Biggest MMA Upsets

Two questions, the first is pretty obvious; After what we (well, some of us :P) saw last night, what do you think is the biggest upset in MMA history? Is it Chris Weidman knocking out Anderson Silva mid-taunt, Fabricio Werdum submitting Fedor Emelianenko after being fired from the UFC, Matt Serra TKOing Georges St-Pierre at the age of 33, or another less cliched answer?

 

Personally, I'm going with Serra. Whilst all three were shocking, Weidman/Silva and Werdum/Fedor were about young guys beating old guys who were past their best, maybe a little chinny, and had one eye on retirement, where as Serra/GSP was an old guy, fighting a kid in his absolute prime, and f*cking him up for not taking him seriously.

 

And, secondly, who do you think has had the best comeback from an upset? When Werdum beat Fedor, we saw Fedor fall apart, and he's lost every fight he's had in America since. When Serra beat GSP it terrified GSP into never attempting to finish a fight again, and now we all know exactly how all his fights are going to end. On the other hand, when Chael Sonnen almost upset Anderson Silva, Silva responded by becoming a monster, demolishing Belfort, Okami, Sonnen and Bonnar with ease and a sense of showmanship (that said, he didn't actually lose to Sonnen, so it doesn't count).

 

So, yeah, what's the most shocking upset in MMA history, and who's had the best post-upset comeback?

I think Bigfoot brutally smashing the living shit out of Overeem needs a mention. That shocked me just the way he did it.

I think to this day the greatest MMA upset was Ian Freeman TKO'ing Frank Mir, even though the UFC was still substantially less significant at the time seeing Frank Mir get beat by a British guy with a less than stellar record in MMA, let alone the UFC at a a time where Frank Mir was seen as an unstoppable monster is still in my eyes at least the greatest upset, especially considering the fact that it was before his motorcycle accident which stalled his career a great deal.

I'd say the best comeback (at least in recent memory) was Cain over JDS. Although, Brock's comeback after losing to Frank Mir, especially in their rematch, was pretty special.

Oh and with regards to the comebacks after being beaten, I would probably say off the top of my head GSP's comeback from losing to Matt Serra, If not for how impressive he was, he made Koscheck look poor and we all have seen him win and win and win, even if he is boring to watch he still wins.

 

After that I liked seeing Mark Hunts comeback from his string of defeats I mean it didn't culminate with the magic hollywood ending but he still came back and beat 3 decent heavyweights (and Chris Tuchsherer) which, after his run was a really impressive comeback.

 

I'm liking what Chad Mendes is doing too, he decisioned his way to a title shot got KO'd by Aldo and from that he's finished 3 straight fights, his last against a decent guy in Darren Elkins. One or two more decent wins and I think he gets a rematch.

 

Finally I like Kenny Florians comebacks, from losing the first Ultimate Finale to Diego Sanchez, he went on to get a title shot and lost to Sherk but then fought his way back up again, then again at featherweight, he may have never managed to win the big one but he always picked himself up dusted himself off and got back into contention In two of the most competitive divisions.

Gonzaga KTFO with a HEADKICK on Crocop had me literally jump out of my skin and scream "Oh shit"

Can't believe I didn't mention Crocop/Gonzaga. That fight was supposed to just be a introduction of Crocop to UFC fans before his title shot, and he ends up losing to his own signature move, an incredible moment.
