Right, thanks to my wonderful missus I now own this superb management sim... I know there are a fair few other Champ/Football Man heads out there like myself who have no doubt already had this game for a while...

I'm starting out as Rochdale in Football League 2 and I was wondering... Any advice on who to go for, tactics etc...

Also what is your opinion on the latest in the Sports Interactive saga?

I haven't bought it yet, but i'm expecting a lot from it when i do. The '05 version was simply brilliant, with Sega not dropping the level of brilliance at all. The new partnership worked wonders.

First things first - head over to http://www.sigames.com and get the latest patch - Patch 6.0.2 was released on the 19th December.

And be prepared for a long hard stuggle. It's not very fair on players, very hard to get into. I was waiting for this patch to see how things have changed before I started seriously playing it again.

My Adivce to you Gringpo is try the formation of 3 centre defenders, 1 DM a left winger and a Right Winger, 1 AM behind the strikers and 3 strikers. Not sure if it will work for you but it is working a freaking treat with my Juventus team in 05, only lost one match and im at the start of feb:)
After being destroyed game after game on the demo, I decided not to purchase the full game. I don't like losing at the best of times, but when you try different tactic after different formation after different selection, you can't help but give up.

Sorry you are meant to purchase the game and not download the full version with a hack, ok:P

Rochdale report...

7 league games unbeaten, we stand top of our league and all of those fallen giants of English football stand below us, uncertain of when our next crushing attacking blow will fall...

God bless Paul Tait and his young striking glory!

Hows Grant Holt doing, he's a good lower league striker! Lee Trundles amazing too, but his price is a bit prohibitive.....:thumbsup

I can't stand it. FM05 wasn't all that great, but I did get some play from it. From what I've played of FM06, it's gotten even worse. They can add in all the fancy cosmetic features they want like half time team talks or shouting instructions from the dug out, but the actual management side of things lets the game down so badly. CM4 and CM03/04 were a lot more playable and allowed you to use a number of tactics that worked when catering to your own teams strengths. The Football Manager games don't allow that.

Every 3 or 4 weeks your tactics get cracked and you end up needing to change things round again. Is that lifelike? To a certain extent. But the core formation remains the same for just about every team. When was the last time a team drastically changed their formation just for going on a poor run? I don't want to be switching between a 5-3-2 and a 4-3-2-1 a couple of times a month. It's one of the reasons I got sick of FM05 and vowed to have a year or two off from playing management games. When I got a chance to play my pal's copy of FM06 for hours on end, I expected to see some progress in the quality of my team. As it turned out, every game I won was as if I had somehow fluked the victory, even when playing the diddy teams at home. I didn't feel like I was ever in control of a dominating side, I felt as if it would be a toss up from the AI whether I'd get beaten or somehow scrape the win.

If only people still made updates for CM03/04...

I must admit, i still play 02/03 on my Xbox. And its STILL ace!

Holt is doing the business as well... I've brought Townson back off loan as well and he is providing good backup...

Why I haven't these problems yet? I'm four months in and undefeated in the league and so far I've not had much problem with those sides who are outside the playoff zone at all...

The closer clubs have been tighter but still I come out a 2-0 winner most of the time against them...

It's probably just likely we play in very different fashions. What worked for me in previous games doesn't work for me in FM06, what worked for you obviously still does. If you're happy with it, that's fine. I'm not a fan of the changes, and I'll sit this one out.

Have you tried the newer Championship Manager games? The ones since the Sports Interactive split?

At least the FM games pee on them from a great height...

I tend to find also that an attacking 4-4-2 with an attacking and defensive midfielder in the middle of the park works best...

Either that or a 5-3-2 with advanced wingbacks and a man playing just in the hold in front of the two central midfielders... Have two DM and one AM play there with the wing backs providing the width if needed but also you can constrict the game and make it tighter...

My only concern is that players get tired alot easier and quicker as well as injured more in this installment. Fine for Chelsea but not for Dale if you know what I mean...

Apart from the transfers, it's pretty much identical to Fm 2005...

Deigo Marangon, 18 year old Juventude Left Midfielder, GREATEST.PLAYER.EVER.

Normally costs between 1.8 and 2.8 million pounds, but soon becomes worth over 10 million.

I'm currently making a charge for the Champions' League with West Ham. Eddie Johnson (FC Dallas) is a very good signing. 'Tis a bit harder than last year's version but I'm liking the challenge and the new features (i.e the team talks). I agree with Gringo about players tiring too easily though and I'm not a fan of the new training mode. Aside from that, I love it.

I've downloaded the demo, and I've attempted to get the full game but it won't work. Any advice?
I thought you had to download it?

Nah, you buy it from the shops. I downloaded last years illegally though, and it worked fine, until I tried to install the patch for some major errors, and it wouldn't work again.

I'm sure someone has an illegal version again. If anyone does, any chance they could PM me it? Ta.

Its only ÂŖ15 from tecso
I got it for ÂŖ6 off eBay. Im loving it so far. I started out as Newcastle. Was in charge of them for 2 seasons, before I got fired. I finished a respectable 7th and then 9th.
