Guitar buying advice!

Right, in the new year I'm planning to get a guitar for a certain someones 21st.

I haven't got a massive budget, mainly because I'm a poor student, but could stretch to like £250-£300 at a push. The guitar doesnt have to be amazing because I'll probably pay for a set of new pickups over time, get them changed to some nice EMG's or something.

I either want a Flying V, and I've been looking at the one on http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?ID=4142&ParentID=4142 and this one I quite like *** it's a slight twist on the original v http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Jackson---JS30-RR---Rhoads~ID~4145.asp or perhaps an explorer, despite the fact he's already got an epiphone explorer. Basic black would do, but something a little bit different would be cool.

So you musical fiends, any suggestions (preferable with pictures + cost :))

A good friend of mine has played on a Dean "Gears of War" guitar and said it was the most horrorable guitar he has played.

There's a store that used to be called Academy of Sound - can't remember the new name, maybe some TWOites can help with that one - where you can get a starter kit which includes a guitar and amp for about £250.

EDIT - sorry just realised he knows how to play guitar and owns one.

Them be some fine lookin' geetars, Nic. I like the second one best.

Just tonight I've been thinking of getting a better electric guitar, and/or a decent acoustic one. Although I think I should learn on the one I have first, and only invest in finer equipment once I improve to a more reasonable standard. I'm getting better though, I know three chords now! Joke...............I know five.

I have indeed and it rocks, although mine's not black. It started off white, but it's painted all camouflaged up, a bit like max cavalera's

That sounds awesome! You absoloutely must take a picture and post it up, because one of those beasts decked out in camouflage is something I want to see. If you don't mind, of course.

I will do, but for now, it's a little bit like this but more green and less grey...

I loved every second of it and it's really easy to play, however i know it's out of Nic's price range at £299.

But my new guitar is going to be a Dean now

They're both very cool guitars! Far more exciting than my standard layout black starter guitar.

This is my bad boy and a snip at around £500! well, less as I got it second hand but anyway. for the unculutred it an epihone Les Paul Standard in translucent blue and it kicks ass. I personaly think it rocks more than the above guitars but thats personal choice.

On a seperate note what kind of wodd do you prefer in the fingerboard? Rosewood or straight ash?

I never understood why people jerk off over guitars with angles in them, half of them you can't play sitting down, you crack the horns off of any corner you pass, getting cases for them is a pain and unless your playing in front of a big audience I think they look stupid. Like a playstation guitar. All style and little substance.

Nothing on earth sounds a rich, smooth or has the rock feel of a les paul. They are the awesome. I missed your point about them not looking hardcore, whats that got to do with how good a guitar is? Preferance maybe but the reason so many guitarists choose them is because they are better than your geometric cluster-f*ck monstrosities you can buy for £2.99 from some random manufacturer in North Korea.

Honestly, I just don't see why having a "cool" shape has any bearing on what kind of guitar you'd buy. Just because it's the same shape as one played by Dimebag don't mean your going to sound like him. Surely sound quality and playability are more important?

So you DON'T like them, then? :greets4:

I personally think guitars with angles look cool, and Les Pauls look classy.

This thread makes me sad that a herion addict who was my friend stole my genuine '89 Gibson Explorer natural wood sunburst and sold it for drug money... **** you Kyle Hoffman, **** you in the asshole. Oh, and **** you for telling your manager at the Starbuck's you just got a job at the may dad was harassing you, when all he was doing was making sure you knew you still owed me the money that I'll never see... asshole.

They have a place but I honestly can't believe that people can dismiss the Les Paul over an Explorer or BC Rich or Flying V which to me are just funny shaped novelties in comparison. I understand that not every guitar suits everyone and the even the Les Paul won't work in every situation. I'd never say a Fender Jag or Jazzmaster was better than a Strat just because it looks nicer or was Cobain signature guitar.

Saying all that I'd give anything for a PRS..... and my Dad has 2!!
