WWF, What's Going On?

I have criticised the WWF many times over the last few months for many different things, but now it's just getting silly.

There only appears to be one single storyline that is getting any mention at the moment in the WWF and that is the nWo's debut. Of course we know when this is going to happen. What happened to the days when debuts were kept a secret, and we were all kept guessing. The last one I can remember being a complete surprise to me was at St Valentines Day Massacre 1999 when Paul Wight debuted. Excellent debut, and WWF were planning to debut him at WrestleMania so everyone was surprised when he turned up. It's getting to be the same with wrestlers returns, Triple H heavily hyped return at Vengeance. The WWF then found out that H3 wasn't ready to go, so they canned it. However that still left people feeling ripped off that he wasn't there. When Triple H did finally return, everyone knew about it at least 4 days before because of SmackDown hyping it.

I miss the element of surprise in wrestling these days, I know this isn't a good example to use but WCW never gave that many ideas away, with regards to surprises and debuts/returns. My main example is Booker T winning the WCW Heavyweight Championship for the first time. A lot of people say that Booker didn't know himself until Russo's "shoot". However, in a copy of WCW Magazine from July 2000, Booker said he had a call 6 days before Bash At The Beach and was told that he was going to be the next Champion. People might say it was similar to Chris Jericho's victory at Vengeance, but myself and a few other people knew that with Austin, Angle and The Rock all being champions in 2001 and the ratings not improving, they needed to try something different. So yet again I was not surprised to see Jericho lift the belts.

Surprises in wrestling are few and far between and this could be a reason why people have stopped watching WWF because it is too predictable. I for one completely agree with that analysis.

Until Next Time

The NWO are only being used to try and get more PPV buyrates. And I think Triple H was only used to get the ratings up for Raw.

I dont think the WWF have had many surprises over the last few months, and I think thats mainly down to the Internet.

One thing about the Internet is that you always know whats happening behind the scenes with the WWF.

I remember when ECW "reformed" on raw - that was a total surprise for me. That was mainly due to me being on "holiday" (just back home), so I never went on the Internet, so I knew nothing about it.

Yeah I did miss the ECW Reunion out. That was a surprise for me for the same reason, I was in Dubai, I didn't use the internet, I saw RAW and WOW!

I think the internet problem is a big one, but false leaks are a possibility, they should look into. Maybe if the nWo weren't actually advertised as appearing at No Way Out, it might help it more. Maybe if they used "Coming Soon" or stuff like that. I don't know, I just like to be surprised and not watch predictable wrestling.

Thanks for the feedback Kam.

Excellent thread GrayGray (see, not too egotistical to admit it). The lack of suprises is indeed down to being told everything before hand. We've been told that nWo are back at No Way Out. Sure, the nWo will draw ratings but i think it would have been so much if they didnt tell us. WWF needs a few suprises to keep it fresh. False leaks could be a possibility but theres no such thing as a well-kept secret in wrestling anymore. WWF needs to think of something. Even bringing nWo in earlier would be suprising, but would work.

At least we know where the hardcore belt is. Why hasn't Taker been wearing, or carrying it about before he lost it to Maven?
