Crazy Rich Asians

I saw this title quite often on the headlines lately, so I checked its trailer. I didn't see anything extraordinary about it, but I could be wrong as the film is yet to come to the UK. Romantic comedy stories should work hard to impress me; I can't remember the last time I enjoyed one.

Here is the trailer for those who haven't seen it. What do you say?

A lot of big Hollywood romantic comedy films don't offer a close look at a different culture, at least not outside of historical or "vacation" type films (generally speaking, of course). Throw in good-looking people, ridiculously wealthy lifestyles, and well, it sounds like a film that would do well in Hollywood to me. I haven't read too much about it myself so I could be wrong. I don't particularly see anything that justifies the hype, but I'm sure I'll end up seeing it eventually.

I knew enough about myself not to wear mascara when I went to see it.

Did you cry? @Glimm mentioned that it's a romantic comedy movie, so I wasn't sure if you were crying because of its sad twists or because you were laughing too much. I wasn't planning to comment--I wasn't even planning to check this movie at the theater--but looks like I will follow your steps soon!

@Salome G I agree with Luna; your response was unexpected, but it certainly raised my interest. What do you think of the film's cultural elements? With such title and casts, I thought it would be another story about the rich ones and their romantic intrigues. Nothing we can't find on other works.

Well, I'm not Asian, so I can't speak to the cultural aspects with any authority. At its heart, I guess it's just a romcom, but because of its cast, it means something more. Like, Asian men are rarely cast as romantic interests or even just as hot dudes, and in CRA, there are several thirst trap moments with Asian men. That sounds like damning with faint praise, but if you rarely get to see people who look like you, it's kind of a big deal.

Anyway, I enjoyed it. And I think the world is kind of starved for romcoms lately, as they fell out of favor. But judging by the popularity of CRA and Netflix's To All the Boys I've Loved Before, we'll see some more soon.
