I don't know where to place this topic because it can be in the entertainment and games section of the forum. So what movies do you like that were derived from video games?

I love the Resident Evil movie series. You can enjoy the movie even if you don't play the game and appreciate the movie much more if you play the game.

I don't think I've ever watched a film that was derived from a video game where I hadn't played the game first. Tomb Raider is probably my favourite. I remember liking the Super Mario Bros. movie from the '90s but I'm not sure I'd love it now.
Need For Speed was disappointing and it made me stop playing the game because I remember the movie when I play it. Tomb Raider was okay for me. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was great because the creator of the game and the movie is the same.
Assassin's Creed is much better played in the game than viewing it in the theaters. I also like the film adaptation of Final Fantasy. If the creator of the game and the director of the movie is the same person, then the movie will have a similar story with the game.

I really liked the first Mortal Kombat movie.

Super Mario Brothers from the 90's was pure awful, just so bad. I watched it as a kid and I liked it because I was a kid and didn't know any better.

I've played World of Warcraft for years but I still haven't seen the movie for it, and I don't really care to, honestly.

I've seen Final Fantasy Advent Children, that was pretty cool.

I don't think I've seen any other Game based Movies. I know I've never watched Tomb Raider or Need For Speed or Resident Evil or Assassin's Creed.

I've seen that movie and they tried too much to stick with the game story and visual interpretation. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has watched the game. It might attract non-gamers to try playing the game after watching the movie.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was criticized quite heavily for its plot. I didn't think that it was that bad, though it did lack some unique twists. I thought it was an experiment with the technology at the time, to produce an animated film looking almost as real as the regular ones. The premise probably would've worked better as a game with more interactive features, to be honest.

Many of the critics were not players of Final Fantasy so they analyze the movie based on their preconceived notion on what makes a good movie. I have played the game from FF6 to FF10. The plot of the movie remained true to its game predecessors, so I enjoyed watching the movie as I can relate to the monsters, weapons, places, and characters portrayed in the movie.

Unlike Advent Children, The Spirits Within was a standalone project with a general aim. There must have been something wrong if those without any knowledge of the game franchise couldn't enjoy the movie. I can understand the expectation and the disappointment that came with it, even though it was a familiar trip for us players.
