Xmas coming up. Money to burn. Possibly on an Xbox 360..a few questions*

Posted

I've search around a few threads but it's not covering everything I need to know.

I have an HDTV in the main living room but in my own room it would be a SDTV; is there anyone actually playing the 360 on a SDTV and could tell me if it's really THAT bad compared to the HD resolution.

Also, to be honest I'm not a HUGE gamer in terms of buying tons of games so what is essential when buying the package?

Is the hardrive REALLY necessary? etc

Also I never really got into the whole 'online gaming' thing apart from Half-Life and Counter Strike; is it worth it to a casual gamer?

Thanks

It's a fair bit murkier on an SDTV but it doesn't really detract from the enjoyability of the game unless you're a graphics monkey. Only problem I've come across so far is the text on Dead Rising is almost illegible.

Best games I've played so far are Condemned, Prey and Dead Rising. I don't think any others I've had - Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Oblivion, Call Of Duty 2 - were really worth the price tag.

I've done OK so far without the hard drive, if you don't download much or have that many games you won't run out of space on the memory stick too often. That said, the Live Arcade line-up looks pretty good these days so I'd go for the HD.

I can imagine Call Of Duty and Prey are good online, I tried PDZ and it was OK (better than the pants single-player) but nothing too spectacular. If you wasn't too impressed with Half-Life of Counter Strike you're not going to be missing too much.

For a casual gamer? I'd go for the Wii. Its cheaper, its got more appeal for non gamers, and people curious to try out "that" controller! You'll save a packet, honestly.

Was checking out the Wii but to be honest the graphics are off-putting. Don't get me wrong I'm not someone who judges a game just by that but they look pretty poor and although the the Wii looks ****loads of fun but I could easily see myself getting bored of it quite rapidly.

To be honest the more I mull it over (in terms of what games I like to play etc) the more I think I should just wait for the PS3.

Im in the exact same position Jono.

Im thinking about buying a 360 tomorrow, but im not sure should i wait for the PS3.

Gears of War for the 360 looks unreal though.

Yeah it really does. Though that 'Resistance' game for the PS3 has a very 'Half-Life' look about it..so I'm hooked, haha

The PS3 will probably be way more expensive aswell, that's kinda of putting me off.

It should be noted that the PS3 UK launch is at least 5 months away. It should also be considered that the 360 has now picked it's pace up and the the real deal next gen games are happening right now. The PS3 will have teething troubles much like the 360 and it certainly looks (going by the Japan and US line-ups) like it's lacking any killer launch titles.
To be honest if I wasn't such a Final Fantasy' fan there wouldn't be much of a discussion.
I'm in the exact same position as The King and Jono. I've always been a Playstation fan boy and have always refused to buy any other console but what's drawing me to the Xbox is it's getting much more recognised in comparison to the Playstation. The 360 now has a decent line up of game titles many of which are on both the PS3 and the 360 so games wise I wouldn't be lost for games on either console. The price of the PS3 is putting me off aswell because I would never have anyone shift that money for a PS3 for me, unless it drops by next christmas i'll probably go for a 360.
I never had the PS2 although I played it often at my friends and later my brother got it. I had the xbox..and a year or so later sold it because apart from awesome multiplayer Halo when completely pissed with my mates it was pretty dire in terms of great titles. But I've seen the 360 definitly has some great games; still would like to see Final Fantasy on it..considering Microsoft got a deal with them.

Im in the exact same boat Kanenite,im leaning towards the 360 aswell.

Final Fantasy is on the 360. I'm not clued up at all on the FF series, so I couldn't tell you what version it is, mind.

It's the bloody (monthly pay) FF11..that practically nobody but nerdy Americans and Asians play..

Square-Enix have a deal with Microsoft though but from what I've seen the PS3 has all the proper titles.

When I saw the trailer and reviews for Gears Of War I think that's what changed my mind.Hopefully I will purchase a 360 today.
