Hey its the nickname given to him in the business. If you ask me Taker with his streak or Hogan, seen as he was the main attraction that started the concept, should get the nickname but that is Michael's as per the WWE.

 

Its their event, who am I to argue with them?

Having wrestled at 23 events, surely Undertaker (regardless of the quality of the match / position of the card) would be classed as Mr. WrestleMania... especially as it's been the only place to really see him fight for a few years now.

Hogan is the only choice for me, favouritism aside, but matches are a work, its fiction. What Hogan did, putting the event on the map, is reality. If it weren't for Hogan (obviously not on his own, but you know what I'm saying) getting the thing started and really being the legitimate face of not only WM, but the company and the entire wrestling business in general, there wouldn't have been a WM for Taker, HBK or whoever else to have those matches on. I used to say it all the time when people would dilute what Hogan did when they were praising Austin and Rock: Those guys made their names in the house that Hogan built.

 

And on top of that, if we are going to go on matches, HBK is still not Mr WM. He has a record of 6 wins and 11 losses. Thats shite even in a kayfabe sense. His first 5 WM appearances (2 wins, 3 losses) were all either jobber tag team matches or opening card matches. He opened the show 3 years in a row. Straight jobber status losing to the likes of the Orient Express, Tatanka, Twin Towers and so on. Two of his wins have been over old men (Flair, Vince), one was a tag team opener with nothing on the line, one was an opening against jobber El Matador, one was in the worst Iron Man match ever and the other over Jericho is a GREAT match. He has only main evented the show 4 times in 17 appearances (although he has been mostly in marquee matches when he wasn't main eventing to be fair to him) with one of those being a last minute injury replacement for Triple H. No way is this guy Mr WM. And Taker has been in too many mid card matches on the show too, some of them real stinkers, not knocking his amazing run late in his career where he was doing stuff nobody could have imagined he was capable of 10 years earlier.

 

Hogan has main evented or been in marquee matches in all of his 11 WM matches. Never a throwaway mid card match (Hogan/Andre was the selling point match of WM4, make no mistake) unless you want to consider the tag title match at WM9 which is fair enough. His combination of real life business accomplishments at the event long before the name of the show sold itself regardless of who was there and also kayfabe/worked accomplishments of being always in or around the main event focal point of the show puts him top of the list.

No typo, Hogan/Andre was the selling point of WM4. It wasn't the main event, but it was the huge rematch from the SNME twin-ref screw job match between Hulk and Andre where Hogan 'lost' his belt after being champion for 4 years and was the culmination of their 14 month long feud. Everybody thought that whoever won that match would go on to win the tournament, that they both got DQ'ed and neither advanced was a huge shocker at the time. Everybody thought Hogan was getting his belt back at WM4 and the re-match with Andre was the most talked about thing leading in to the show, the whole tourney was built around it, and it ended up being pretty shite.

Hogan slammed Andre in that match but nobody remembers it, the match was the shits too. People talk about Andre being washed up at WM3, but that match was great, if you want to see Hogan vs Andre with a realllllly washed up Giant, watch WM4. He was completely useless.

I think Vince did a lot to make WrestleMania. He was a great businessman. There might have been a WrestleMania without Hogan as someone else could have been the top guy but there would be no Mania without Vince. None.

I assume we are talking wrestlers, not the owner of the company. And in 1985, NOBODY would have been able to be put in Hogans spot and be as successful as Hogan was. If it was that easy, they would have 20 Hulk Hogans and Steve Austins on the roster all the time.

Hogan / Hulkamania were a thing before he came to Vince full time in 1985.

 

Also, what didn't start in 1985? The topic of the thread (although now diverted) is WrestleMania, which did start in 1985.

Plus he was full time in 1984, won the title in that year and Hulkamania started then and due to the rise of Hogan in that year as well as the deal with MTV and Mr. T it allowed the WWE to reach a level that Wrestlemania was viable.

 

No Hogan, no Mania - no Mania then later on there would be no explosion in popularity for Austin, Rock et all.
