An important championship in professional wrestling which has been held by individuals whose careers turned a corner once they became champion, some even going on to become the wwf/wwe champion thanks to the push they received from holding the belt first won by Pat Patterson in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 1979.

Who is your favourite intercontinental champion of all time ?

Either Rick Rude, Mr Perfect, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, The Rock, D Lo Brown, Chris Benoit/Jericho/Chyna(it wasn't so much them as Champions more the feud between them over the belt that I liked) or Eddie Guerrero.

I don't have one all time favourite. As the I.C. Belt was my favourite division from the late eighties to late nineties.

DS Edit: Out of order man, watch out or the next one is a cool off.

Out of the champions I've known i'll go for Chris Jericho.

Great in the ring, and always cuts a decent promo. All we need is for him to give up this silly "band" nonsense and come back to the double you double you eeeeee.

When the division actually meant something, guys like The Rock, HHH (or Hunter Hearst Helmsley at the time), Randy Savage, Biritsh Bulldog, HBK, Bret Hart, Rick Rude, Kurt Angle (as the Euro Continental), Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, and others who actually treated the belt as it should have been - a stepping stone to the World Title, although the feuds were generally more entertaining than the "top" ones at the time.

Billy Gun............. I kid. :P

Since this is about my FAVOURITE IC champion and not who I think was the best one then I'll give my honest opinion.

For me it was "Latino Heat" Eddie Guerrero. During his IC title run Eddie had everything that you would want your IC champion to have. He had a great gimmick that consisted of him being the latino lover that would hit on all the chics but later on he found his "Mamacita" in Chyna and became a "loyal" guy. But you knew that wouldn't last long as Eddie was a heel that the fans loved.

Then he had a great set of wrestling matches, one of the most memorable IMO being his ladder match against RVD.

So my favourite IC champion is Eddie G.

IMO Randy Orton was the last REAL IC champ, the IC belt used to be the stepping stone to main event and Orton was the last guy who's IC title reign helped him get over and into the main event, the others have been meaningless

so i'd go for Orton because he was great with it and IMO it was the making of him

I laugh when the Honktonkman proclaims himself the greatest intercontinental champion of all time because he held the belt the longest, great champions should be remembered for the quality of their matches and I don't recall the Elvis wannabe having any memorable (for the right reasons) matches.

the warrior was a very good IC champ in terms of the purpose of the title i.e., a stepping stone to the world title

my favourites were probably savage and michaels

I wouldn't say he was great with it, i mean he hardly defended it in the time he had it. And his best matches at the time weren't IC matches.

The IC championship hasn't been the same since they retired it

I'd agree with Danny Styles, the last guy to use the IC belt as I'm sure it was once intended - to elevate was Orton.

I wouldn't say he was the best but his reign at least had purpose, much like previous reigns of Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage. I'd love to include Mr Perfect into that bracket and I feel that without his injuries he would have then gone onto World gold.

What I do hate is the perrenial IC champions, people such as Chris Jericho, RVD, Edge etc. You can tell these guys when they were holding it weren't going anywhere and were just holding it to give them some kind of status on the card.

well arguably the match that made him a legit main eventer and not just a pretty boy was the hardcore match at backlash 04 vs Foley and that was for the IC belt

if i remember he defended it nearly at every PPV and on alot of Raws

Mr. Perfect, no doubt, he's the greatest Intercontinental Champion the WWE has ever seen, and until i saw otherwise, that'll always be my opinion, and like Christof said, without the Injuries, especially the back injury, he would of been a certain WWE Champion, maybe even WCW Champion.

Randy Orton in late 04 early 05 was great.

Just to correct a mistake, it was Late 03 to mid 04 :) :P

Unfortunately I think that Ken Doane may be a future intercontinental champion despite the fact he is annoying and arrogant.
