As in-ring workers only. Who is better?

I've seen this debate going on in recent times at various places around the internet, covering the full spectrum of opinion from the DVDVRish corner of the world where Cena wins by a landslide, to the piece on the front page of the WO reflecting the more commonly-held view that Cena "by no means should ever be compared to Angle in terms of his in-ring ability."

So I want to find out where TWO stands. Who is better in the ring, Angle or Cena?

I'm interested in the debate too. Why do you prefer one or the other? How do their best or worst matches, feuds, attributes compare?

Is this a ridiculous question because Cena sucks and Angle is great? Have we as a board experienced the Angle "backlash" enough to make this a contest? How do we really view Cena now?

To me I think Cena is much more consistent where as Angle has had much, much better matches than Cena's best but also has had (and continues to have) really poor matches. So if you want to say who is the better worker based on their best work then it's Kurt easily, if it's on how consistently someone puts on good matches then I think you have to tip your hat to Cena and say that regardless of any cynicism you have on him being the golden child in WWE the reason he stays that way is that he rarely disappoints.
Angle no doubt in my mind, better matches more naturally gifted

I thought this was a joke question.

Cena matches are boring and whilst I prefer Angle heel matches over Angle's face matches, it's stil better than Cena's matches.

And this aint a dig at Cena, some wrestlers just aren't as talented in the ring as others.

I'd much prefer to watch an Angle match. Cena's are always very well structured and they cover his weaknesses well but I hate the way he does so much. People will no doubt talk about psychology in this thread, probably critiquing the no selling sequences in Angle's matches, and the absolute basic rule of psychology is to provide realism. Cena fails to provide that from the very first minute. His strikes look really awful and every single move he does looks safe. There is never any 'snap' in what Cena does, all his moves are floaty and soft, to the point where I just can't get into what he's doing. Cena is good at selling and he understands psychology but his work all looks so fake and choreographed that I just don't enjoy it. If Cena could punch like Dick Murdoch or Jerry Lawler, he'd be perfectly fine but he's not even capable of doing that. He is about as unathletic as anyone in the company with the exception of Vince McMahon. And I include Khali in that.

Angle is perfectly fine and people go way overboard in the criticism of his work. His big matches tend to have a few too many sequences but he's one of the few wrestlers around today who I could watch a lot of and not get bored.

:lol

I feel pretty safe in saying that I like Khali more than anyone else on this board. But you are going to have to show your working on that one. Khali cant walk.

I'm not really that high on either, but I'd have to give it to Angle. He interests me, all be it slightly, more than Cena who I tend to find a bit formulaic.

I'd have to give Angle the edge in actual competence of performing movez as well. Cena's running bulldog is still fresh in my mind :lol

Plus, Angle's desire to kill himself with dodgy spots is always fun.

Is there actually any point in arguing between who is better?
:lol

I was just kidding with that. Cena is unathletic though. He's strong, yeah, but everything he does looks awkward.

I was seriously hoping so. I mean, even I am perfectly willing to accept "Cena is physically awkward" as a valid point, its not something that one needs hyperbole to get across.

The thing with something like that is whether you're willing to accept/ignore it, really. The same way that, say, Rock has goofy physical mannerisms too, but people dont care because he's The Rock and it doesnt matter. Cena's physicality doesnt bother me at all, because he's John Cena and it doesnt matter. But I absolutely understand why it bothers other people.

I've never really been able to notice "in ring ability" to a great extent. I mean, I can point out the really bad ones (Hogan, Bagwell, Nash, Khali, Clay, and Sin Cara) and I can point out the obviously great ones (Bret, Owen, Michaels, Steamboat, and in my opinion...X-PAC). I can also notice the people who aren't really talented in the ring but still give me entertainment (Jeff Hardy and Goldberg). But, I've always had trouble making an order. For instance, I couldn't tell you who is better in the ring between Edge and Christian, but I like Edges move set a lot more, so I would go with Edge.

So, thats what I'm gonna go with here, I'll take Angle.

A wrestlers punching ability actually may be one of the most important aspects of me liking a wrestler. I've always thought Austin and Rock could have a match where they did nothing but punch, and it would be entertaining.

Define worker for me Jimmy? In ring stuff only or everything that goes with being a superstar?

Not a particular fan of either, but, between the two, Cena. In the ring that is. Most of Cena's unwatchable, company killing naff-ness comes from his promos and his gimmick and his insanely punchable face, his matches are often pretty good.

Angle matches, on the other hand, are what happens when you play Smackdown vs RAW and change the settings to where everyone gets unlimited finishers from the start, expect with extra 2.9 count kick outs for no explicit reason.

Yeah, I can tell you stopped watching wrestling on a regular basis, John.

I've seen most of Cena's recent pay-per-view matches, and he hasn't bothered me in any of them. SummerSlam was okay, the Lesnar match was excellent (except for the finish, which was nothing to do with Cena), WrestleMania was fine, his match with Punk might have been the best mainstream North American match of the decade, his Last Man Standing with Umaga was a contender for best match in North America post-Attitude Era at the time. Everything about Cena that's terrible is on the mic, in his facials, in his gimmick, how he's booked, or the fact he was to work with obese wastes of space like the Big Show. His matches are consistently above average.

And what's Kurt done that's any better? Kicked out of 87 finishers per match and mastered how to do the close kick out to absolutely no effect. Whoopee. Kurt Angle is the emperor's new clothes of wrestling, the messiah of TNA fan boy-ism, the poster boy of that horrible YouTube-smark OMGMOVEZ~ attitude to wrestling and pretty much nothing else.

Kurt Angle is one of the greatest wrestlers to have ever lived, and Cena is an embarrasment. It's really no question.

I'm no Cena fan but off the top of my head I can think of some specific great matches with Punk (of course), Rey and D Bryan, and not many points where he's been a let down, and the last really good matches that come to mind from Angle are with Nigel McGuinness and Anderson, which was ages ago, and that it's really annoying how finishers are just another move in his matches.

I'd definitely prefer to watch a Cena match, so I guess I vote for him! (if that's how this poll works)

Angle is clearly a better worker. I actually like Angle less than Cena and don't make any real effort to see him now he's in TNA, but he's got the edge over Cena in just about every way but the ones that matter to WWE.
