While looking at a video for another thread, I noticed that Will Smith is officially going to be the Genie in the new live-action Aladdin film coming out in 2019. I never thought there was someone out there who could fit in the talented, comedic shoes of Robin Williams, but remembering Will Smith from his Fresh Prince days, I think he could be the only capable of doing the role justice.

Well, I had the same thoughts but the fact of the matter is that both actors have their own individual strengths. Robin's shoes might be too big to fit into now, but I believe that with time, we'll get used to Will. He has proved that he's a good actor in the past.
I think that while he may not be able to fill Robin Williams shoes in an animated film, he can hold his own in a live action film. I am a big fan of Wil Smith and can't wait to see how he will do with this film. The story of Aladdin is a great one and I can't wait to see it.
The opinion out there is divided. On the other hand, comparing the two will not yield much. All in all, I think Will Smith possess the onscreen persona and his worldwide popularity has never waned. Good choice, if you ask me.
Just my opinion, but, Will Smith will never beat the Genie that Robin Williams did. Robin's off the cuff humor and constant wit will be very hard to top, even for the great Will Smith! Good luck to him.....
I think they're both funny and Will could do a good job as the genie especially if he's able to tap into his Fresh Prince days. It's been a while since I've really seen him do anything all that comedic. But I think he'll do a good job here. I agree with Carmie though, I don't think he could've held his own in an animated film as well as he can in a live-action one.

There was just something about Robin Williams voice that will always stick to the Genie character. When we think Genie, we will always think Robin. When they movie comes out maybe we will be thinking Will and Robin when it comes to Genie. I think will has the look to pull it off onscreen really well.

I agree, Carmie, I will always think of Robin. I don't think Will's performance could alter that in any way just because Robin's Genie has been in my mind for far too long. I do think Will will give a great performance, though! I have yet to see him in a role that I thought was a poor fit for him.
I am a big fan of Will Smith and Robin Williams but I can't compare the two. I see them in such different roles that's it's hard to see them side by side. Robin's shoes are very big right now but I think Will can do a great job as genie.
In his wildest dreams, I don't believe that Will can meet the comedic genius that was Robin Williams. Starting with Mork from Ork, he hit the highest standard and quickest offhand remarks. I loved to watch Robin in comedies. Will should stick to action.
