***Official SmackDown Thread - 29th October 2003***

Mostly full on the side facing the TV, but a few long sections tarped off on the TV side. Good thing they went there. It made it look more full than would have otherwise and probably saved them a bundle. The downside is that the smaller venue negated having Rey Mysterio jump out or Eddie Guerrero driving his in lowrider.

VELOCITY

(1) Horseshoe(?) defeated Elix Skipper (crowd had a decent pop for hometown favorite Primetime Skipper. Horseshoe (or whatever he's called) is a big muscleman, but is still very green.

(2) Jamie Noble & Sean O'Haire defeated a couple of enhancement talent that actually got in some good moves. Bummer not getting to see the Seanton bomb though.

(3) Rhyno defeated Kidman with the Gore (crowd popped for both, popped for the tease of the shooting star which didn't happen, and hit a decent ECW chant for Rhyno)

(4) Spanky & a small high flyer defeated Confusion(?) and Murray somebody. The high flyer with Spanky stole the match.

(5) Tajiri defeated Shannon Moore. Shannon was playing the face in this match. No green mist that I could see. - I think there was another match, but I stepped out

SMACKDOWN

- Opened with Vince and Heyman segment. Both were on top of their game, giving better than usual performances. Vince gave an ultimatum to Heyman to do whatever it took to take out the Undertaker before Survivor series or Vince would choke the life out of him. He had 15 minutes.

(!) Benoit & Angle defeated Cena & A-Train. Funny rap about Cena being Han Solo and A-Train being his Wookie. A-Train shoves Cena at the end, causing Cena to lay him out with his finisher. Possible face-turn?

(2) World's greatest tag team defeated FBI. Handicap match. Crowd was slow to pick up on this, but Benjamin Shelton hit some impressive moves to liven the crowd up. A great "where's my pizza" chant starts up.

- Ego-fest clip of Heyman kissing up to Vince, but in a confrontational way, regaling him of his past victories and to get him motivated to fix his own problem with the Undertaker (no taker tonight, BTW)

(3) Ultimo Dragon defeated Rey Mysterio. Tajiri and the Yakuza come out for color commentary. Great match, could be PPV quality. Tajiri interferes, knocking out Rey. Ultimo didn't realize it. There appeared to be an attempt to get Ultimo to join the Yakuza. He turned his back to them.

- Brock and Show arguing about their combined losses to Undertaker last week. Backstage hired help interrupts, telling Lesnar that Heyman is waiting for him in the ring.

- Heyman comes out with two giants: Matt Morgan and Nathan Jones. Lesnar comes out, thinks he's being set up, and calls out Show to be at his side. Lesnar and Heyman talk trash, but agree that Heyman's greed is leading him to naming Lesnar as the captain of a Survivor Series match (apparently, they are returning to the old format). He announces that Morgan, Jones and Show are on his team and the 5th is to be announced. All shake hands and walk out.

- Angle catches up to Benoit earlier and asks him to be on his team. After the usual "I don't like you and don't trust you" speech, he accepts. You can tell this two are having a good time together.

- Highlights of Eddie losing the tag titles to the Bashams. Chavo is running him down in the back, making comparisons of his letting down the family and the fans to his drinking and drug days (whoa! too much reality here). Eddie does a good job selling the emotional wound.

- Eddie comes out (in a different outfit...Hey! check the continuity here!) and makes the apology to the fans, his family and his whole latino race. Chant of "Eddie" breaks out and he really gets the crowd going. Man this guy is good on the stick. Emotions were not held back.

- Shaniqua comes out with the tag belts, taunting him and teasing an in-ring confrontation. The Basham's hit from the far side. Eddie gets the better of them and does a sidewalk slam on Shaniqua to a big pop. Eventually, he gets the beatdown. Chavo comes out a day and a half later and helps him to the back.

- The Bashams stick around for the match with Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty. All the signature moves his. Crowd is delighted and disgusted with the nasty stinkface, but it left them all happy. The old switcheroo is employed to get a roll-up pin on Scotty. Not victory dance then. - I must say that, even though Shaniqua is the amazon they make her out to be, she is really a pretty woman. They are fighting hard to fight that image.

(4) Special match: Halloween costume - Torrie vs. Dawn Marie. I was surprised by the lack of response that Dawn got compared to Torrie. Both are hot babes. Torrie had a bunny rabbit outfit with lots of very long carrots in her hands. (photos below) Dawn had a Wonderwoman-like outfit on. Funaki played the Jeremy Borash role well. He had on a '70s fro too (as did a couple of pimp-wannabes in the audience).

- Torrie won the audience cheer award, mostly for the bend overs (man...Kidman is a lucky guy). Phase 2 of the contest involved bobbing for apples, in what appeared to be a thick, cherry syrup. Dawn volunteered to 'get dirty' first, and basically bathed in the syrup, enough so that she could then remove her top and not be exposed.

- Funaki was losing his mind, Dawn left, Taz hopped in and played the Jerry Lawler role. He told Torrie that Dawn had given us the treat, but she should give the trick. She played with Funaki's mind for a moment before shoving Taz into the syrup. So-so laughter

- Lesnar catches up to Cena to break the news that he might be the 5th guy on his team.

- Eddie is being attended by a physician backstage, grabs Heyman as he's walking by and demands a rematch. Heyman grants his wish, but next week, it's Eddie vs the Bashams on his own (handicap match). Eddie gives another great performance...pure emotion!

- Angle's on the phone with someone, thanks him for his support. Unknown interviewer asks him about Lesnar's team. Angle mentions Benoit is on it and says that he's just gotten Hardcore Holly to be on his team since Holly's out for revenge on Lesnar. Then, he points out Englebert Humperdink and the Brooklyn Brawler as the two others. No, no, he was pointing past them to the APA.

(5) APA won by DQ over Lesnar & Show. Crowd was a little slow to get into this one. They really laid out the APA at the end Ron Simmons (oops... Faarooq) got the shin between the steel chair and the Show dropped from the second rope onto it. He sold like crazy. They laid out Bradshaw as Angle and Benoit came in. Angle hit a surprising Angle slam on Show. Nathan Jones and Matt Morgan came out and cleaned house. The 4 heels celebrated.

- I didn't know what happened afterwards as I bailed out then as the end music came on.

Biggest Pop: Angleslam on Lesnar

Most Heat: Vince on screen

Even the heels got cheered nearly all of the time as everyone was happy to see them again in person. Overall, a very good show. Maybe Heyman is on the writing team again.

Oh, and there was a promo for the Cat returning soon. Good pop from the Atlanta crowd for him.

OK, it wasn't Englebert, it was Harvey Wippleman

Next, the guy with Spanky was Paul London

Biggest Pop: The T-Shirt Canon Guy!

Biggest Heat: Tony Chimmel stopping the T-Shirt Guy!

The crowd noise for the T-Shirt Canon was MUCH louder than anything going on in the show...

Overall, a lot of the waffling got "BORING" Chants, from Vince, Paul Heyman, Eddie and anyone who was on the mic or the screen

Benoit got a decent sized pop, but the music is so damn loud that you can't hear much over it :P

Angle's "You Suck" in his music is louder than I remember, or more people are chanting along :)

Cena is PURE GOLD! His rap was fantastic!!!!

Brock responded to the crowd's "You Tapped Out" chants, but A-Train ignored the "Shave Your Back" ones - although a LOT of people were doing Wookee references :D

The thoughts of "Oh God, It's Nathan Jones" were there, but the guys is BIG, so Vince must love him :P

Morgan looks FAR more impressive than Jones - his Sit-Out Power Bomb actually looked quite painful - and it looked like Jones dumped Benoit wrong on the Gut Wrench Power Bomb... looked like he landed on his tail bone

Eddie got more "Eddie" chants than any other chants all night long (if that makes sense), although he got a LOT of "boring" chants after a few mins

God I hate Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty!!! :P

Overall, too much talking, not enough wrestling, but what there was was pretty good...

Sorry to sound like a jack-off, but if you're gonna post the picture on the page instead of a link, could you resize the picture to be a bit smaller please.. like, about 500pixels width or something. It just really makes the thread harder to read, especially for 800x600 people :).

Oh, just so you know, about 30% of the arena was blocked off, and about 20% of the remaining seats were empty

There were a LOT of seats in all sections without people in

And people were getting up and leaving before the main event - I mean, who REALLY wants to see the APA and Show wrestle? :P

I'd probably mark-out for the Torrie and Dawn Marie photos... again ;)

Is it just me or does the SD main event just seem a lot weaker than it used to right now?

The person who wrote the report that Chris posted... argh

Shaniqua attractive? Oh dear.

And when the hell did the WWE steal Prime Time Elix Skipper :(

Am I right in saying at least two matches were cut from UK TV?
  • Author

You should have seen 3 matches, and the Hallowe'en thing:

Angle/Benoit vs. Cena/A-Train

Rey vs. Ultimo

APA vs. Show/Lesnar

The WGTT match was cut for reasons that are unknown.

3 MATCHES ON A FRICKIN' SHOW LEADING UP TO SURVIVOR SERIES? WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY PLAYING AT????!!!

Cheers,

Chris :)

After a decent Raw I tuned into Smackdown hoping the same...bah, it was crap!

The lack of wrestling SERIOUSLY hurt the show, which is a shame, as the storylines were being built up well for once. There is no excuse for so little wrestling, overall I'd estimate there was only about 12 minutes of actual wrestling on a 2 hour show. As I said before though, the storylines were progressed nicely, and I would expect a John Cena face turn soon. :xyx

I was wondering how I'd missed those matches when I read the report!

Shame about missing the Basham's match, they're a good team. :P

The scene with Heyman and Vince backstage was a good one, with Heyman putting over how Vince only fights women or people with one leg now. Good point well made.

Matt Morgan is a big guy, and I didn't know Jones was that huge until SD. When Lesnar got in the ring he looked awfully small at the side of the other guys.

Where did Morgan come from?

Looks like a pretty impressive team so far. Can't see Cena joining it though.

The sad thing is we know they're all going to have to job to Benoit at SS. :mad

Jones and Morgan should get a team name, and they could be a decent big-man team to dominate the tag ranks before splitting up. Morgan seems to have an "old-school" heel thing going on. Perhaps he just reminds me of someone.

Does the WGTT match mean they're faces now, since FBI are Vince's lackeys? Shouldn't we have been informed of this?

The guy who beat Elix Skipper on Velocity is called Horshu.

While there, when Jones and Morgan came out, my first words were "MY GOD - those guys are BIG!" - and they look even larger on TV

OVW - where most of the talent in WWE comes from (unless they're a known name)

As long as Morgan does most of the work to cover up for Jones' mess ups :P

Or being punished, or running as Tweeners

And that's the match we missed as the queues outside were being let in SLOWLY! (4 doors open to let in the whole audience, and they were stopping and quickly searching everybody)

OK, this Benoit bashing is getting hilarious. Benoit is going to take out Team Lesnar all on his own is he? :lol

Ed you are quickly becoming a parody of yourself around here.

Edited by The Crippler

Actually, I heard that Benoit was going to run-in on the RAW Survivor Match and pin all of their heels as well

Not to mention run-in on all of the Tag matches and win the belts on his own

And as a final act, he's going to be doing commentary at the same time :lol

But don't forget he'll have to take 2 weeks off soon, whilst he's on honeymoon with his new wife, an illegitimate daughter of Vince ;)

See, you're being sarcastic, but it's actually getting that way!

He beat A-Train for the 10th straight time, all but one being clean wins. Then not content with that, he made his OWN PARTNER tap out too! :eek

This week he puts the crossface on the champion Lesnar too! At least we didn't see him tapping, but he probably was.

Oh and inbetween he managed to bury Rhyno so much everyone's forgotten about him!

It wouldn't suprise me in the slightest if Matt Morgan's WWE debut match ends with him tapping to the crossface, and the chances of neither Jones nor Morgan getting out of SS without one of them tapping is pretty low indeed.

Ed

Hehe, Crip, I was going to use that exact parody line myself. Great minds really do think alike:xyx

No, Angle will help a bit. :P

But with the teams as they stand I can easily see Holly & APA going out early, leaving Angle and Benoit to clean house.

Ed

I notice that you mentioned the Crossface on Lesnar, but COMPLETELY IGNORE the fact that he got hit with a Power Bomb...

So, does this mean that he's been buried since you think that the build-up for a Survivor Match is burying people?

Oh, and Angle's been buried too as the Heels stood tall at the end

Hitting one move on someone after attacking them from behind is hardly the same as making someone submit in a clean win, is it? :roll

I don't think the build up for anything is burying people, I think someone losing 7 times to one guy with several different finishing moves including several submissions is burying someone, because A-Train looks incredibly weak.

No-one was made to look weak on SD, although Benoit applying his crossface hardly did Lesnar any favours.

Ed

I don't think we're ever had someone quite like you at TWO before Ed:xyx
