Hey Yo!

Long story short.....

Got Sky, with it being plugged through the phone line. Go to use the 'net, and hardly connects, and when it does its a slow connection with no sites loading. Also, won't sign into MSN as "I'm behind a firewall", all since getting Sky.

Is this normal with the Sky package? If so, does that basically mean I can't use the net?

Thanks in advance :xyx

Best thing is to phone the Sky Customer Services - they'll help you out.
Cheers :xyx
I had very similar problems when trying to connect using free serve. AOL was the only company i could install. If you sort out the reason, let me know Cactus as i would also be interested :xyx
I occaiasonally get the firewall message when signing into MSN but i just connect again and its fine. As for the problem with Sky, Ive never had any problems having the two together sorry :?

How has the nice Sky man conected you're digibox to the phone line, he would either have connected it direct to an existing phone socket or run in a new cable to an old telephone point, has he wired it directly into the old telephone point or just stuck an extension plug on the cable and plugged it in.

I'm not sure if this can affect you net connection but I may be able to help if you give me this info.

Sky, NTL/Telewest, BT "Engineers" are usually tits, and I get all sorts of problems with their shoddy work in houses I've wired.

A connection plugged into an existing phone socket, which at the other end as a port for the Digi Box. Hope thats right?

Right, go to the existing phone socket and pull out the plug that is connected to the cable that goes to the digibox, then reconnect and telephones/fax machines etc that were previously connected to that socket, so that the telephone system is set up as it was before the Sky system was installed, don't worry about the contratual clause which says it must be conected for a year, if you unplug it for an hour and they say something you can say it got knocked out and you didn't notice. But they never used to say anything to me and I used to disconnect mine for days while I farted around with my phone system.

So unplug that then go and try connecting to the internet, if there is an improvement then you know it's the Sky box or the cable that has been installed. Two things you can do, firstly you could go along to a DIY store and buy a telephone extension cable and use it to replace the cable that the Sky man has fitted or ring Sky up and complain. I'd suggest the latter as it could be a fault with the digibox.

However if there is no improvement after you disconnect the new cable, then the problem isn't with the Sky system and the best thing is probably to phone your ISP.

Hope that helps.

Thanks KJ!

Will try that V. Soon!

May I ask, why to Sky make a fuss of having it connected? I mean, apart from receiving updates, they don;t lose anything financially do they?

I think that they believe that if it's connected then you will use it every now and then, and then they make money from it. It's also used to automatically order Box Office events/movies although you don't get charged for that on your phone bill.

Cheers,

I had a feeling it was becuase of the intereactive stuff.
