Settle an arguement if you would

Me & my GF both like the Band Bon Jovi.

 

However one of us considers them to be a Rock band & the other a pop band.

 

So what do you guys think?

I'd have to say they are a rock band. I'm not suggesting for a second they are a good one but I don't see that you could call them a pop band.

 

Thing is, what is a pop band? Pop is an abbreviation of popular. They are popular, and about as mainstream as rock bands get I suppose.

 

However I hate pigeonholing bands and insisting they fall into one category anyway. The industry does that too much as it is. Bon Jovi, really, are only Bon Jovi. They are nothing more or nothing less.

Yes Jayden I hate putting a group in a catagory as well, some groups simply don't fit in a catagory.

 

Some like Bon Jovi do though & I consider them to be a Rock Band, Yes it was my GF who thinks of them as being a Boyband / Popband.

I'd say rock myself.

 

I was a big Bon Jovi fan back in the day, and still listen to their earlier stuff today.

 

My feelings on this are two fold.

 

1: The have been playing stadiums for 20 years, and play their own instruments.

 

2: most pop acts IMO only have a life of about 2/4 years as a band. As above BJ can claim to be above that.

Only label that matters... if you think they're GOOD and like them, or if you think they're BAD and don't.

Just to be different, I'd call them pop rock. Radio friendly. They aren't very heavy on the guitar front, using more different sounds. They have a heavier side, but its more on the pop front.

 

Although I think people are totally confused about the term "pop". Beach Boys were pop, yet they could play their own instruments, lasted over 20 years, and played stadiums.

 

Manufactured bands are maybe the term you are thinking of. Technically The Beatles can be labelled as pop. Essentially pop is making music which caters for the most broadest possible audience possible, and to me Bon Jovi do that.

There a rock band and a very good one I've seen before in concert about 4 years ago in the RDS lashing rain but it was still a good concert your probably there too Kurtmark?

Bon Jovi are difficult to pigeon hole because theyve musically evolved in the 20 years theyve been around, much like bands like Van Halen, they we're almost glam metal i nthe 80's, but evolved t be more ballad rocky as the decade turned, then seemed to release alot of very "pop" orented songs after that, before coming back late 90's and seeming almost classic rock

I'd call them a borderline rock band.

 

I enjoy them immensely but if you consider that Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and System of a Down are rock then to class Bon Jovi in the same category is difficult because Bon Jovi are clearly mainstream.

 

They are mostly a rock band :).

I would say they are stadium rock. Middle of the road rock, definately not pop

I'd say it's a bit of both pop and rock. As are darkness, and

some songs by gun's and roses etc.

 

Bon Jovi's cool, and I'll always love the song 'always'.

As it reminds me of Darkstar. :wub

 

I must also point out though, that what i class as rock music tends to be more of the heavy stuff, like metallica.

Yes 'The Body' I was at that concert, I also saw them Three other times here in Dublin.
