As I often do, last night I popped in my DVD player, the 1992 Royal Rumble match. In my opinion it is among the finest wrestling commentary of all time - 64 unforgettable minutes of Gorilla Monsoon trying to reign in the incomparable Bobby "The Brain" Heenan - who is in the form of his life! Also considering recent news about Bobby, it seems somewhat Ironic that I was enjoying his finest work a day before I heard he was deteriorating in health.

It set me thinking, in other sports there are lines of commentary that we hold particularly evocative and special - so in wrestling, what are yours?

Jim Ross' call of the Mankind/Undertaker Cell Match from King of the Ring 98. JR at his best.

"By god that killed him!!"

Joey Styles: "There has been an outbreak of Technical Wrestling here tonight at the ECW Arena... and New Jack hits Sandman upside the head with a chair and ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD!"

Paul Heyman: "Gore!Gore!!GORE!!!"

Jim Ross: "TYSON AND AUSTIN, TYSON AND AUSTIN!!!"

Jim Ross: "If I live to be 100 I will never understand why they keep so many damn weapons under the ring, It's like they want the wrestlers to use them on each other..."

Dusty Rhodes: "Go get 'im, daddy..."

Bobby Heenan: "Yeah; but who's side is he on?"

The 92 Rumble is one of my favourite examples of commentary (It's also a great show for playing "Dead wrestler bingo").

Jesse Ventura on WM3 is also incredible. If commentators were more like him then I'd watch more wrestling.

I'm going to close this thread with..

Vito vs Sylvan - Smackdown 2006

JBL:

"Miiiichael, here's your boyyyyfriend!"

"The next Mr Cole"

"I just got back from Iraq, I wish I had some kind of explosives, I'd blow the ring up, blow them to freak heaven, and the wrestling world would be seriously better!"

"Last week you were rolling around the floor together, kissing each other!...What if your parents saw that?"

"By osmosis I have become more feminine just by sitting next to you"

"Stop the match due to lack of testosterone!"

Cole: You gotta admit its a nice dress Vito's wear-

JBL: NO I DONT!

Cole: I think you have a secret fetish, you're really into the whole Vito thing.

Cole: Part of me is really hoping that Vito was just having fun last week.

JBL: And part of you is hoping he calls you tonight.

I've lost the link to the match, but its the greatest thing in the history of history.

Ventura @ WMV: "Gorilla, this truley is what the term 'Main Event' is all about!"
Dusty Rhodes: "Go get 'im, daddy..."

Bobby Heenan: "Yeah; but who's side is he on?"

200% agree, this is most iconic call in history for the best event in the history of wrestling IMO as heenan's gimmick never like hogan either as a face or as a heel. Its pure class

Funny, any time I watch that moment I laugh at how utterly retarded it was for them to spoil the most shocking heel turn in the history of history. But thats just me.

More like Heenan screwed it up and since then every time its shown, his stupid call is edited out.

I remember Rhodes saying "What are you talking about?!" with a very shakey voice as if to say well done Bobby, you just gave it away!

i thought it was in keeping with is gimmick that he didn't trust hogan, it may have been a mistake but i think it did add something to the event, because fans would agree with dusty and think heenan was talking crap as normal and then when it is shown to be true OMG heenan was right i think it worked, and did work well as shown by what happened after that, hogans turn wasn't ruin one bit by that

It didnt work at all. It was probably the most retarded call in wrestling history, it was just unbelievably stupid on every single level. Obviously whoever is in charge these days agrees as its always edited out when that footage is shown now.

I cant see any legitimate argument for saying it was good or positive in any way. It was ridiculous, obviously Heenan wasnt informed ahead of time because if he was he wouldnt have said it I'm sure.

that was the point it was a natural call for his gimmick and yet they play that on most of the wcw videos i have seen that show hogans turn it was an inconic call, maybe not at the time but certianly after that

Yeah, they play it on old WCW videos, because as with most things, WCW didnt have a clue!

An iconic call in the respect that its seen as unbelievably stupid, sure, but it wasnt a good piece of commentary at all.

I'm willing to bet you 99% of people look back on that and think "Man, that was stupid!" because it was.

Speaking of iconic commentary..

Dusty: Dere is a laydee! Dere is a laydee in da men's bathroom!

Gorilla Monsoon, Hogan vs Andre at Wrestlemania 3:

"The irresistable force meets the immovable object"

Monsoon (WMVI): "He has taken one giant step towards IMMORTALITY!" (said after Hogan hands the WWF Title to The Ultimate Warrior)
Even Jesse put Hogan over at WMVI. Shocking. I guess he just hated Warrior more.

Vince McMahon at WMXII:

The boy whose dream has come true for Shawn Michaels. - Iconic if not grammatically correct.

I can't remember who it was (I think it was Dusty), or at what match but in a Rey Mysterio match in WCW, which is on his Biggest Little Man dvd, someone says "He's so tired, he can't even grow hair". :lol

I thought that was awesomly hilarious.

J.R- Lita is jerking Edge off....the ladder (yes I'm very immature)

Ventura-He's an idiot (after the Warrior gets elimanated from a Royal Rumble)

Hennan-Jannetty tried to to dive through the window to escape! Did you see that? What an act of cowardism!(after Michaels turns on Jannetty)
