UFC 183: Silva vs. Diaz

You know how people talk about WWE's 8.4 rating being an unbeatable high point? In the city of Brasilia, UFC 183 did a 20.0. That's not a typo, it's not a 2.0, it's a twenty point oh.
How does that compare with WWE's highest-ever audience; 15.2 / 33 million viewers for The Main Event (Hogan / Andre WMIII rematch)?

I mean, I get that the rating is higher, but the convoluted way actual viewing figures are counted, did the UFC show top 33 million viewers?

EDIT - Never mind; should've refreshed before posting instead of just jumping back into the thread after being at work all day. :lol

Unless the population of Brasilia increased fifteen-fold and every single one of them watched UFC 183, it didn't beat 33 million. Brasilia's population is 2.8 million, so a 20.0 rating would, very, very, very roughly, be about 600,000 people.

The over-all viewing figures for Brazil itself could very well be over 33 million though.

UFC have beaten 33 million in Brazil before though, and by quite some distance. Velasquez vs. Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1, back in 2011, was, apparently, watched by 60 million people in Brazil.

There ya go,

Just like that, Anderson Silva's 18th career Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) victory will be overturned to a "No Contest" by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) following "The Spider's" positive test for performance enhancing drugs (PED) in a January 9th drug screening.

NSAC executive director Bob Bennett broke the news to Brazilian outlet Fohla:

"It will be ruled a NC (no contest). I don't know if he will receive the win bonus after this change. That's UFC's call, but a percentage of his purse will be held because of this episode."

They can cut him without needing a reason, that said they wouldn't cut him anyway, infact they'll beg him to come back and give him huge money and a top opponent because people want to see him.

Sucks for Anderson, I was wondering whether they would leave it as a win seeing as both guys failed drug tests, obviously not. That means he'll surely be back to try and end on a win now I'd imagine, for better or worse.

Annoyingly this means Diaz is not on a three fight losing streak, plus it means they can't cut him.

They can cut anyone they want, whenever they want. The three-strikes rule is just UFC's own system for deciding who is and isn't good enough. Plenty of guys are cut after one loss, or a no contest, or even, occasionally, a win, and there's plenty of guys who have had three fight losing streaks and survived because of either their popularity or their style.

Yeah, I think Dana openly said that, if he keeps fighting like Dan Hardy, he'll keep fighting in the UFC, even if he loses, where as Jon Fitch (who also failed a 'roid test this week for the record) was cut after one loss, with a 14-3-1 UFC record for being painfully f*cking dull.

Apparently they might not overturn it and it might remain a win seeing as Diaz also flunked a PED test. I guess they consider it a level playing field in that regard?

Oooooh it's getting nasty. The NSAC has requested that the UFC remove Silva from his position as coach on the on-going season of Ultimate Fighter Brazil (or Latin America, idk), which is currently being in Las Vegas. The 'roids ban includes any official coaching positions, and the NSAC say that includes Ultimate Fighter coaches.

Silva out, Nogueira in:

RODRIGO “BIG NOG” NOGUEIRA NAMED NEW COACH OF THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER® BRAZIL 4

Nevada State Athletic Commission requests Anderson Silva step down as coach of the series

Las Vegas – The UFC® announced today that Brazilian legend Rodrigo "Big Nog" Nogueira will join the cast of The Ultimate Fighter® Brazil 4, the organization’s signature television reality series, as coach following the departure of UFC middleweight Anderson Silva.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which regulates The Ultimate Fighter series’ exhibition fights filmed in Las Vegas, requested that Silva cease participation in the series as a result of his temporary suspension following the recently announced preliminary results of his January 9 pre-fight drug test for UFC® 183.

The UFC and Globo, the show’s Brazilian broadcaster, respect the Commission's decision, which will allow Silva to focus his attention on the matter before the Commission. Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC will continue to support him as this process unfolds.

The series, which began filming in Las Vegas on Monday, Feb. 2, originally featured Silva and former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as head coaches. Rua will continue on as coach of Team Shogun versus the newly formed Team Nogueira, which will also include Big Nog’s twin brother Rogerio "Lil Nog" Nogueira as an assistant coach.

Whats this about UFC with-holding Andersons entire $6 MILLION purse? They are denying it but smoke/fire etc...

Also, Anderson passed the latter test taken 10 days after the one he failed:

That story's either completely made up, or it's an exaggeration. The UFC simply don't have the ability to do that. It's not that they wouldn't, it's that they can't. Firstly, sponsor money, which is paid by the sponsors, not the UFC, secondly, fight money, which is paid by the NSAC, not the UFC, thirdly, pay-per-view money, which is contractually protected, and Silva could sue UFC's collective dicks off if they didn't pay, and, fourthly, there's back room bonuses, which the UFC could choose not to pay. So, at the absolute most , the story is that the UFC refused to give Silva a bonus because he failed a drug test, but, even then, the story makes no sense, because, not only is that not his "entire" purse, it's also something that's in no way guaranteed, and it's kinda dumb to complain that you weren't given money that no one was obliged to give you in the first place.

The report itself says it's Silva guaranteed money that's being withheld (his fight money and his win bonus), which is just an absolute, provable, bare-faced lie. Before all UFC events, the UFC gives the fighter's purse money to the local commission who are sanctioning the fight. After the fight, the commission pays the fighters, not the UFC. For it to be physically possible for the UFC to steal Silva's money they would have to have decided they weren't going to pay him long before the fight even happened, let alone the test results, and then get the NSAC to agree with them, and then get the NSAC to lie about the amounts it had paid out (the NSAC say they paid Silva) and then keep this multi-organisational, multi-week plan to screw Anderson Silva a secret, all except one plucky Brazilian journalist, who bought the case crashing down. It's one of those situations where, if the journalist is lying about most of it, he's probably lying about all of it. If he's lying about the "entire" purse, if he's lying about the guaranteed payments, if he's lying about how sports payments work in Nevada, if he's lying about the amounts of money involved, I think it's safe to assume he's lying about the entire thing.

Aside from it being impossible, there's also silly stuff like the amount magically changing as the story's spread anywhere between $2million and $7million depending on who's telling it. And, don't forget, the story's from the Brazilian MMA community, the most honest, upstanding sporting institution on Earth. So I'm saying plenty of smoke, absolutely no fire.

Sources: Anderson Silva failed additional drug test in relation to UFC 183

The twisting and turning of the Anderson Silva failed drug test saga continues.

Multiple sources close to the situation on Wednesday confirmed to MMAjunkie that Silva failed a second drug test in relation to UFC 183. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Last week, it was announced Silva (34-6 MMA, 17-2 UFC) tested positive for drostanolone metabolites and androstane ahead of his win over Nick Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) in the UFC 183 main event. (Diaz, himself, tested positive for marijuana metabolites in a fight-night drug test.)

That test was administered on Jan. 9 and was considered an out-of-competition screening. The former middleweight champion, however, passed a Jan. 19 test for human growth-hormone, as well as performance-enhancing drugs.

The date of Silva’s second failed test is not yet known, and an open-records request made by MMAjunkie has not yet been answered by the state of Nevada.

Silva’s case will go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission during a Feb. 17 meeting. He will likely be temporarily suspended pending a formal hearing into the matter, which would take place at a subsequent meeting.

The fighter, who returned from a 13-month layoff (due to a broken leg) at UFC 183, faces a suspension, fines and the overturning of his decision win over Diaz at the Jan. 31 event. Diaz is scheduled for the same meeting of the NSAC, as are UFC fighters Hector Lombard and Ashlee Evans-Smith, who also recently failed drug tests for fights in Nevada.

Stay tuned to MMAjunkie for more on this story as it becomes available.

Anderson Silva also failed UFC 183 pre- and post-fight drug tests

Add anti-anxiety medication to the list of things Anderson Silva tested positive for in conjunction with his UFC 183 bout with Nick Diaz.

Silva (34-6 MMA, 17-2 UFC), who defeated Diaz via decision in the Jan. 31 pay-per-view headliner, initially failed an “out-of-competition” drug test on Jan. 9, when he tested positive for drostanolone metabolites and androstane. Silva passed a test on Jan. 19, but again failed both his pre- and post-fight tests on the night of the bout, which took place in Las Vegas.

This confirms an earlier MMAjunkie report of a second test failure by Silva.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission released the information ahead of a commission meeting today in Las Vegas, where Silva is expected to receive a temporary suspension pending a formal hearing.

The pre-fight test showed drostanolone metabolites once again, evidence of performance-enhancing drugs. Meanwhile, the post-fight test was positive for oxazepam and temazepam. Those medications are used to treat anxiety and insomnia, respectively.

MMAjunkie will have much more on the meeting and the fallout of this new information as it becomes available.

Yep, agreed. Sleep aids too. Obviously this guy rushed back (or was rushed back by his handlers), used the roids as much for recovery as anything maybe and was at the same time a guy who was having anxiety and couldn't sleep. Shame to think of the GOAT in that state. Edited by The Beltster
