Guest MillionLiraMan
What? If Metallica win this poll it would ridicule the entire TWO Music Forum. Their cover of Thin Lizzy's version of Whisky In The Jar is perhaps, in fact no it IS, the worst example of musical homicide ever to have pissed on my eardrums. It is AWFUL. I can't believe this is even a question, and less so that people actually prefer the Metallica dirge. Thin Lizzy made a great job of that song long before the corporate misinterpreters of rock butchered it. Of course Whisky In The Jar is in fact an old Irish folk song, and in fact I have heard and even own other versions of it by the likes of The Pogues and The Dubliners, many traditional Irish bands have done it. What Thin Lizzy did though was to reinvent the song as a more rock style tune, and what a great and creative job they did with it. They rocked up the song but kept it with emotion epitomised in Phil Lynott's vocals, superb as always, the beauty of it being that they still kept it simple with Eric Bell, Lynott and Brian Downey showing their musicianship while keeping the essence of the song, if you like. All Metallica did was bash out a crap cover of that with a lower key and that crap put on shouty pretend gruff rock voice with another gimmicky crap 'wreck the instruments' video. If Phil Lynott isn't turning in his grave at the thought of what they did to their arrangement of that song, then I reckon he should be. What a load of sh*t. Once again, I cannot stress how awful the Metallica cover is. Don't get me wrong, Metallica have done some songs that I've quite liked, and I'm not writing them off as useless or irrelevant. However, I think they get too much credit sometimes, and there is NO WAY that that cover version can be excused. When I say it's the worst cover ever I even include Gareth Gates for now (until he eventually tries to do Back In Black or something, the tit). What possessed them to do what they did I have absolutely no idea, but for all their other better material they really deserved genital torture for that one. So, I voted for Thin Lizzy. Guest MillionLiraMan
Bah, I try to educate you lot but it just doesn't register does it?! :D The fact is that Metallica are in the spotlight now and the media's blow-them-no-matter-what-shite-they-put-out brigade is in full flow, so I would be very surprised if they didn't get the nod here by an absolute landslide. It's just the same as if Linkin Park, Korn or Limp Bizkit covered the likes of Ramble On by Led Zeppelin, Whole Lotta Rosie by AC/DC or I'm The One by Van Halen everyone would rave about their cover and blow them, saying it was better and then dismissing the original simply because they heard the cover first and went with the media brigade sucking off anything the Kerrang! bands do. Hey, reading over that it is a bit of a rant, but that's just me, Thin Lizzy are one of my favourite bands so maybe I'm not completely open-minded. Personally though I don't think it's that since I do like some Metallica stuff, I just can't understand how anyone could prefer the b***ocks they churned out when it did nothing for them and only served to piss on Phil Lynott's memory. Try to imagine Avril Lavigne covering Enter Sandman or One or something to see what I mean (I can't imagine how awful that would sound, but try!). I'm not trying to compare Metallica with Avril Lavigne, but picture the way you would hear it and scream 'Oy! Lavigne! No!' Harry Enfield style. I've never heard this debated before, normally when it gets mentioned I rant, people look at me scared and then change the subject! So this is interesting. Dead Crow 370
I voted 'Tallica. Whether one was better than the other is irrelevent. It's down to personal opinion. MLM, you're turning into Singhy. STOP IT!!! :D
Guest Alan
No Contest, Thin Lizzy's version is by far the better. Metallica adapted it for their style of music, but the song was not meant to sound like that, otherwise Thin Lizzy's version would have sounded different.
