Damn! I've been following this most of the day and it's an almighty **** up on Sony's part and it's easy for me as an XBOX owner to point and laugh but yeah Microsoft have messed up with their console as well but in my opinion, this is just a disaster for Sony.

I mean if they do get a patch out that correct this which I'm sure they will do in the next 24 / 48 hours that doesn't help the thousands possibily millions of PS3 users who aren't connected to the internet. How are these guys going to get their consoles fixed? Sony might end up having to either recall or press Blu-Rays with the patch on to fix the mess. I reckon someone at Sony HQ is going to have their balls on the line after this one.

Slightly Off Topic but I do actually have a PS3 now which is a slim version, not been on it that much in the past few weeks but when I get back on it I'll add some of you chaps to my friends list.

If I were to buy a slim PS3 say in the next week would it be affected or is it just the big fat PS3's that are having trouble?

Now I have visions of my 60GB (upgraded to 250GB) as the leader of some kind of religious-like rebellion, pressuring all the younger non-slim consoles into plotting jihad-style warfare across Sony's own network :P

Power to the EMOTION engine (ok, fine, even if it's software emulated...)! Death to the Slimfidel!

HA glad i'm not the only loon on here :lol

Think they've said in this thread a few times now that it's NOT the slimline ones...

This released by Sony

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

•The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

•When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following

message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been

signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.

•When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears

on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install

trophies. Please exit your game.”

•When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the

Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date

and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”

•Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the

PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com

You can find that quote all over the net right now.

As I understand it, the problem only affects games which connect to PSN for trophies etc (though I might be wrong). If it's never been online, you shouldn't notice the issue. I'm guessing that it's got something to do with the local date being wrong on the PS3 and using some form of timestamp security for communicating with the PSN servers, much like kerberos encryption on windows fails if a domain PC drifts too far out of sync from the domain controller server.

Nope, even PS3s not connected to the net screwed up. But it didnt need a patch, just righted itself once the 24 hours was passed.

If it happens again is another thing and they may try to patch it to prevent it happening in another 4 years time.
