Movie and TV disappointments

The Irishman should have been about 30 minutes shorter, and seeing Robert De Niro de-aged and with bright blue eyes was kind of awful. Have you recently seen a movie or TV show that was less than you hoped for?

I really hated Booksmart ! Seemed like the director and writers were trying way too hard to be woke. The two lead actors sounded like mouthpieces for people much older their characters, so in other words, like a couple of fakes.

The Twilight movies ended up being depressing. I liked the scenery of the pacific northwest, but the story-line and acting was SO much of a downer to me.

At least you have that as an excuse.... I watched them voluntarily, though it was, at least partially, ironic (I mean, seriously, what vampire fiction could hope to hold a candle to Buffy/Angel). As it turns out, not Twilight.

 

Though I will give both Robert and Kristen their due, since as shite as Twilight was, their output since could not have been more different. Not to mention, infinitely superior. In Twilight, they are pretty much the definition of actors being let down by the material they are given, as they have both proved since, though Rob especially.

 

I'm actually keen to see his take on Bruce/Batman which I would not have credited when I watched the Twilight series.

 

As for disappointments, well, the whole of the final season of Game of Thrones. The weird bit about this is, I don't actually have any problem with where it landed in the end, it's the getting there that was the issue.

 

 

Dany's turn was both rushed and botched, Cersei/Jamie felt rushed and awkward (though I'm not one to argue it betrays Jamie character. To me, that is fundamentally misunderstanding who he actually is.), and don't even get me started on the Night King/Arya. Fine with her being the on to kill him, just WAY too easy. NK vs JS with a sneak attack by Arya to end it as NK was about to kill JS would have made a SHIT LOAD more sense and fitted her (and NK and JS) character development better.

 

 

And, how can I not mention "Star Wars : The Rise of Skywalker" or, to give it the title it deserves, "Star Wars: The Epic Ass Pull from Nowhere"

Rise of Skywalker is the most recent example from me, and Game Of Thrones ending. I liked some of it, didn't like other bits, and I agree that there's plenty of stuff in the final season of Game of Thrones that just doesn't make much sense.

 

Rise of Skywalker tried real hard to tie up as many loose ends as it could, JJ Abrahms said that was a big deal to him to try and give the most satisfying conclusion to the entirety of Star Wars thus far as he could. You can tell when you watch it that they're trying - Unfortunately that causes the movie to start off at 100 MPH/KPH and even I missed some things that affected my perception of later events. I'm usually great about catching every important detail, but it just moved so fast it's near impossible to. There's also some aspects that I wish they'd dived into more. They never really explained that force bond between Rei and Kylo for instance, beyond mentioning that "it's been millenia since that type of bond has been seen". Ok? Can we hear a little more about it? No? Great.

 

But more than that, there's just a lot of stuff that happens because it needs to happen in order for the story to advance, not because it's what makes sense or what necessarily should happen. One non-spoilery example of this is when there's a chase scene between Stormtroopers and our rebel heroes in the desert. Rei, Chewbacca, all of them are on hover craft vehicles as is standard in Star Wars, but for some reason these Stormtroopers start pursuing them in these weird 1 wheel motorcycle looking vehicles. They're as big as a normal motorcycle but their wheel is 1 long wheel that looks like it should be on a tank instead. Anyway, the sole reason they use these weird wheel vehicles is so Rei can get clever and send some rope back to get caught in the wheel and crash the Stormtrooper. Great, it looked cool, but why the hell were they driving a wheeled vehicle in the first place? You virtually never see that in the Star Wars universe. It was only there to serve the chase scene, there was no other logical reason for it.

 

Stuff like that really annoys me.
