archeologist. I still enjoy playing with soil, so I do the gardening often.

I don't think I ever wanted to be a firefighter, but in primary school they did take us to the local fire station to see the fire engines and meet the firefighters. They did a little talk for us and explained about their job.

 

I have always supported the firefighters when they have come out on strike.

 

Meanwhile, I plod along in retail dreaming of a more exciting job.
