Posted June 14, 201410 yr Right!! Lets settle this once and for all, which was the best console and why? For me it was the Megadrive, I thought it had better games, a better controller, looked cooler and just a better console all round.
June 14, 201410 yr SNES for me. Most of the games were cross platform that I liked and the ones that weren't (Mario/Sonic) I preferred on Nintendo. Mario over Sonic any day of the week. I preferred the SNES controller but thought the Mego Drive console looked better, the MD controller gave me massssssive blisters on my thumbs from button mashing on Wrestle War though. I preferred the layout on the SNES pad. So yeah, SNES for me without question. Not because it was better, they were both equally as powerful at the time. Although the Graphic FX chip or whatever it was called in the SNES made Star Fox etc look great!
June 14, 201410 yr SNES every time. Super Mario Allstars will always defeat Sonic for me. It was also my first every console so it wall always hold a special place in my heart.
June 14, 201410 yr Megadrive for me, SNES had some of the greatest games ever in the Zelda series and the mario franchise was generally great but I think the library doesn't stand up against the Megadrives. Sure, in places the graphics weren't as great but I preferred the megadrives synth sounds to snes midi sounds and as I said the megadrive brought you games like the desert strike series and road rash, innovative games that you just didn't see pop up on the SNES.

I was just about to come in and say the same kind of thing. I loved my SNES for the quality of the games (Mario, Zelda, Unirally, Starfox, Killer Instinct), but I loved my Megadrive for the sheer quantity of games (2 Crude Dudes, Road Rash, ToeJam & Earl, Kid Chameleon, Skitchin', MicroMachines WITH the J-Cart, Sonic). Even some of the cross platform games just seemed better on the Megadrive. The Megadrive versions of games like Aladdin, Earthworm Jim and Cool Spot were better than the SNES versions (to me at least). So yeah, I guess my answer is SNES for quality, Megadrive for quantity.
June 14, 201410 yr Author Man Desert Strike was so cool. also thought that Megadrive transported Street Fighter II way better than the SNES did, who remembers that special controller for it :D
June 14, 201410 yr Mega drive was the best for me snes was good in fact there last real step forward as all over consoles were better but still behind everyone else in terms of tech N64 had carts still gamecube had tiny memory disks. The wii wasn't hd the wii u sucks. Say that there handheld consoles are goid
June 14, 201410 yr SNES version of SF2 was better than Mega Drive but Mega Drive version of Mortal Kombat was better, it had blood and the SNES version didnt. Mega Drive version of WrestleMania was better too, it had more people and finishing moves, but it also came out a year or two later than the SNES version.
June 14, 201410 yr I was a SEGA kid for AGES (I'm sorry, truly sorry, but I couldn't resist). The first console I had was an Atari 2600 (my dad had an old Pong + Variants of Pong console before that) and then moved on to a Master System (which broke and I got a Master System II). From there it was a Megadrive, which was a huge part of my formative gaming years. The Mega-CD and 32x followed and I ended my SEGA run with the Saturn, which had some great games, but lousy support. It was on the Playstation from there (no Dreamcast) and it's been Sony's babies ever since (although I did own an N64 and a Gamecube in that time; they rarely got played outside of the wrestling games). The Megadrive was awesome for the following games (and I know not all of them are exclusives) -: Streets of Rage series Crude Busters Golden Axe and Golden Axe 2 Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 Arnold Palmer Golf Moonwalker Rocket Knight Adventures RoboCop Versus The Terminator The Terminator ToeJam & Earl Arrow Flash Mortal Kombat (with blood) Super Street Fighter II Eternal Champions Revenge of Shinobi Shadow Dancer Shinobi III Speedball II Batman Spiderman v The Kingpin X-Men Ranger X Gunstar Heroes ESWAT Castle of Illusion World of Illusion Quackshot Herzog Zwei Thunderforce IV Desert Strike Kid Chameleon Road Rash II Earthworm Jim Alisia Dragoon NBA Jam Judge Dredd

Mega Drive version of WrestleMania was better too, it had more people and finishing moves, but it also came out a year or two later than the SNES version. Funny, I was going to mention SF2 and how that was probably the one cross platform game you could clearly say was much better on the SNES though the 6 button controller for the Megadrive was better for playing SF2! :) If the megadrive had a version of Mario Kart then I'd barely even call it a contest in my eyes because the megadrive had some excellent RPG's that easily rival Zelda in terms of fun and playability.
June 14, 201410 yr The SNES pad was actually awesome for SFII as long as you banished your medium hit buttons to the shoulders and used the A,B,X,Y buttons for your light hit/heavy hit combinations. I'll definitely go along with the Megadrive having the definitive Mortal Kombat version though. It wasn't until Mortal Kombat 3 that the SNES even got a look in comparatively.
June 14, 201410 yr I never owned a megadrive, so the only time I ever played one was occasionally at a mates, so my opinion on this debate is definitely obscured by lack of knowledge. But I remember the excitement at Christmas when I got my SNES as a little kid, can't remember my exact age maybe like 7 or 8. It came as a shock to me as I hadn't asked for it at all and up until that point I hadn't been all that interested in playing video games, quite possibly the last time I was actually genuinely shocked but delighted at Christmas. From then on out I more or less new exactly what I was getting every year. Edited June 14, 201410 yr by Magic
June 14, 201410 yr I'm firmly in the Megadrive camp but then I never owned a SNES & I can't say for sure I ever even played one so I guess that makes me a Megadrive guy by default
June 14, 201410 yr I was more Nintendo then Sega growing up, because my mum and dad also gamed a little and they preferred Mario. Hell my dad still plays on the SNES to this day, not an EMU, the actual console as he finds playing the Tetris and Dr. Mario double cart relaxing when his aches and pains bother him. That's right, a 74 year old man uses the SNES to help battle his arthritis, that's how good it is! I'm a Zelda mark as well, so for me it was always the SNES and I still argue to this day, that even though it is prettier and has more innovative controls these days, the best version of Zelda was Link to the Past on the SNES. Also the best platform games for me was Super Mario World 1 and 2 (aka Yoshi's Island) and Super Mario Allstars which were Nintendo exclusives. Finally Starwing (not Starfox, that was the name in Japan and then for future releases) and Mario Kart, two of the most finally balanced and innovative games at the time and don't even get me started on the awesome Mario Golf and Tennis! Mortal Kombat was pap though until really Ultimate MK3 on the SNES but the SNES had more auto fire enabled pads which was awesome for the special stages on Super Street Fighter 2 when you used E. Honda.
June 15, 201410 yr Snes shades it for me. Although I was never a fanboy and had both. Still have both set up in my console room. Starfox was ridiculous for it's time, and Mario world/kart and Zelda were amazing. I've just finished Zelda after 21 years lol! I did love some Megadrive games though. Preferred EA hockey, FIFA and Madden on it. Also micro machines with the extra game ports. Road Rash was great, streets of rage too. Aaahhhhh man.
June 17, 201410 yr I had the snes 1st and got a megadrive later. Both are brilliant and now reside up in my loft. Loved sonic, micro machines, mortal kombat, ghostbusters, wwf raw, golden axe and streets of rage, on the megadrive. Loved super mario world, street fighter 2 turbo, zelda, shadowrun, mario kart, iss deluxe, goeman legend of the mystical ninja, lagoon, donkey kong country, super punch out and super bomberman on the snes. If I could only have one i think i'd go with the snes as zelda and shadowrun are two of my favourite games of all time.
