How do you solve a problem like Punk-Ryback?

We are four days away from HIAC and the finish to this match has been agonised over for weeks now.

You are Vince. How on earth DO you book the Punk-Ryback match?

Who can afford to lose more? Who needs to win? Do you continue the Punk reign? Do you give Ryback a short reign? Do you start thinking about how this affects Rumble and Mania plans?

Or are we all just overthinking this and this is just to tide Punk over until Cena is ready for another match?

What is the finish? Does someone interfere? Does Brock? Does Cena?

What would YOU do?

I'd let Punk pop the 365 mark before dropping the belt, but I'd have him put Ryback over strongly in the match, maybe a flukey win, then have Ryback earn another shot on TV, win the belt and drop it at the Rumble to whoever is facing Punk at WM, while Punk wins the Rumble.

At EC have a No1 Contenders Chamber to determine who is next in line after WM. Ryback gets his rumble rematch (non-chamber) @ EC, but loses via interference to whoever won the chamber (establishing dominance before his shot/ mind games), Punk gets "taken out" backstage before EC, by the same guy.

Wm Matches

Punk vs Champ

Ryback vs Chamber winner for No1 contender status.

Builtin feuds coming out of that are any combinations of Ryback/Punk/Chamber Winner/Champ, which also sets up MITB later in the year, as well as any Fatal Fourways, Triple Threats, or Scrambles they might want to throw in.

Have Ryback assaulted by a mystery person, from behind with a weapon backstage so it looks like he has zero chance of starting the match. Have him overcome his injuries and actually wrestle, only to lose after putting up heck of a fight.

Once Ryback loses, thats it, you realize this? Its over for him, he'll be just another bloke who loses matches. Like I said already, they are booked into a corner and the only option really, if you dont want to kill any popularity this guy has, is to have him wipe Punk out and just give him the mega push to the moon and hope he has the talent (which he doesnt) to pull it off. Give him the belt and have him work with top talents in hopes something rubs off on him.

Punk losing will wreck their long term plans of having him work the Rock for the belt at the Rumble, but who cares? Punk isnt doing anything for business, regardless of how great people love to say he is, nobody cares about him because he cant draw for shit, so get rid of him on top and try something new, may as well, nows as good a time as any.

Main flaw with this is it means putting Ryback in against The Rock for the title at the Rumble. I can't see many people buying into that. I honestly think that kind of match could do more harm to Ryback than good.

I still think Ryback's a Paul Heyman guy.

The only way I can see WWE getting what they want is by having Punk escape the cell and just to leg it out of the arena.

A really cool scenario I'd look into doing would be for Punk to try and escape up the ramp only for Cena to appear trying to block him. Then Brock or other Heyman guys attack Cena and escort Punk out of the arena.

WWE have put themselves in a no win situation with Punk Vs Ryback HIAC. If the PPV was next month they could've had a shi**y DQ/Count out finish and prolonged it for another month, but with that stipulation non existant at HIAC, they will have to decide. End Punk's title reign or end Ryback's undefeated streak. I think in the long run, ending Punk's title run would be less harmful.

Punk's reign has already been an incredible achievement already, but if they destroy Ryback's unbeaten streak, then that would seriously damage any momentum they have built for him in the last few months. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Chris Jericho's tu'pence.

Chris Jericho on why he thinks Ryback should win on Sunday: “I don’t know anything and I don’t work for the WWE. I haven’t talked to Vince in about a month. But I personally think and this is something that obviously Busted Open Radio has very hardcore wrestling fans who are listening as we all are. The number one thing people bitch about is that there is nothing new and it’s the same old same old with John Cena. This is the chance to create a new guy. This is the chance to make a new star instantly, and I know tradition says you must build a star. There is no tradition in a case like this. The comparisons are to Goldberg. Most of the fans in this day and age have no idea who Goldberg is and don’t care. We do, but in the year 2012 Goldberg was over ten years ago. How did Goldberg get over? …. By beating everybody. There was no loss for Goldberg. As soon as he did lose, that’s when things started going downhill for him. Ryback is not a normal guy. This is not a guy that we see that builds his way to the top and fans get behind him slowly but surely. You want to pick a new guy? Have him beat CM Punk this week. Who gives a sh** about Punk’s title reign? It means nothing. Here is a chance to take a guy who people are getting behind. If he beats Punk at Hell in A Cell and after three hundred and thirty seven days or whatever and Punk is finally beaten, people are going to start to take notice of this guy. Those who don’t watch Raw are going to tune in to see what’s going on. Ryback beats everybody. Ryback faces Rock at Royal Rumble. What happens if a couple of weeks before that something goes on with Ryback and Undertaker got involved in the Rock match? What if Rock wins the title and goes on to face Cena we expected and what if its Ryback vs Undertaker at Wrestlemania? What if Ryback beats Undertaker at Wrestlemania? You have a new star for the next ten years to headline pay-per views and main events.”

Has CM Punk gone as far as he can go as a character? : “He has gone as far as he can go. The Rock is the Rock. He comes from a different era. Undertaker, Steve Austin, that comes from a different era. Nobody will ever be a bigger star than those guys, because people in their heads…It’s like the old Batman TV show when we were kids. We thought it was the greatest show ever. You watch it back now and it sucks. But it has a certain place in your head that it will never be replaced. The band KISS in 1978 if you’re old enough to remember was thought of as the greatest band ever, even if they weren’t. Rock is a guy unto his own. Punk is as big of a star as he can be as a heel in WWE. Beating Ryback doesn’t make him a bigger star. It doesn’t.”

Can the injury to John Cena be a blessing in disguise?: “It is a blessing in disguise. The biggest breaks I ever got in this business was when someone got hurt, or when someone went to make a movie. I won the undisputed championship because Triple H was hurt and Rock was leaving. Cena got hurt. What do we do? One thing about Vince McMahon is his motto is to take a negative and turn it into a positive. Vince knows how rare it is for someone to get over so quickly. Vince knows Ryback is not a money making star right now. But if he goes into Hell In A Cell and he destroys Punk and beats him, a hundred percent those fans are going to go bananas for Ryback. You have created a new star. Punk can come back the next night and bitch and complain and do what a heel does. Heels aren’t built to win. Heels are built to lose. That’s what heels do. The fact that Punk has held the title for three hundred and thirty seven days, it might mean something to you guys. I can tell you Punk doesn’t care. Punk wants to make money and if that means Punk and Ryback becomes the hottest feud and suddenly something happens where it goes to Ryback and Rock, that’s a match where suddenly you made a new guy. I would love to see Punk and Rock and I’m sure Punk would be disappointed if it didn’t work out. But this is business. If you have a chance to build someone that can put a company on his back, then you do it. The stop and start pushes that the WWE has been doing and infamous for the last ten years has got to stop and this is the perfect time for it.”

Does he think the WWE will pull the trigger and have Ryback become champion?: “I do because of the reasons I’ve talked about. I’m not saying I know anything. I could be completely wrong. Maybe there would be a scenario where they can protect Ryback and still have Punk as champ. But for me what I like as a wrestling fan, when I was a kid, what I like as wrestling fan now even after doing it for 22 years is the element of surprise. I hate the same old same old. I worked in WCW for three years when guys were passed over. As hard as it is to believe at this point, Eddie Guerrero was the top heel in the company at certain points, but they never let him beat anybody. Billy Kidman was super popular. Probably one of the top two or three babyfaces in the company at certain points, but they never pushed him over the edge. There are guys for whatever reason, get over, even when they are not supposed to get over. If you take advantage of that and push it over the cliff, people will get behind it especially a guy like Ryback because we haven’t seen anyone like that in a long time. We haven’t seen a powerhouse come in and annihilate people. The last time might have been Batista but Ryback is more Neanderthal, more animalistic, more a beast. Batista is very well spoken. Ryback does remind me of Goldberg and like I said it’s not a copy of Goldberg. It’s like saying Jericho is a copy of Shawn Michaels. There are elements and lots of similarities but it’s a different guy and nobody has seen a guy like this in a long, long time. So I think if they do pull the trigger that it will work huge and it will create a superstar instantly. Someone that will be a money drawer, someone that people will tune in who are not watching now to see.”

Chris Jericho via Twitter:

Let me clarify- @cmpunk is already a money drawing, ratings drawing, MASSIVE star. @Ryback22 is not. But a big win on Sun can make him one.

I pretty much agree, people on here might like to ride Ryback as talentless but the guy seems to be over with the crowds. Punk's length of title reign means nothing except to smarks who want him to be champ longer than cena simply for that reason alone. It'll do nothing to Punk if he dropped the belt to Ryback and there's a chance to make something from the good heat Ryback has generated. He's never going to hold the title through until Mania so what they do in future is less important really. Ryback wins, a small section of the IWC sh*t their pants and the world keeps turning. Nothing to see here.

The counter argument to that is already made by Jericho himself :

There was no loss for Goldberg. As soon as he did lose, that’s when things started going downhill for him. Ryback is not a normal guy.

So he's proposing Ryback go over, and then lose.... which negates any rub he got by going over in the first place.

No, if Ryback wins, he has to have at least six months not just retaining but flattening his opponents, or it's pointless putting him over at all.

Jericho isnt proposing that he lose. Jericho is proposing that he wins, keeps the title, beats Rock at Rumble and Taker at Mania.

Which would get you to six months, as it happens.

That would be awful what a waste of Rock and taker, I can't see the Goldberg rip lasting that long its like trying to capture lightening twice it doesn't happen

I honestly don't see Ryback as like Goldberg, just different beasts. Goldberg was an animal, Ryback is a monster. They may have similarities but they aren't being portrayed anywhere near the same. I understand he's on a streak but I haven't seen that streak being brought up by the commentators or WWE at all. There's no "25 - 0" signs in the crowd, even the catchphrases whilst superficially similar are different. Who's Next implies who ever is next is going to be bigger and badder than the last, Feed Me More simply means he wants to kick anyone's ass.

There are similarities to Goldberg, I mean that cant really be denied. He isnt a Goldberg rip off or a Goldberg clone like some are saying, but there are similarities and of course he will be compared to Goldberg.

Yeah I think people just use the comparison as shorthand for "I dont like him" because its just easier to call someone an "X ripoff". Like how there's a lot of "Hogan ripoff" from Cena haters, and so forth. Its only ever used as an insult.

There are similarities, but there are always similarities. There are only so many character types to work with, and the same traits are repeated usually because they are proven to work. Big asskicking dude works. And Goldberg didnt exactly invent being a big asskicking dude.

Simply put: WWE you f**ked up.

I'm have two plans.

Plan #1: In the match this Sunday Punk try to escape with Ryback in hot pursuit. At the top of the Lensar comes out and lays Ryback out with a huge clothesline and maybe a F5. Punk escapes champ.and Ryback keeps some credibility. All December its "Feed Me lensar" chants. And Ryback/Lensar is booked at the rumble; it will be a streak vs career match. Ryback go over. Punk Rock I dont care who wins but the winner will face John Cena one-on-one at Elimination Chamber and the Raw elimination chamber will be for a title shot at Wrestlemania and the loser of the Royal Rumble match will win that. Ryback and Taker can fight only if taker wants to and I'll have Ryback go over.

Plan 2#: Same thing punk try to escape but this time The 3 Man Band are Heyman Guys. Ryback fights them off but Punk.makes it out the building. At the December PPV (if there's one) gauntlet match with Ryback vs the 3 man Band. Ryback wins easily. H goes to the Rumble the 1st entrant and wins still undefeated. Face Punk again at Wrestlemania who lost at Royal Rumble to Rock but won it back at Elmonation Chamber because Brock Lensar got in when someone was eliminated. So The rock.vs Lensar and Ryback vs Punk at Wrestlemania. With Ryback and Rock winning.

That's the only ways I can think of Ryback staying over but giving him time before a run with the major.belt.

I dont think Ryback should sully himself with Jinder Mahal.

Frankly Drew Mac should not be sullying himself with the presence of Jinder Mahal. But these are cruel, cold times we live in.

Actually I wouldnt mind if Ryback beat the crap out of Jinder. Much like a cockroach, the only good Jinder is a completely squashed Jinder.
