Crowd Trouble

Having just watched the Aberdeen Rangers game I have to say that the crowd was a disgrace. There was no need for the Rangers fans to throw coins at Robbie Winters, and the 20 or so Aberdeen fans that got past security and into the Rangers area making it worse were disgraceful. The game was delayed for 20 minutes for the disgraceful actions of a fraction of the crowd. Still, Big Amo's brilliant strike, and the play from both sides after the delay was good, but it still doesnt take away from the fact that the game was spoiled by the actions of the minority.

Even though I'm from the Green side of Glasgow, you can't just blame the Rangers fans. No, they shouldn't have been throwing coins at Robbie Winters, but it was Aberdeen fans that got onto the track (incidentally, where the HELL were the police during this? 20 Aberdeen sheepies just sneak by them, and they don't notice???) and tried to attack the Rangers fans.

Aberdeen fans got off last month during the Celtic game when they were pelting the linesmen, players, police and referee with Snowballs - something should have been done then, and something should be done now, but I bet it'll just be a smack on the wrist like a £10000 suspended fine and not being allowed to kick the games off at 5:30pm.

Nice touch from Amoruso to try and calm down the Rangers hordes, but I thought Barry Ferguson was captain? Come to think of it, it was probably some of Barry's cousins that started it...

Vampiro, it wasn't just Rangers fans who caused trouble. The Aberdeen fans inflamed the situation by running over to the Rangers end.

I hope what I just said isn't taken as me defending the Rangers fans who started the incident.

I sat and watched that game last night and I felt embarrased to be a fan of Rangers Football Club - and thats coming from someone who is as big a supporter of that club as anyone.

The bottom line is that Rangers have their fair share of scumbags - probably more than most clubs. In saying that Aberdeen have a history with Rangers and the tension between the clubs is hardly helped when their fans sing songs about Ian Durrant and the injury he picked up against them years ago.

I agree with Dreamer - where the hell were the police that let about 20 Aberdeen "fans" slip past them. I was also thinking the same thing about Ferguson when the situation started. Where the hell was he? Amoruso was the one that went over to try and calm the situation down. Amoruso showed true leadership last night and was absolutely outstanding during the match, scoring a great goal in the process. Everyone at Ibrox knows who the real captain is at Rangers...

Crippler's spot on there - every club has their lunatic fringe of supporters, and the police should have been aware of the bad blood between Aberdeen and... well, basically everyone.

I remember a cup game a few years back at Hampden, Aberdeen vs. Dundee Utd and there was running battles at Central station, all instigated by Aberdeen fans.

Aberdeen always seem to get let off the hook, when they are as bad as anyone in Scotland for crowd trouble.

Course you could tell it wasn't Aberdeen fans throwing coins - they weren't on elastic :)

Surprised me your average Rangers fan carries coins - I thought they'd throw fivers ;)

Being an on-off Rangers fan (my dad kept buying me a season ticket for years, despite the fact I prefer the less hostile atmousphere at Hamilton) I saw the match, and was disgusted by the minority of fans who decided to endanger the well being of fellow supporters. Credit must go to Mike McCurry, who handled the game really well.

Amorouso's plea was a nice gesture, but where was Barry Ferguson? Surely the PA announcer telling the crowd the match would be off if the behaviour continued should have happened right away.

I can't agree with Charlie Nicolas though. He said that we have no chance of getting Euro 2008 if we act like that. But look at the facts. Main bidders for the next world cup are Germany and South Africa. At the last world cup, German fans killed a French policeman. Just last year, South African fans were killed in a tragedy during a match, which could have been avoided if fans were stopped from going into the already crowded stands.

There is no easy way to stop this. Just keep banning the fans who don't have football as a priority when they come to matches. It sickens me when a family game can degenerate into sectarian brawls.

By the way, I blame Neil Simpson for all this, I was a huge Durrant fan :)
