The legacy of Stampede Wrestling

Some have heard of stampede wrestling the Calgary promotion run by Stu Hart. Many of the WWE stars present and past were trained by Stu and his sons.

Brett, Owen, Davey Boy Smith, Jim 'the anvil' Neidhart, and Dynamite Kid, and brian Pillman were all part of this promotion.

Perhaps my favourite wrestlers from stampede were the heels. Gama singh and karachi vice , never made it to the WWF ,but they were great heals. Bad NEWS Allen was my favourite he had a short run in the WWF as Bad News Brown. He was doing the stone cold anti-hero stuff 20 years ago... Who can forget his tag line ' beer belly share croppers".

It is interesting to note that the Hart school of wrestling produced some of todays top stars notably Chris benoit, Y2J, and Lance Storm.

Anyway it is hard for me to think of wrestling with out thinking about the contributions the Harts made to it.

Don't forget Stu himself, who is probably the last surviving member from the pre-1950 shoot days. Him, Lou Thesz and George Gordienko were the last shooters from that era, Gordienko and Thesz passed away last year and early this year. On 'Bad News' Allen Coage, he won a bronze medel in the '76 Olympics in Judo.

Harry Smith is indeed in Stampede, and is 16 years old (I think). Just before Davey died, he got to live-out a dream of his, tagging with his son. While the likes of Storm, Benoit and Jericho got their start in Stampede, it's hard to believe they learned more in Stampede than they did in Japan (Benoit in New Japan, Storm and Jericho in WAR)

Of course! Stu himself is thought highlly off in my opinion. Wasn't the rumour just before Davey died that him and his son were going to the WWF to tag, perhaps as a rehashed British Bulldogs?

Yes there still is a stampede wrestling. Though this current incarnation is a shadow of what it used to be. At one time stampede was shown nationally in Canada through syndication and then later on TSN (The Sports Network).

Harry Smith does wrestle for Stampede.

I did not mention Japan. Yes, all the wrestlers I mentioned including Bad news have spent much of their careers in japan.

One could also argue that storm, Jericho, were developed on ECW then on WCW. benoit really developed alot during his run on WCW working with Flair and AA in the Horseman.

I lament the disappearance of independent promotions. Sure there are some left but the WWE really destroyed the independent promotions and killed their access to TV time.

It is true - I believe Davey was in talks about that time.
