A list of almost 70 comic-book/graphic novel adaptations in the works at the moment
Total Film's current issue has a nice, thirty-page, feature on the comic-book adaptations that are currently in either pre-production, shooting, post-production or on general release at the moment.
Here is the list of all SEVENTY movies and how excited Total Film is about them (with the ones in bold being movies I'm excited about seeing)...
Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery
Akira
Ant-Man - Edgar Wright directing.
Atlantis Rising
The Avengers - Marvel's ultimate dream becoming a reality. Finally, with the company owning the movie rights to their own characters, the can (and will) cross-pollinate the world the films are set so that all the characters (eventually) will exist with each other. So far, Captain America, Iron Man and The Hulk all co-exist in the same universe and it has the fanboys drooling at the prospect. This amalgamation is going to be the fruits of that labour as Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk and (possibly) Giant Man join forces. The best news is that all the characters are (scheduled) to be played by the actors currently inhabiting the roles.
Baltimore, or the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire
Battling Boy
The Boys
Cowboys & Aliens - Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg producing.
The Crow - See the other thread for more details on this.
The Darkness - Comic originally co-written by Garth Ennis.
Deadpool - Ryan Reynolds should be a lock for the stand alone movie and, with regards to Hugh Jackman's comments about how excited he is with the Deadpool character in the 'Wolverine' movie, that should be all you need to know.
Death: The High Cost of Living - Neil Gaimen is directing and Guillermo Del Toro is producing this spin-off from the Sandman series of comics.
Doctor Strange - It's another Marvel mainstay and, at the moment, the studio can do no wrong.
Dragonball Evolution
Elfquest
Fables
Fathom
The First Avenger: Captain America - It's Captain America and it's set in World War II. What's not to love?
Freaks of the Heartland
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra - Directed by Stephen Sommers ('The Mummy') and starring an awesome list of actors (Channing Tatum, Christopher Eccleston, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lee Byung-hun), this has got a lot of people excited... and not just because both Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols have never looked hotter. The action looks to be in line with the tone of the comics and Ray Park automatically adds "cool" to any movie.
The Goon
Green Arrow - One of the darkest stories in the DC Universe, written by David S. Goyer, sees Green Arrow imprisoned inside the Super Max facility; a prison where the layout is changing all the time to stop the super-villains housed within from escaping. The prison will, according to the writer, be populated with a host of (B and C-level) DC villains.
Green Hornet - Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow are playing The Hornet and Kato respectively... that is all the reason you need to want to see this movie.
Green Lantern - Hal Jordan comes to life (in the mooted guise of Ryan Gosling) to face off against (alledgedly) Legion. Other characters said to be making an appearance are Abin Sur, Kilowog, Sinestro and Carol Ferris.
Hack/Slash
Hard Boiled - The comic was written by Frank Miller and he is in charge of writing and directing the movie version as well. The plot? An insurance investigator discovers he's actually a homicidal cyborg and then goes on a bloody rampage.
Heavy Metal - I loved the Heavy Metal comics when I was younger (my dad had them), so I'm looking forward to this, a collaboration of different tales directed by the likes of David Fincher, Kevin Eastman, Zach Snyder, Guillermo Del Toro and Gore Verbinski. Scantily-clad female warriors directed by the guys behind 'Hellboy', 'Seven', 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and '300' is enough to get anyboy excited.
Hiding in Time
Hybrid
Iron Man 2 - Promising more action, a darker story, War Machine AND Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer) teaming up with Mickey Rourke (either Whiplash or Crimson Dynamo) as the villains, this has the potential to rock harder than the brilliant original managed.
Jonah Hex
Judge Dredd - For me, Stallone was born to play Dredd and, until he removed his helmet, was actually as close to the character as you could hope to get. It also didn't hurt that Diane Lane was mega-hot. The new version is being made by the people behind '28 Days Later', so this should get it right. Oh, and with the Judge Death being mentioned as the villain, things should also be a lot more brutal too.
Justice League - If the legal wrangling can be resolved, this could be the shot in the arm DC's Universe needs to get back on the tail of Marvel.
Kick Ass - McLovin' as a superhero is reason enough to want to see this, but there are so many great reasons why this should be a barnstorming film, I can't list them all here. Google the title (carefully) and read up on what could be the sleeper hit of 2009.
The Killer
Locke & Key
The Losers
Ness: - David Fincher is directing this tale of Elliot Ness and his life after he's busted Al Capone. This time, the detective is on the trail of the "Torso Murderer".
The Night Projectionist
The Phantom Legacy
Preacher - Sam Mendes is down to direct (altough not 100% confirmed as of yet) in this epic tale of Jesse Custer, a preacher (hence the title) who is bonded with the power of Genesis (a creature born of the union between an angel and a demon - thus a being of both pure evil and pure good) and, as such, is as powerful, if not more so, than God himself. Custer, with this new-found power, then hunts down God to make The Almighty answer for his sins.
Priest
The Punisher: War Zone - Already on release, the more I see of this one, the more I get excited about where it may be heading. Using Jigsaw as the main villain was a masterstroke.
Ronin
Runaways - The story of a group of teenagers who discover their parents are supervillains and run away, hoping to make amends for the misdeeds of the past.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Sgt. Rock
Sin City 2 - Based on the 'A Dame To Kill For' and 'Booze, Broads & Bullets' stories, the script has, according to Frank Miller, already been written and should begin shooting in April.
Sleeper
Spider-Man 4 - Raimi and Maguire are both back on board and the rumours are that both The Lizard and Morbius will feature in some capacity.
Superman: Man of Steel - With no director attached, this is still a long way off, but with the last movie doing ok, but nothing major, it will probably ignore what happened in 'Superman Returns' and start again. Mark Millar (writer of Wanted and a host of Marvel comics, as well as a someone I knew growing up in Airdrie) has written a three-movie script that begins 1,000yrs ago on Krypton and ends with Superman the only being alive on Earth at the end of our Sun's life arrives and it goes from yellow to red before starting to supernova, losing his powers and finally dying for good (cheery, lol). Also mooted is a real villain for him to get his hands on in the shape of either Darkseid, Braniac, Doomsday or Zod.
Surrogates
Thor - Choosing Kenneth Branagh to direct a comic-book translation was a left-field decision, but one that has already paid off with Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Thor is also one of the trickier characters to introduce into the Marvel (movie) Universe due to his origin as a Norse god. I have no worries, though, that the translation will work out well.
Tintin
Villains - A man discovers his elderly neighbour is an infamous supervillain and, rather than contacting the cops (or a superhero), decided to blackmail the guy into teaching him the ways of the supervillain instead.
Virulents
War Heroes
Watchmen - See the thread for more details.
WE3
Whiteout
Wonder Woman - Many different actresses have been mentioned for the title role... and just as many scripts have been written and then rejected. Whatever way they do it, the skimpy costume will need the right body to fill it. May I suggest Scarlett Johansson for the role?
X-Men: First Class - Reportedly not a movie focused on the youngsters at Xavier's school already seen in the first three movies, but a prequel showing how Jean Grey, Beast, Cyclops, etc first arrived and became the X-Men. It'll be interesting to see how faithful they stay to the comics, especially as, in the original timeline, Iceman was one of the original group. Another interesting aspect of this is that it would be the first X-Men movie/spin-off to not feature Wolverine. Will that have an impact?
X-Men Origins: Magneto - The second "Origins" story, based in Magneto's youth, his time spent in a Nazi concentration camp (the reason he doesn't want mutants categorised in the "present") during World War II and his relationship with Charles Xavier.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - See the thread devoted to the movie to find out why this is going to rock... and rock hard.
Y: The Last Man - The tale of Yorick and his monkey, the last males left alive on the planet after "something" causes ALL other male mammals on the planet to die at the same time. This makes him something of a commodity to the women-folk as they realise he is the only thing standing between the human race and eventual extinction.
That, my friends, is a lot of movies to work through, but hopefully they'll all hit the mark.

Not actually seventy movies...
