Heath Ledger's haunting Joker has been voted as the second greatest movie character of all time behind Indiana Jones, in a new poll.

Out on Wednesday in Empire Magazine, the list of the top 100 characters sees Darth Vader, Captain Jack Sparrow and Hannibal Lecter round out the top five.

Empire Editor Rod Yates said it was no surprise that Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, took the top spot, but said the late Ledger's Joker in the Dark Knight was also impressive.

More than 80 per cent who voted for the Joker chose Ledger's interpretation over Jack Nicholson's, the magazine said,

It defining moment was: "Ledger's Joker taunting Batman in the interrogation room - You're just a freak like me".

"A fitting tribute to a much-missed actor," Yates said.

Star Wars movies had the most characters in the list.

Seventeen per cent of characters are psychos while seven per cent are cops.

The special edition of Empire features all the 100 characters on the cover.

I hope that it was SSK who added which films they appeared in because if he didn't then Empire magazine must think idiots read there magazine (please note i am not trying to imply that anyone who does is an idiot. Mostly because I read it from time to time :lol)

But being honest if anyone didn't know that Norman Bates is from Psycho then are a toddler :lol

They do a lot of lists, Empire, don't they? I think they're just frustrated telephone directory writers meself.

Oh i understand the amount of lists however i am saying from looking at the list they have put the title next to the film for the ones which has i said everyone who has any knowledge of movies.

Harry Potter > John McClane? Empire smoke some wacky crack, that's for sure. And The Joker's high placing is no doubt due to how recently TDK was released.

Not at all, man. Ledger made sweet, sweet love to the Joker. His performance has already thrown Nicholson's lauded performance way off into the shadows.

Harry Potter has no business at 15. The movies aren't remotely as classy as the books, and even then, I've never felt as though HP characters are powerful. It was how they worked off of each other

Yeah. I mean Daniel Radcliffe has nailed Harry Potter as best can be, but in terms of the greatest movie characters ever, no dice. Its almost as if HP are successful movies so they have to have the main character in the list by default.

Harry would be much higher as a book character.

Show me a magazine that don't do lists.

As I asked in the "500 Movies" thread, surely, if that was the case, characters from other movies recently released would be in the list also?

By "recently released" people mean "recently released and masturbated over time and time again", which you well know. I'm not saying it wont be good in its own right in retrospect, but right now its recently released, in the spotlight, and has been absolutely raved about by everyone and their dog, hence the huge props its getting.
