Inmate solution

Inspired by the discussion of animal rights, we now know that it costs about $70,000 to keep an inmate in America, I also found out it costs about the same to keep one in British prisons.

Obviously these inmates are now living in near luxury with free tv, good nutritional meals and congigal rights....

How would you solve this burning of money on the people who are supposed to suffer?

I'd say they ought to have access to nutritional food - basic right of man - but nobody needs television, conjugal rights might seem a luxury but do they lower the risk of shower-stall attacks?

I'm not convinced they're supposed to be "suffering" as such. Whether that's something enshrined in law or whether that's just my moral stance, I don't know.

A forty-hour week of work, three meals, bed, books and somewhere to excercise are all that ought to be offered. That would seem enough to offer to the incarcerated.

As far as the cost of keeping them - is there much that can be done? Prison Warden is a fast-growing service sector job (listened to Chomsky lecture this morning) and with more prisoners you need more wardens. And wardens need paying.

Another factor in the costs would be beuarocracy I guess. The Gov't needs to ensure that no one is mistreated, no one has any grievence (apart from "I don't wanna be here") and that health and safety procedures are super-stringent. For these kinds of things the gov't likes to rely on consultancies and they don't come cheap.

All this is my opinion and isn't based on any real fact except what seems like common sense to me. :)

To cut my opinion short, I'm similar to AC, they deserve their basic human rights. People should be scared of the consequences of committing crimes, particularly serious crimes but I don't think prison in this day and age is necessarily all about suffering.

I don't believe in the death penalty, but I also don't believe in taking the whole rehabilitation idea too far. Some people just can't be rehabilitated. Prison for me is either a place where you learn not to do wrong again or you stay there because society is a better place without you.

Depends on the crime. Paedophiles, Murderers. Kill them. Petty crime, make them work and do something constructive. I would personally watch Paedophiles and murderers being hung in the street.

With murderers and paedos they should be killed. They are animals that dont deserve to live. I think with foreign criminals, they should be sent back to where they come from. I dont see the point in us paying for criminals we dont want here at all.

For other criminals (burgulars etc) they should have to pay for them to be in prison. Say there stay in prison costs £8000, they should have to pay for it either staight through the bank or they are in debt.

See, you guys got it all wrong!

There are far worse fates then death. The murderers, pedophiles and rapists should have to suffer in a way that is long and drawn out...kinda like my rocket idea. They should have to give something back before they are taken out.

Hence the medical and scientific testing. Use the bastards up till their bodys are no longer useful.

Crule and unusual?

Yeah,so what!

I agree with murderers and pedophiles and rapists and terrorists and such being put to death. No one accidentally rapes or molests or commits acts of terrorism. People have accidentally committed murder but that is rare. Kill 'em. I like the idea of using them to find cures for cancer and other diseases. Let them do the dangerous jobs like bomb disposal.

Robbers and such should have to "pay their debt" to society. Hard, industrious work that benefits society such as cleaning up trash, paving roads, digging ditches etc... They should do something that offsets the cost of their care while incarcerated. That was the reason for coining the phrase in the first place.

And there would be no niceties like cable TV and such. You'd get a cot with a mattress and blanket. You'd get three meals a day if you worked in some fashion to earn it. You'd get to walk around in the excersise yard and if you want to work out do push-ups or something. If you behave, you can use the library facilities.

I go in to the prison and see these HUGE guys, jacked up on body-building supplements that they receive mail-order. They are extremely strong. At one site there are 200 inmates and 4 guards. the guards are all little old men who could be killed with minimum effort by the inmates. The only thing that stands between the inmates and freedom is a fear of getting re-captured.

depending on the crime, petty theft just get them to do comunity service in the local church, rape murder, or child abuse kill the bastards, sorry i know its not very forgiving like i should be being catholic and all that but they dont deserve any better than a long painfull death. I think it is a disgrace how long they are kept alive on death row for, if the did the crime kill em, if they didnt but u kill em anyway send the widow a box of choccies. Maybe then if you wont have to wait 20 years for their appeals to be deined then kill them anyway. I wish Britain would reinstate the death penalty, that way it wouldnt be so scary to go out at night alone.

I know you didn't just say that.

Agreed. Criminals abuse their right to justice after having denied justice to their victims. I am NOT cool with them being able to do that.

In all honesty the taking of life to pay for the loss of another life is a pointless exercise.

I don't beleive anyonehas the right to take the life of any living creature be it human or even trees, but experimenting on those who have given up the right to be called human or humane is a good idea. There are genuinely sick people in this world but they can be helped by the use of evil creatures to discover cures and preventions.

Eyes Adrift think on this also, 2000 years ago demons had funny names like Satan and Beelzebub, but today they have funnier names like, Heroin and Cocaine. Give it another 2000 years if we survive that long and you wil find that these will be the names of todays demons.

Prisoners think our punishments are harsh there was a woman last year in Africa who commited adultery who got the death penalty for it, (come on she only wanted some fun) but not just any death she was buried up to her neck then stoned to death the thing is she was in the process of coming around from the anasthetic of the cecerean she had just had to give birth to the baby she had concieved through her adultery, which she was forced to watch be killed too.

If thats what happens in Africa for fooling around I deffinately wouldnt like to kill someone or rob some mayors house or something.

Now that makes The Maxx' idea of cruel and unusual seem fairly nice
