A close friend mentioned that she feels that all these shows borrow from each other. She's watched Game of Thrones and couldn't bring herself to watching Vikings. I think each of these shows are unique and it never hurts to watch all of them. Is Ragnar Lothbrock Vikings' stand-out actor?

I watched Vikings because of Ragnar; he's such a talented actor. I have also watched Game of Thrones up to its sixth season. Though they have slightly different plots, both are actually exciting to watch.
I agree with Coleman about Ragnar; Great actor and he made the show worthwhile, I think. I was under the impression that his character was killed. Maybe I'm mixing up two shows.

Well, I can't say I'm in complete disagreement with your friend. Shows like these that are based on historical events and legends, can have a lot of overlapping themes, character types, and plot devices. There's usually a lot of conquering, battles, fights for power, with some sexual encounters thrown in for variety and to try and make history more appealing to a wider audience. That's not to say they aren't good shows or don't have their unique aspects, but I can see how someone might feel like watching them gives them a similar viewing experience.

You're right, TalksALot, he is dead now.

I totally agree with you @LKC because historical events are intertwined in one way or the other. Would you say that the sexual encounters never existed? I haven't watched Vikings to the point where Ragnar dies but I am now even more curious to see who becomes the main character after he is gone?

Ha, no, I'm sure the sexual encounters existed, but the manner in which they were done, probably not. Like in GoT, based on a war (and culture) of Britain in the 1400s, there was really only on acceptable position (missionary). But they have freedom in GoT for that since they ultimately take out one religious power that dictates that sort of behavior. There are just different ways they "modernize" shows, and I just find that usually happens in those kinds of scenes. And I feel like that's something that adds to how these shows can feel similar.

Oops, sorry if that was a spoiler then. I haven't watched enough of the new season to say for sure, there are a few that look like they're being set up to take the lead, in my opinion.

Wow, this is quite an explanation because even if a TV series has an ancient setting, it has to appeal to a huge chunk of society and that necessitates the recreation of some scenes. By the way, I have never cared about spoilers, they always make me anticipate watching.

I know, I went a little overboard because I have an obsession with that particular era. So things like that tend to stick out to me. I totally get why they do it, I really only mentioned that they throw in the sexual scenes amidst historical events and those two elements, sexy history, can make the shows seem similar.

What I have always told my friends is that I can watch any epic TV show, irrespective of whether or not the plots borrow from each other. There's something about watching movies based on a certain period in history. Hats off to the producers!
