You've got a time machine (or Time-Turner or TARDIS or whatever you want). To what era would you travel? Now imagine that you know that you're going to have to spend a year during the time you choose. Would you still choose the same era?

I'd go to the future for almost certain, somewhere in the distant future probably. Though if I were going back in time and spending a year there, I'd probably pick sometime in the 40's to 60's. Not sure exactly when. Idealistically, I'd make some money or take what I have and invest in certain stocks, then come back to present day and cash in :D

I would travel back to my home town, to the year 1914. The house that I grew up in was built in that year by my great-grandparents, and I would be fascinated to see it being built.

I would also love to look around the old town and see how it was back then, as it underwent a lot of changes in the 1960's, as did a lot of English towns. A lot of the town's medieval history was lost back in the sixties, so I would like to see what the place was like before the major changes, with the old buildings still in situ.

Even if I had to spend a year there, that would be the time I would go back to. I'm not sure where I would live though - perhaps my ancestors would take me in?

@Zack T, so you're basically Biff from Back to the Future II? :p

My initial answer was to go to Ancient Rome (or Greece) or maybe the Renaissance. I don't think I could handle spending a year in either of those times though. For one, I don't think I could handle the lack of hygiene. Secondly, I'd probably die from some ridiculous disease or mess up the future somehow. I think I'd go back to the 1920s and party with Fitzgerald and all the rest of those guys.

Hi @Hal, actually, I love your idea to go back to Ancient Rome or Greece - it would be so interesting to see what those times were really like. I would also like to see what Britain was like under Roman rule - they have left so many things behind that still have relevance today.

As for hygiene, I think that the Ancient Romans did have public bathhouses!

I understand your worries about disease. Even something like toothache would have been really terrible!

Same here. I'd like to jump 50-100 years into the future. I think the world will look radically different. It would be interesting (and depressing) to see how global warming has affected all life-forms. I also want to see what the political stance looks like in the United States and to see if a female has been elected president during that time.

I'd probably go even further than that, 200 or 300 years, maybe 500 to 1000 or even further.

@Zack T If I were going to the future I'd choose somewhere that far in the future. I'd want things to be completely unrecognisable.

Although I understand wanting to travel back in time as well. I think that's what I'd prefer. @Hal, I can understand why you'd be concerned about those sorts of things. My answer would normally be during Henry VIII's time but the health issues back then would keep me from wanting to be there for a year. I would also only be interested if I got to be a courtier. Since you don't normally get to choose things like that (at least that's what films have taught us), I'd probably go with something like @AmyRichmond and choose something personal to me.

It would be really interesting. I don't know if I'd want to go back to Britain during that time era. I'd probably rather be at the heart of the Roman Empire. Then again, if I've got a year maybe I could check out more than just one place.

They did have those. I guess that's something. My big thing is dental hygiene though. Can you imagine how bad people's breath smelled? And, like you said, toothaches could turn serious really fast. Then there are all the bugs and rodents. I just don't know how good of a time it would really be. By the time you got used to it, it would probably be time to go home.
