Funnily enough Metallica doing 'Whiskey in the Jar' is probably my least favourite of any version I've heard for some reason. It certainly isn't as good as Lizzy's and I have a lot of childhood memories of hearing The Dubliners doing it so I'm probably biased in that regard.

that's the whole band doing that song isn't it? Its the b-side to the Trooper if memory serves me. (which it may not seen as I haven't owned a maiden vinyl in a long time, and wasnt even alive when it was first released)

Just checked Wikipedia and it was indeed the b-side to the 83 issue of the Trooper single.

 

Bit of an obsessive Maiden fan you see, can't help it.

I love both versions, its just as a Deftones fan it is probably my bias coming through a bit.

 

Either way if the source material wasn't as good as it is then they couldn't have pulled it off in the first place.

30 Seconds To Mars do a cracking cover of "Stronger" by Kanye West on one of the Radio 1 Live Lounge albums.

 

And after listening too Orgy - Blue Monday, I can agree its a great verision but nothing can top the original.

I'm the only one on the planet who thinks that Orgy's Blue Monday is the best version, but I can live with that. I'm just in the vast minority of people who are right ;)

 

 

And back to the "not better, but interesting" list:

, always worth watching because Jon D is great, and Fieldy rapes his bass dry.

 

Then, Limp Bizkit put a pretty cool twist on "Sanitarium". Better than it has any right to be. Durst is a bellend, but he rocks hard on this one.

 

All the talk of Billy Idol and we glossed over

, and "Rebel Yell" by Dope, my personal favourite cover of any Idol song. Although, Drowning Pool also do a pretty interesting cover. Not the best, but well weird hearing one of my all-time favourite vocalists tackling it.

 

 

And since I mentioned it early: Billy Idol does Van Halen.

I think most would agree Cash's version of 'Hurt' is better than the original. Maybe. Possibly. Probably.

 

I dunno, it just seems more powerful and perfectly suited to Cash at that stage of his life, being close to death and with his own personal history and whatnot. Video is tremendous too so that probably sways people in its favour.
