Ah yes, the next game in the successful icon fighting series.

I myself didnt play the original that much but I did play a lot of Melee.

Here are two trailers for the new game:

Trailer 2

Confirmed List of Characters:

Mario

Link

Kirby

Samus - will become Zero Suit Samus under certain conditions

Pikachu

Wario

Pit

Fox

Snake

Characters under speculation:

Sonic

Megaman

Bomberman

King DeDeDe

Diddy Kong

So far I am happy with the selection of characters. There are a few that I would like to see make it in. The final number of characters is speculated to be around 40-45.

SSB is a real love-it-or-hate-it Marmite sandwich of a game series. Either the entire thing will zip right over your head and seem random, chaotic and pointless whilst simultaneously rendering you blind, or else it will become a life-consuming religion. Being in the second camp, this still stands as my number one long-term reason for buying a Wii. I know I will get literally hundreds of hours out of it; it's a game which has so much to do, and so many levels of hidden depth.

Still, I hope they do go for broke with improvements this time like they did last time. The quality of the package provided by Melee was breathtaking, especially compared to the original. I'll buy it regardless, but I'll be disappointed if this one was just the same as the last but with the new levels and characters. Sakurai was talking about having a robust single player this time, which is gravy, given I thought it was decent last time. If the same level of improvement is reflected from the transition from the original to Melee, then we are getting a great title on our hands in the future.

Shame the Sonic rumour that has been echoed ever since the series hit the Cube has yet to bare fruit. Snake and Wario are great newcomers, Wario for fun stakes alone, but the bold statement of Sonic in a Ninty developed game will be something for the history books.

Wi-fi online play has been confirmed for Brawl:

The Smash Bros. Dojo today confirmed that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will have an online mode.

There are two main types - "With Friends" and "With Anyone". There will be no region locking for the online mode like Mario Strikers Charged Football, and Sakurai warns us that we may encounter some lag. He apologises in advance for that.

In the friend match mode, you can see the status of any registered friends, their name, logo (which can include Miis), and a custom message. Before a match, you can enter 4 short messages which can be used mid-game via the D-pad. You can select your own settings in this mode.

In the "With Anyone" section, you can't see your opponents' names or send short messages. Brawl does not keep track of any battle records in this mode.

And a nice little extra - when you are waiting for you opponents to make their selections you get to kick around a punchbag. Furthermore, there will be more uses of the online system. Stay tuned for later updates regarding that.

You know that long rumbling Sonic rumour....

Nintendo has revealed that our old friend Sonic the Hedgehog is to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the first Wii instalment in the olden days fighting series.

That's according to Japanese blog Ge-maga (via IGN), reporting on a Nintendo press conference held this week.

It was also confirmed that Sonic will be able to turn himself into Super Sonic in Smash Bros. He won't be the only videogame hero to cameo in the game, of course - Solid Snake is set to join in the fun, with actor David Hayter to reprise his role.

Also at the conference, Nintendo confirmed that previously announced plans for online play are shaping up nicely. Seems there will be a co-op mode, although it's not yet clear how this will work.

There was some bad news - Smash Bros. has been delayed and won't now arrive in Japan until 24th January. It wasn't due out in Europe until next year anyway, but here's hoping this doesn't mean we'll have to wait even longer.

Imagine if they let Sonic have a 2D stage akin to Mario's. Green Hill Zone, Casino Zone, Chemical Plant Zone. Would be very nice.

Be interesting to see Bomberman and Pac-Man included. Plus maybe some of the Capcom and Square Enix back catalogue.

Another Metal Gear Character in Smash

Solid Snake wasn't enough for Super Smash Bros. Brawl's star-studied roster; a second Metal Gear Solid character, the uni-eyed Grey Fox has joined the fight! But unfortunately you won't be able to play as him...

Grey Fox makes his Smash Bros. Appearance as an assist trophy, which help (or hurt) the player that activates them but aren't playable characters. In this case Grey Fox turns up and does his ninja thing on whoever happens to be in his way (he did chin a Metal Gear Rex after all) and look pretty damn hard in the process.

For the fighting MS fans will have to stick with Snake then, but at least it raises the chances that there are more non-Nintendo characters left to see...

Be nice if there were more playable MG characters added to the fold like Liquid, as they can just reskin Solid, but I would love to see Ocelot or even better Otacon.

Well, they're hardly the kind of games you'll devote months, even years to mastering (like say, Street Fighter or Tekken) but whack four pads in (well, wave four nunchuks around) and you'll never have more fun playing a videogame. The addition of Snake is a stroke of genius, and if they can squeeze Sonic, Mega Man or Bomberman in, it would be hilarious (I wouldn't completely discount Sonic after the Wii Olympics thing). I'm liking the more open policy games companies seem to be taking with including their characters in other developers' games, the thought of Mario and Sonic (or even Mario and Bomberman) teaming up for a game in the SNES / Mega Drive days was unthinkable.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is set to include a new Spectator mode that allows you to watch random matches over the Internet and gamble on the results.

Unveiled on the official Smash Bros. DOJO!! website, Spectator mode does much as it says - although, this being Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, no player data is actually shared, so you can't groom anyone. Aw.

Surely the best bit though is that when you get into your random match, you can bet coins on the character you think will win before it kicks off. Which is just wicked.

Spectator mode joins an ever-growing list of cool little bonuses announced for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which already has a star-GET-studded character line-up and a PictoChat-themed level.

If it's anywhere near as good as the GameCube one, we're all in for a treat when it's released early next year.

From Eurogamer like the Orange Box news.

New Brawl Newcomer!

A little guy gets sized up for a big fight. The Smash Bros. Dojo gives us a new fighter...

A character of six parts. Say hello to Captain Olimar and his Pikmin squad:

All his Smash Attacks require his Pikmin, which can be plucked from the ground, which are short-lived and may satter. It's a new way of fighting - you have to look after your Pikmin and fight.

Olimar brings all five types of Pikmin (Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple and the sadistic White one) with him. The Smash Bros. Dojo hasn't given us any information on what his moves are.

Screenshots.

This is apparently a screen of the whole roster, including the 12 hidden characters.
