  1. I've been a partial Scrooge for a while. Gifts for my nephew and nieces only, and mailed cards to a handful of relatives and friends. If I get invited to a Christmas party (maybe 1 or 2 at most a year), I bring a decent but non-pricey bottle of wine or liquor. My only decorations are a few jingle bells on my doorknob. I just can't afford to go as all-out as I'd like, not even halfway, and knowing that is honestly a little stressful.
  2. I have a broken oven that I've put off getting repairs for. I use the broiler, stovetop, and microwave way more, but it's been the season to actually roast things.
  3. I don't dance, but I like watching classic and modern styles. It's pretty cool watching practice footage and being reminded of how much time and risk goes into the routines.
  4. Tough question! I'd also give an edge to Elton John. But then, I just prefer mellower pop sounds. The songs by The Who that I love most are the ones like "Behind Blue Eyes" that are at least partly quiet.
  5. Last time I stepped inside a library was a few years ago, to see an exhibition inside. I do think there will always be a place for libraries as long as schools keep using regular books. Also, the rooms are useful for meetings and classes.
  6. Someone recently criticized me about my single-use plastic use. I put empties in the recycling bin or take them home if I can't find one — which I wouldn't have done as a kid. Getting into people's faces to get the environmental message out can get weird. You don't know what someone's already trying to do to leave fewer footprints.
  7. "Gone viral" and "deep dive" used to bother me, but I've gotten used to or numb to them. Is there a saying or phrase that you think is now overused?
  8. I binged S2 of a Japanese series on Netflix, Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. Each episode is like a mini-movie about a customer. A few of the stories are really sad, but each ends on at least a half-hopeful note. Also, don't watch this while hungry!

    Joker

Can't believe this made it to the soundtrack. I liked the movie's setting, approximately late 70s / early 80s New York, when crime was high and employment was low. It matched the dreariness of the story.
  10. Jagger was between so-so and decent in The Man From Elysian Fields. Forgettable movie, though. It's about a man who joins an escort service to pay down the bills.
  11. I'd much rather listen to Slash play than Axl Rose sing. I would put a couple of classic standbys at the top of my list, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.
  12. Jobs having to do with little kids. I don't have the stamina or the on-switch to constantly engage them. I'd also do horribly in fashion, since I don't have an eye for what looks really fitting and stylish on anyone.
  13. That's great, @coleman ! I have unfinished books on Kindle and a long list of want-to-reads. I'm hoping to bring down both of them next year.
  14. Aromatherapy as a career sounds cool. I wouldn't mind trying a class and getting basic info on the hows and whys of healing through scent.
  15. One of the big questions I'm rolling around in my head is who's the bigger parasite, the struggling Kim family who really wants the wealthy lifestyle — or the very rich Park family, who use the poor's labor and doesn't notice what they go through?
  16. It's oh so dark and surprising. Definitely a society tale. I'm still processing what I saw, especially the final act. The cast is awesome and I thought the story moved fast even in its quieter moments. More thoughts to follow!
  17. I think one reason people get into watching and reading about the ultra-rich is that their lifestyles seem to at least partially show that catch-all dream of never toiling or suffering. Of course, we know that living worry-free and lazy for life isn't the same as feeling content. It's fun to daydream about it, though.
  18. I'm watching it later this week. Can't wait! It's one of those releases where audiences and critics are pretty close in (positive) agreement. Metacritic and IMDb posted high numbers, too.
  19. @whaleshark - That's a huge chunk of YouTube! Related to that, I like and get annoyed with food vloggers. It's cool learning what's popular around the world thanks to them. But many will just chew once and make that "foodgasm" face. Really?
  20. I saw part of Dolly Parton's 2014 Glastonbury set on MTV. She's awesome at working a gigantic crowd! She wrote a song just for that show, and it was cool seeing so many singing along.
  21. I've been getting a little more excited about what pops up in my phone's newsfeed, compared to what's coming out in theaters (except for Joker!)

I'm really looking forward to this. The early reviews are running hot and cold, though. Great comments about Joaquin Phoenix's performance, but very negative ones about the movie’s cynical message.
  23. Yeah, it was very cool. Thanks for asking! I'm now trying to be way more careful about carbs while increasing lean protein, especially at night.
  24. One thing I hate about getting older is how easily I put on weight. I was on vacation for just over a week, and I cringed when I saw the number on the scale. I'm doomed to snacking on celery!
  25. I saw the new Azia Ansari show on Netflix. He talked about social subjects, but maybe he felt pressure to do so because of what happened — and he talked about that, too. It seems most topics are still okay to talk about onstage, but not women's bodies (if the comedian's male) or racial joking (if not the comedian's race).
