I've been reading a lot about all the backlash game creators are getting over the new stuff coming out and I feel like a lot of the backlash stems from nostalgia. I believe that nothing beats nostalgia. The same goes for movies - even if the very first movie wasn't too great, when we watched as kids, we loved it. So objectively looking back, the movie may be garbage but we just hang on to that nostalgia. So every sequel or prequal that comes after is just not as good, even though it may be better quality... Do you think this is true for you?

Nostalgia absolutely adds enjoyment to a game. I've enjoyed plenty of sequels/prequels just as much - if not more - than the original. When I was going through a list in my head, I realized that a lot of the prequels/sequels I enjoyed tend to be based on games that aren't plot-based.

If there's a strong storyline then I'm going to be more biased about any prequels/sequels. Usually I'll have strong feelings about the characters and the world they live in. If things deviate from what I had in mind then I'm far less likely to give the game as much credit as it deserves. I realize it's a bit childish but isn't that what nostalgia is all about?

I kind of agree with this. I often catch myself wanting to play old school SEGA games like Sonic or Alex The Kidd, simply because it reminds me of all the hours, days and weeks me and my brother spent trying to beat the game.
I play a lot of old games but I don't know if I can say that's due to nostalgia more than it's due to laziness. I do the same things with shows; I stick with ol' reliables and play/watch them over and over again rather than branching out and watching more new shows. There's also the added bonus that I've already paid for the older games. :D I do think nostalgia factors into my preference though, it's just far from the only thing.
I don't think nostalgia will make me play an old game. I would rather talk about it with my friend that I played the game with rather than playing that game again.
I like the way you think Meerkat. It's true, talking about old games does the same, brings up those memories. For myself, when I play old games, I'll enjoy it more than playing newer games, but for a shorter amount of time.

If ever I will need to play an old game, then I will choose the arcade games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat (they never tried fixing the spelling of this game). My friends and I will spend the afternoons playing these games and memorizing the moves.
Nostalgia only goes so far with me. I'll happily settle into a game that might not have the best graphics or be compatible with the latest gear, but I'm not putting up with glitches that make gameplay unbearable.
