WWE To Release Jerry Lawler?; Dudleyz/WWE Update, & More

July 11, 2005 - Source: PWTorch

With the recent addition of The Coach to the RAW broadcast team, some speculation is taking place within WWE that Jerry Lawler could be moved off the team or even released by WWE possibly. The overwhelming opinion of Lawler in WWE is that he is seen as overpaid of what is asked of him and many feel The Coach can fill his shoes for a much smaller salary. It should be noted that Coach is said to be more popular and social with key members of the WWE production staff than Lawler is at this point.

This is crap news basically, he is a lot better than Coach, maybe they will only take him to Smackdown, but this is only speculation.

they have got a point though.. i would rather they fired lawler than Maven or Charlie Haas who actually wrestle on a regular basis
releasing someone who actually is passed his best....something of a unique occurance at WWE
So Lawler doesn't commentate on a regular basis, is that what you're saying, i mean Lawler is bigger than Haas and Maven because he is used more.

Nah He's stale as a comb-over hairstyle. I say it's good news if he's moved off the team, not so sure if he should be released but I guess they won't pay for doing nothing.

I say move on and let Coach do a good job.

I would prefer Heyman beside J.R. to be honest but he hasn't commentated since 2001 and he probably never will again.

no i'm saying lawler doesn't wrestle on a regular basis like the other maven and haas :worship

also why pay lawler more to do a job that the coach IMO can do just as well for less money .. and raw could use a heel comentator it's more interesting that way

The possible reason for Lawler being released is that Vince likes yes-men and according to his book, Lawler is not a yes man but Coachman is. Jerry won't work to a script on Raw. As for paying Coach to do Lawler's job, if you pay by value to the job, Coach would owe Vince money every week.

Coach is good yeah but lawler is a legend of the ring and the commentary box

I'd hate to see lawler go

Yep im a mark for JR and Lawler but i have been enjoying coach there too. I'd keep all three guys in there i think it works well. if i was gonna get rid of any announcer it would be Michael Cole. The guy just makes Smackdown even more crap.

I'd personnally put Cole over Lawler at this moment in time I must say.

Tazz and Cole have great chemistry I've always thought, maybe the commentary team aren't meant to sound like best friends and not always having a laugh but it works for them I think.

Cole sounds like a girl. He just generally annoys me.

King and JR know the business inside out and while they dont always show it i'll admit. JR's selling of matches stiil makes them that little bit better i think.

I'm sick of Lawler. Back in the mid-90s the guy was a goldmine on the mic. Now it's all racism, puppies, and boring one-liners he used years ago. I like guys who aren't yes-men, but in Lawlers case he might wanna start being one if it'll stop him being crap at the table.
Fantastic news. The guy is as stale as hell, and there are so many better colour commentators out there. Let Lawler mess around with his crappy Memphis stuff and let the talented guys like Coach rejuvinate JR.

I hope this is one of those rumours that turn out be to true. I'd raise a glass to that!

Strangely having Coach with them has actually helped Lawler as he does the gags which has shut Lawler up as he can't get an word in edgeways, and Lawler does now actually watch the match and occasionally offer something useful up.

It wouldn't suprise me if Lawler does leave RAW, but I don't think he'll leave the WWE. I believe he will go under one of the new "Legends" contracts, similar to what Paul Bearer, Roddy Piper, Billy Graham are under, which allows them to do promotional work for the "WWE Legends" programme with DVD's, Books, WWE 24/7 and public events and such like.

Two other possible explanations (only half baked theories so treat them as such! :P).

I've got several older WWF videos where it is the norm to have three commentators (eg. Bobby Heenan, Randy Savage and Alfred Hayes). Maybe no-one is going anywhere and it's just giving Coach something to do.

Or maybe it's J.R. that might move aside. He's heavily involved backstage (Senior Vice President of Talent Relations) and gave up doing the Ross report because he said he didn't have enough time. Hell, he even needed time off to plug his cookbook! He's also the one with Bell's Palsy, which has put his announcers position on hold before.

Didn't J.R give up being VP of Talent Relations? I thought he played a big practical joke for his parting shot by resigning Grand Master Sexay. ha ha ha that was a good 'un!
I think JR did give up some of his duties as Johnny Ace took them over.

That does ring a bell, you know. I'm certain he's still got a key backstage role though...

Anyone? :?

Here. From WWE's corporate site;

James W. Ross

Executive Vice President, Business Strategies

Thought so - he's not taken a step back but a step up - a promotion with more responsibilities.

Yeah, Ross is in a totally new role and Ace took over the VP of Talent Relations Job.

As for Lawler, screw him. THIS IS THE ERA OF COACH! I disliked Lawlers commentary before he left, felt Heyman and JR played off each other better due to the sheer hatred and the comedy it brought, so the minute he returned I resigned to knowing that the commentary would be sinking back down the crapper again. You can tell Lawler knows his current standing with the WWE by listening to his commentary on Raw, he tried his hardest to kick up his heel support by trying to yell over Coach and make it seem like he was suddenly "YAY YAY BAD GUYS" when all he done previous weeks was yell about breasts.

JR leaving would be pointless because you've got two colour commentators and no Play by Play man (if you can call what JR does these days Play by Play)

Lawler was gold in the 90s, he hasn't been gold for a long, long time.
