A debate that seems to rage on social media every festive season but......

Die Hard

Christmas movie or movie that just happens to take place at Christmas?

Featured Replies

Christmas movie for me, was it released round December?

Obviously a Christmas movie, its shown on TV literally every Christmas, its set on Christmas Eve at an office Christmas party...doesnt need to specifically be about Christmas to be a Christmas movie. Only thing is, it was released in like June or July. Gremlins is the same.

On a side note, the word Christmas (now 7) was used too many times in a 3-line post right there.

There was a guy on Key 103, the local Manchester Radio station the other day, that argued that Gremlins was not a Christmas movie. Gizmo was given to Billy as a Christmas present and like Belty said, the setting and everything else is bloody festive.

Just because an annoying little girl isn't trying to prove Santa exists or Jim Carrey isn't prancing about in a daft costume doesn't mean something is not a Christmas film.

So yes, for me, Die Hard is a Christmas film and not only is it one, it is also the best one for me as well.

By that reckoning (which I agree with Die Hard being a christmas movie) does that mean Die Hard 2 is also a christmas movie? Wasnt that set around the festive season?
I think I'd class it in the same way as Lethal Weapon is a Christmas movie.

It was, they tried to cash in on the same formula but a bit bigger with it being in an Airport and because it wasn't as intimate (and had an inferior bad guy) for me it wasn't as good and is probably the 4th best Die Hard film....

1. Die Hard

2. Die Hard with a Vengeance

3. Die Hard 4.0

4. Die Hard 2: Die Harder

5. Its a Good Day to Die Hard

To me its

1. Die Hard with a Vengeance

2. Die Hard 2: Die Harder

3. Die Hard

the other two doesn't count as they are crap

NA. Die Hard 4.0

NA. Its a Good Day to Die Hard

There isn't even a debate for me when it comes to Gremlins, it's clearly a Christmas movie.

But yeah I've always seen Die Hard as a Christmas movie, the vitriol that this causes among some people is quite bizarre. It's almost as if, if channel 4 can't show it pre watershed on a Sunday December evening it can't be a Christmas movie by default. Which is clearly nonsense.

May take a lot of heat, but other than the party that puts everybody in the building, it is an action film just based at Christmas time..... I think in order to be a Christmas film(don't crucify me to hard now) there has to be an under lying lesson learned or a belief proven true....Just do not think "do not fuck with John McClane" is a Christmas lesson.... Think something along the gift of the Magi..... On the fence on Gremlins, I could be swayed either way.......

P.S. TOTALLY HATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A CHRISTMAS STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He did learn a lesson, he realised how much he loved his family and that he would do anything to protect them and his marriage and likewise his wife learned why she loved him in the first place and wanted to give it another go. That's before we even get to Sgt. Al Powell who managed to get his nerve back, help save the day and still get back to the wife before she gave birth which was truly a miracle.

So lessons learned as well as the miraculous defeat of Gruber, his henchman and it snowed, on the west coast.

Christmas movie. End of

@Evil Gringo you are correct that he learned a lesson, but he did not learn a "Christmas" lesson..... and if I am not mistaken his marriage ends in the sequels. Sgt Carl Winslow was ordered to go home, so him making it home to witness the birth, was not a miracle, had he just followed his orders he would have been home in plenty of time.

Christmas movies are supposed to teach "US" a lesson while the hero of the story also learns one..... what did "WE" learn? not to go to the Nakatomi Plaza on Christmas? or the fact that the Quarterback is toast?? maybe... always leave your giant teddy bear with your limo driver???

But since @The Fury has put his foot down...... I guess I will have to change my point of view:dumb:

On the fence on Gremlins, I could be swayed either way.......
Gremlins....set at Christmas, Gizmo given to Billy as a Christmas gift, released in the cinema at Christmas...time to jump down off that fence homie.
