Holyfield Suspended

Evander Holyfield's boxing career appears to be at an end after he was placed on indefinite medical suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission.

 

NYSAC chairman Ron Stevens said the decision had been taken in order to save the 42-year-old 'from himself'.

 

However, Holyfield has vowed to fight the ban and return to the ring.

 

The former world champion suffered an emphatic points defeat to Larry Donald at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, his seventh loss in his last nine fights.

 

That followed a ninth-round defeat to James Toney, when his trainer threw in the towel, and there have been growing calls for him to call time on his career.

 

He will now be unable to fight anywhere in the United States until he is cleared to do so by Dr Barry Jordan of the New York commission.

 

"I'm not looking to end his career if it's not warranted, but the health and safety of the boxer is the main concern of the state commission," said Stevens.

 

"To my practiced mind, Holyfield shouldn't be fighting any more. It's the responsibility of the state athletic commission to save a boxer from himself.

 

"Evander Holyfield has absorbed enough punishment throughout his great career. It's time the bleeding stopped."

The problem is, if people get into their profession so much, then they find it nearly impossible to back out when the time comes. Holyfield should hang up his gloves and retire, but like so many before him, he knows nothing but boxing and will strive to get back in the ring. If he ever does make it back, then something serious will occur making sure he cant go back, which is not a good option at all. Holyfield's last few fights have been abysmal (from what i have read), and he should realise that he cant do it anymore.

Its a shame, because he is a mess now. He would have been a legendary cruiserweight and ruled that division for decades really. Unfortuantly he became a good heavyweight but not has good as he would of been if he had stayed cruiser.

 

Im glad someone has stepped in though. It would be bad for boxing if they had another boxer like Ali, who couldnt retire and has been severely damaged because of it.
