Nirvana tune named modern classic

Rock band Nirvana's seminal tune Smells Like Teen Spirit has been named the greatest song of the past 25 years by music channel VH1.

The song, which was the anthem of the 1990s grunge era, beat tracks by Michael Jackson, Guns 'n' Roses, Eminem and U2 to the top of the list.

Nirvana are credited with being one of the most popular and important rock bands of recent years, and have influenced a generation of rock stars.

Michael Jackson's Billie Jean was ranked second in the list of 100 songs, which will be counted down on the channel from Monday.

In third were another rock band, Guns 'n' Roses, with their 1988 hit Sweet Child O' Mine, followed by Eminem's Lose Yourself.

Guns 'n' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, who contributed to the show, said Smells Like Teen Spirit was "a breakthrough for a great scene".

"It was kind of another victory, I think, for a misunderstood music, you know. The dam broke when Teen Spirit came out," he said.

Smells Like Teen Spirit reached number 6 in the US and seven in the UK when it was released in 1991.

But it established them as one of the world's biggest bands until lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

One of U2's hits, 1992's One, was the Irish group's highest-placed song at number five, with Run-DMC at six with Walk This Way.

Also in the top 10 were Prince, Whitney Houston, The Police and Madonna.

The top 20 included Van Halen's Jump plus tracks by Pink Floyd, Def Leppard and Public Enemy.

That song is class though. I really used to like Nirvana alot. I still like them now, but dont listen to them like I used to.

Im glad the song won the award.

Although VH1's list of awards are forever growing. They've held a count down award thing for just about everything possible now havent they? ;)

Sweet Child O' Mine is quite possibly the most annoying tune ever. The next time I hear someone with that as their ringtone, I'm gonna start chasing them with a rather large frying pan. Nice to see One by U2 up there. Fabulous song which should probably have been higher but at least its there.

I dont particularly rate smells like teen spirit, but everything about Nirvana has been blown out of proportion now so it's obvious it would win.

I think its hard for most of the people on this forum (my self included) to appreciate the effect Nirvana had as we were too young, I think I was about 12 when he died. My older brother was a big fan though and I remember when they were around. Their music was like nothing I had ever heard. Apart from being a brilliant song, I think its the effect it had on the music industry that is realy important i.e. taking 'alternative' music seriously. All of the bands around at the moment owe a great debt to Nirvana.

Apart from that its nice to see Prince in the top 10.

I didn't like Nirvanna but that song was class. I think it got no1 because it was such a pioneering song and what it actually did for music. Can anyone actually understand a word Kurt said in that song?

I also have a problem with angles like this, would that song be No.1 if the lead-singer hadn't died?..Not only that, but he died young.

That true i like Eminem but for Lose Yourself to get 4th is abit silly, i think Sing For The Moment should have been there instead or maby 2 pac-changes or Broken wing or Tha Crossroads by Bone Thugs n' Harmony but Missing you by Puff Daddy should be in the top 5 but teen spirt deserved to get number 1 if you ask me.

As a big Nirvana fan I was damn happy to see that Teen Spirit was number 1. I only think it got there though for what it done to music, by flipping it in another direction, but things could of been alot different, which ever song done that to music, would be number 1.

I don't understand the Eminem song being at number 4, that is not that great of a song compared to the brilliance of 'Stan'

Oh and I had to look online for the lyrics of teen spirit, hehe, I was making my own words up for the song like, 'Grampas stupid and contageos'

Quote the Stevie nevermore
